Maintaining your own identity once you become a mother is a tall task 🤱🏼 Your world seems to become entirely about your baby, and of course, that’s quite natural, and not a bad thing, not really. But having some segments of your life that are for nourishing who you are as a person, aside from being a mother, can be so important for your mental health ☀️ . For me, being a mother is the BEST part of my identity, I love it more than anything else in the world (my husband is right up there too 🤪 ). But there are other things that also feed my soul and make my heart sing: Reading, travel, dancing, writing my blog, yoga, and (thanks to my once-held and long-fought-for dream of being an actress that didn’t *quite* work out how I planned ) theatre and film ❤️ . Although it’s so hard (read: near-impossible ) to find the time to indulge in any of these things that help me feel like “me”, I know how important it is for me personally to try to maintain a sense of identity. So I’ve been making a concerted effort to partake in these activities that help fuel my identity when and where I can - whether that’s an hour a day or five minutes a day (or five minutes a week! 🙈 . Full blog post on this topic up now on my website 💻 . Women are often considered guilty of “losing their identity” once they become a mother 🤱🏼 It’s true, for many women it seems like once they have a baby that their whole life becomes about their child. That's because it kinda does 🤷‍♀️ But hear me out - let's have a chat about Motherhood and Identity 🤰💜 New post on the blog now (link in bio ) ✨ . . . . . #motherhood #mumlife #motherhooddiaries #identity #metime #mentalhealth #postnatalmentalhealth #postnataldepression #postnatalanxiety #pnd #pna #ppa #ppd #postpartumdepression #postpartumanxiety

Now that we’re allowed to drive somewhere for exercise, yesterday I was lucky enough to take a walk at Bristol’s beautiful Blaise Castle estate, a new discovery for me. And wow, it took my breathe away! Such a gorgeous place that I can’t believe I didn’t know about sooner 😍 Definitely now one of my new favourite places 💚🌳🍃 #bristol #localtreasures #walkingtrail #dailyexercise #forest #nature #lockdown #blaisecastle

Personally, I’ve always been a huge social media user 📱 I was a young high school student during the golden age of Myspace and the invention of Facebook. I was part of that first generation of “If my social activities aren’t documented on social media, then did they really happen?” 🤔 I studied media at university, social media became my job, and then moving abroad it became my connection to my friends and family back home 💻 However recently I've taken a step back from social media. The next book in my ‘What I’ve Been Reading’ series from my latest blog post is a significant one - possibly the most important book I’ve read about #Motherhood : The Gentle Parenting Book by Sarah Ockwell-Smith @sarahockwellsmith 📖✨ . I’d heard of the concept of Gentle Parenting before having my daughter, through other parents, and from what I’d heard of it, it deeply resonated with my ideas on mothering and parenthood too 🤱🏼 . After months of being part of GP discussion groups on Facebook and feeling right ‘at home’, to finally have the time to pick up the book and give it a good read through made my heart and mind feel so ‘right’ ❤️ . The Gentle Parenting Book teaches how to parent with empathy, respect and understanding, using current science and child psychology alongside the needs of both parent and child 👩‍👧 . So much of what Ockwell-Smith discusses in the book made complete sense to me, and further cemented in my mind that Gentle Parenting was definitely the way forward – for me at least – as a parent ☀️ . I really appreciate that this book exists, as it helps affirm to me that my natural parenting instincts are correct, and that much of the other “good advice” that is pushed at in other, mainstream parenting books (things that just don’t seem to sit right with me ) is certainly not as good as many seem to think 🙅‍♀️ . Reading this book has helped calm a lot of my anxiety about parenting and the way in which I choose to raise my daughter, helping me feel like I am doing the right thing and being a “good mum” after all ⭐️ . I’d highly recommend it to any parent or soon to be parent. GOOD READS: My latest blog post is from a new series I’ve created to encourage myself to make time to read, an lifelong loved activity that’s so good for my mental health (which needs a bit of lovin’ right now ). In this new series I share what I’ve been reading each month 📚❤️ . The first book in my April bundle was Little Disasters by Sarah Vaughan 📖 . From the bestselling author of Anatomy of a Scandal, this novel explores the complexity of motherhood 🤱🏼 . When a paediatric doctor is called to the Emergency Department to check on a baby with a suspicious head injury, she is surprised to find it’s the baby of a good friend – someone she would only ever describe as the perfect mother. . One moment changes everything in this thrilling and emotive book. . It’s safe to say, it had me hooked! . So hooked, in fact, that I devoured it in the space of two days. . Maybe it was the fact that I could empathise greatly with one of the leading characters, a mother of a young baby struggling with postnatal mental health issues 💙 . This story just had me glued to it, I just HAD to know the truth about what had happened as the timeline flitted backwards and forwards and across different character perspectives to put the pieces together. . A fabulous, gripping read, especially one for mothers who will probably be able to relate to one or all of the mothers who are portrayed in this story ✨ . Heartwarming things we’ve seen on our daily walks during lockdown: A litter of ducklings with their family 🐣 and a happy little rabbit going about his/her business 🐇 . I don’t know about you (if you’re also in strict lockdown like we are here in the UK ), but our daily exercise time has been the shining light of these seven weeks so far ☀️ . Living in an apartment with no outside space or balcony or whatever, it can get very “stuffy” mentally while we can’t leave the house 🏠 . This week, while it was wet weather for the majority of the time, we didn’t even go for our daily walks, and I certainly noticed the difference that this small time of being outside in the fresh air has on my mental health. Now that the sunshine is back, I’m so happy to be able to go for our sacred walks again 🌲 . I know it’s only a small thing, and there are so many people out there in much worse situations, so it feels so selfish to complain at all, but I’m just trying to be honest and real about all this 💚 . . . . . #lockdown #quarantine #covid #coronavirus #mentalhealth #walk #nature #outside #rabbit #duck #ducklings

I guess it’s about time I let you in on this piece of news 🤵🏼👰🏼 I’d told you all recently how our wedding, which was set to take place in Australia next month, had to be cancelled due to Coronavirus. Instead of rescheduling our ceremony (and in an attempt to make something positive out of a sad situation ) we instead decided to reveal that Dan and I actually got legally married in a secret registry ceremony almost a year ago 🙊 We’d gotten hitched privately for a few reasons, the biggest being to make my visa journey a little easier (basically, if I applied for the exact same visa I was already going to apply for as a fiancé rather than as a spouse, I wouldn’t have been allowed to work, and with a baby on the way at the time that just wasn’t an option🤰 ). Our wedding was already planned, so to us it was just as if we were getting the paperwork side of things out of the way on the sly prior to the ‘fun part’. We never expected it to be our “real” wedding day, but with Coronavirus putting our proper wedding plans out of the question, we figured instead of spending another year or more trying to reorganise an international wedding and ramping our stress levels up way more than needed, we’d just come clean and embrace the cute little registry wedding we’d already had ❤️ We let our family and friends in on the secret recently, and now we’re looking forward to holding a small party in each Australia and the UK to celebrate our marriage with our loved ones (once it is safe and possible to do so ) 🍾🎉 Meanwhile, I’m just pleased I can finally wear my ring and not have to bite my tongue anymore when almost (correctly but accidentally ) referring to Dan as my husband in public 😂❤️ #secretwedding #coronavirus #covidwedding #marriage #wedding #registrywedding

My latest blog post, if you haven’t seen it, discusses the benefits of using cloth nappies 🙌🏼🌍🌱 . Inarguably the biggest, and possibly the most important benefit (in my eyes anyway ) is the environmental benefit of choosing cloth nappies over disposables. It is estimated that an average baby will go through 5,000-7,000 nappies by the time they are potty trained. That’s a lot of landfill! 🗑🤢 . It’s estimated to take hundreds of years (possibly more than 500 years ) before disposable nappies in landfill even begin to break down – and when they do, because they are soiled, as they rot they release methane into the air. Methane is about twice as bad as Co2 as a greenhouse gas emitter, and it is estimated that one child’s amount of disposable nappies could account for as much as 630kg of methane 😥 . But what about the water and energy used to wash cloth nappies, I hear you ask? Well, I go into that further in the blog post using my own study, however something to keep in mind is that there is a LOT of water and energy used to create, package, ship and distribute disposable nappies (Which of course there is for cloth nappies too, however they are a limited number, which are reused over and over again, rather than used for hours or minutes and then thrown away forever ) ♻️🌍💚 . NEW POST up now all about cloth nappies ✨ One of my favourite topics these days, who knew I could become so passionate about something that holds wee and poop? 🙈 . In my latest blog post I share how my we spent just £150 on our entire nappy supply to last Ada until she potty trains, I explore the biggest benefits of choosing cloth over disposables (if that’s something you’re thinking about doing ), and I delve into the arguments surrounding the energy and water usage for cloth (spoiler alert: cloth are still better than disposables ) 💚🌍♻️ . Happy #EarthDay2020 everyone! 🌍 . I’m throwing it back with this blurry photo I took out the window of a minibus in Costa Rica 🇨🇷 back in 2014. As someone who was already fairly passionate about the environment back then, I remember being SO excited to see all the wind turbines dotted around the land ☀️ . I’d never seen one in person before, and all I remember thinking is “I want to see more of this - so much more!” 💚 . Well, 6 years later and I’m still thinking the same thing. There is more renewable energy out in our world these days, yes, but I still want to see even more, because I know we are capable of it ✨ . In the meantime, while we continue to push our governments to invest more in renewable and sustainable energy sources whilst separating from the unsustainable energy sources of the past, here are some things you can do on a personal scale to help our wonderful earth: . ♻️ Ditch single use plastics and switch to zero or low waste alternatives (reusable coffee mugs, stainless steel straws, safety razors, shampoo and soap bars, reusable shopping bags, period products etc etc ) . 🌱 Eat less meat and animal products to lower your carbon emissions (and do a solid for the animals and your health whilst you’re at it ) . 👶🏼 Think about other eco friendly swaps you can make in your home and among your family life (eg cloth nappies and wipes, installing solar hot water, turning lights and appliances off when not being used, getting a smart meter ) . ✈️ Try to travel sustainably where possible (eg trains over planes when you can, be a responsible traveler when on the road - take only photos, leave nothing but footprints kind of vibe ) . 💵 Invest your money where it aligns with your values - invest in banks, energy companies, and business that are sustainable and supporting a message you can get behind. . All the love this Earth Day and everyday 💚 . . . #earthday #earth #greenliving #ecofriendly #ecofriendlyliving #ecofriendlyfamily #environment #environmentallyfriendly #zerowaste #lowwaste #lowimpact

New blog post up now talking ‘6 Reasons Why Mum and Baby Groups are Awesome’ 👶🏼 . I’ll admit, before I had a baby myself I wasn’t quite sold on the idea of Mum and Baby groups. . A whole heap of crying babies in one room plus a bunch of strangers with whom the only thing I share in common is that I too recently pushed a little human out of my vagina*? No thanks, don’t think it’s for me 😬 . I was wrong. So wrong. Mum and Baby groups saved my sanity ❤️ . *Or grew and birthed a baby in any style/came to be a caregiver in any way possible. Feeling this so much ❤️💔 . It’s such a time of mixed emotions right now isn’t it? On the one hand I’m devastated about all the shake ups COVID-19 has had on my little family’s life: The cancellation of our wedding and entire trip to Australia; not knowing when I will finally get to introduce my baby girl to her Australian family; our house purchase on hold; and the inability for us to attend a family members funeral recently. . On the other hand I’m so grateful: I have my physical health, and this isolation has given me the chance to foster growth when it comes to my mental health; I have my beautiful baby girl who is a shining light; we have technology that allows us to keep in touch with our family and friends; we luckily aren’t in a scary financial situation because of all this; and I have an amazing partner with whom I share a healthy and happy relationship with, so I honestly don’t mind being stuck in a tiny flat with him 24/7 🙊❤️ . #repost from @_happyasamother via @thebabychick #isolation #coronavirus #quarantine #mentalhealth
