To my beginner Java codies 😊 Using temporary variables to swap numbers. What do you get from this function? **Your swap function is essentially changing the values in two pieces of memory. Anything referencing those bits of memory will now get different values. In Java there aren't really pointers, so this won't work. Instead, references are held on objects, and you can only change stuff inside the objects. #java #javaprogramming #programming #coding #computation #math #function #clt #charlotte #girlswhocode #womeninstem #science #compsci #girlswhostudy #practice #persaverance

A great reminder for all of us paving the way for future generations 💪 I was the first of my dad’s side of the family to graduate from a 4-year university & I will be the first in my entire family to pursue a degree in dentistry. Although this journey has been self-taught & self-guided, the people I’ve surrounded myself with have supported me every step of the way. I hope to provide my friends & family members with that same support if and when they choose to pursue higher education, move away for college, &/or study dentistry 😊 #dentalstudent #udlsb #futuredoctora #futuredentista #doctorasegura #futureodonto ́loga #educatedchicana #educatedlatina #lasallian #lasallista #lasalle #alumnadeodontologia #odontologia #dentist #medicalstudent #medicine #womeninSTEM #latinasinSTEM #chicanasinSTEM

Have you experienced burnout?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s not surprising entrepreneurial women burn out 50% more often than men. Had a mini photo shoot after my weight session today, because I was feeling good! A tip that I use to construct my workouts so I don’t get bored (for context I really enjoy working my legs so I focus there ): 3-4 exercises for my legs, 2-3 for the other groups (for me it’s legs, chest and back, and arms/shoulders ). I do 5-8 reps for each exercises and repeat each 3-4 times. It’s takes me about an hour, but I change up the exercises just to keep it fun! If you can only do one muscle group a day, that’s awesome too! Any movement is good movement! 🦇. #fitness #fitnessjourney #goth #gothgirl #alt #alternative #makeup #workout #weights #girlswholift #womeninstem #bodypositivity

Please take action today on behalf of California wildlife. ⁣ ⁣ Assembly Bill (AB ) 1788, the California Ecosystems Protection Act, places a statewide moratorium on second generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs ) until the Department of Pesticide Regulation finishes its evaluation of their use and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife determines that they will not result in significant adverse effects to non-target wildlife. ⁣ ⁣ Read the Cougar Conservancy's ( @cougarconservancy ) letter to the California Senate Appropriations Committee (bit.ly/supportAB1788 ), and please take a few minutes today to voice your support for this bill.⁣ ⁣ Read the full action alert at bit.ly/AB1788-action (link in bio ).⁣ ⁣ #breakthepoisonchain #AB1788 ⁣ ⁣ [Photo: National Park Service. I saw these all over Instagram of #womeninstem supporting others and magnifying their accomplishments so I thought I would join in. I learned more than I could have hoped for in the 8 weeks of my summer internship and was approved to keep working remotely part-time through the school year (special thank you to David for encouraging me to ask ). At the beginning of this internship my manager asked what I hoped to gain from the experience and my answer was confidence in my abilities as an engineer. I can easily say I gained that and much more.

I'll be honest.. I didn't quite understand what everyone meant when they said "you're starting residency during a pandemic, be prepared".⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Everyday, I walk into every patient's room with an N95, a surgical mask, and a face shield. I can't wait to take them off because I have a hard time taking deep breaths in them. But I can't.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Every time I leave a patient's room, I have so much anxiety about any possible way I could've contaminated myself. Did I sanitize enough times? Were my gloves on properly? Did my face shield move at all?⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Everyday I see nurses do their very best to provide the sickest patients with the care they need.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Every day I have a family member calling in asking what we can do to help their family.. whether its a new trial they read about or something else.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Everyday I see case managers/social workers do their very best to make sure that these patients who are "COVID survivors" have the proper care they need at home.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Everyday, I am more critical of myself than I thought I’d be. And most of this is because I know that I’m dealing with patients who can get very sick very fast, due to this virus. It’s like the adrenaline never leaves me. Even when I come home, I check my charts to make sure my patients are doing okay.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ I'm learning to not be hard on myself. I am consuming so much information every day, and the emotional baggage I take home every day is not light. I really care for the patients I'm in charge of. I thank the nurses who have been so patient with me. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ At the start of this rotation, you couldn’t tell the difference between me and a chicken with it’s head cut off.⁣⁣ And now, at the the almost halfway mark, I’m proud of the progress I’ve made. I’ve learned that to really progress, I had to be humble about my weaknesses, but not let my failures define my attitude. This really comes into play when you’re working in a fast paced setting. You just gotta keep moving forward. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ And so I tell you, keep moving forward.. for whatever it is in life. ❤️ There’s people to see, there’s people to save 👩🏻‍⚕️

⭐️600 calorie Chick-fil-A dinner to end a looooong work day 💻 . I love my job, but just like the end of a semester, the end of an internship is always HARD! There’s always so many meetings that need to happen as you’re passing off the project, things that need to be documented, etc. So today was one of those days where it’s 8:30pm and I have yet to eat a vegetable or move my body (like, at all ). BUT—progress, not perfection, because in the past I would have let this continue on for days. Today, I got a vegetable, I stayed hydrated, and I’m going to do at least 20 min of movement before I go to bed if for no other reason than it will help me sleep better!!! 😴 . “You can have it all but not all at once”—I think each season is unbalanced in some way, but that the goal is to have *overall* balance. When I think about my habits, I’m successful with them because they’re designed for the seasons when exercise is NOT my priority (and these same habits can easily expand for those seasons when exercise CAN be my priority ). I think we really have to focus on being present in the season that we’re in, and embracing the imbalance that comes with it—because it doesn’t last forever, it’s always just a season, and we can always learn or be grateful for something from that season. I’m grateful for getting to spend time with my sister, and getting to work hard and learn more about programming—and this is what matters the most in life. Exercise & food are meant to ENHANCE life, not BE life, so when I have to downshift, I’m a-okay with recognizing that and I’m sure glad I put some flexible, achievable habits in place. ✅

Hello everyone! Welcome to my page, The Addiction Scientist. The purpose of this page is to carve out a niche of information about addiction and mental health. 💊Who am I? I am a 3rd-year PhD student in Preventive Medicine at USC Keck School of Medicine #trojans ✌🏼 under the umbrella of health behavior research, I focus my efforts on all things addiction. However, like every Scientist, I have an area of expertise which for me is researching how adverse childhood experiences (ACE )/polyvictimization (PV ) lead to mental health implications and addictive behaviors later in life (current focus is Young Adults ). In short, I am a behavioral scientist who focuses on public health! Prior to starting my PhD studies I obtained an MS in Global Medicine from USC and a BS in Biopsychology from UCSB. I also am a published author (peer-reviewed, textbook and media articles ) and have been teaching Substance and Behavioral Addictions at UCLA for over 5 years. 💊What is ACE? What is PV? We’ll get into that in another post, cause I’ll be talking about it! 💊Why addiction? Someone once told me that people who dedicate their lives to studying addiction have been deeply impacted by it. They are correct. 💊Why Instagram? There’s so much misconstrued information out there about the meaning of common terminology such as addiction, substance use, substance misuse, problematic use, binging behaviors etc.. that I just had to hop on social media and inform. 💊What can I expect from this page? My purpose is to have anyone who visits my page to have a solid introductory understanding of addiction. Also, this is a judgement free zone. Addiction and mental health are sensitive topics and I’m here to educate and reduce the stigma. I look forward to building this platform, thank you for stopping by and supporting 🖤

⚠️⚠️ a 260 boat fleet of industrial fishing vessels from China have entered Galapagos waters. the Galapagos are a world heritage site and within the territory of Ecuador. according to local officials in Ecuador, there are a total of 297 vessels, that are fishing. on august 5th, China negotiated with Ecuador and will be allowed to fish outside of a moratorium from September to November in the western high seas of the Galapagos protection zone. outside of this, they will fish under observation from Ecuador, and if suspected of illegal practices within protected waters, will be punished. many of these species in this PROTECTED area are highly endangered ‼️ due to years of previous illegal fishing, and the environment will be highly damaged due to highly unsustainable and disruptive mass fishing practices. "Progress, far from consisting in change, depends on retentiveness. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." - George Santayana, Life of Reason. 🤔⁣ ⁣ No matter how much I want to forget the dumb stuff I did back in high school, I need to remember it so that I'm not making the same mistakes in university. Now that we're going back to school soon, I thought it'd be interesting (and painful 🙈 ) for me to look back on my four years in high school (seems like it was a century ago ) and think about what I regret and what i don't regret doing. Hopefully I'll have less regrets about university! Check out the video in the link in my bio ; )

"You don't look like an engineer." Raise your hand if you have ever gotten this comment. ✋🏻 As a woman in Engineering, I have been hearing this ever since my first year of college and as much as I wish, I don't anticipate this to stop anytime soon. However, I know that I can individually do my part to move the needle forward towards equity in STEM. As current engineers, we have the duty to especially encourage young women that they too can become an engineer as well as how rewarding a career it is! I am constantly inspired by my fellow #WomeninSTEM on here who are stomping out these stereotypes and helping us to rid the #STEM field of outdated gender norms. Thank you especially to @chloetheengineer for starting this challenge and @bossbuilderbabe for thinking of the excellent hashtag #stompingoutstereotypes for the challenge!

lengthy post alert— I am a first generation college graduate. I have a masters degree in biomedical science. I am a PhD candidate of neuroscience with a focus on clinical diagnostic approaches to brain disorders. My dissertation focuses on mapping brains of patients who have #neurosurgery for epilepsy. I am a neurophysiologist. I am a scientist. right now, science has an approachability problem. so many folks who have never so much as wondered what career scientists do are passing judgments over us. the scientific method is not without failure. we fail every single day, and if you’re me, even multiple times in a day. i am thankful for good science and legitimate conversations around how we do research. I have spent the last 4 years leaning heavily on my clinical colleagues and receiving the same. we fail and succeed together. we grind every day! examples like @lhh_neurosurgery get it right. you see the struggle, the hope, the shortcoming, the perseverance, and maybe success. every step is progress, even if it’s backwards, because we learn. this show really shines an important light on the humanity behind the white coat and the bench. you see good, genuine people doing our very best. with conspiracy running wild, standing behind our doctors and scientists is so important. I am thankful for every opportunity I get to step inside this building and do my best to help those who are suffering. this is why we do it every day, despite baseless condemnation of malice. I highly recommend talking to us, not about us, and I highly recommend watching this series. it gets it right. they also have a great summer webinar series called BRAINterns! we are in this for you and your families, and I will fight every day for that ability. @yularifilms @netflix #LenoxHillOnNetflix #LenoxHill #ClinicalResearcher #EndEpilepsy #WomeninSTEM

My dad got me this cute little periodic table for my birthday this summer. The first chemistry test I ever took was in high school through a community college, and I barely pulled a C. I had never felt so stupid in my life, I thought I was going to love science and I was struggling big time. I had no idea chemistry was so hard. I’m stubborn af though and I started arriving to class by 7:15 am every day to sit in the professor’s office and nag him for answers. I’m pretty sure he grew to hate me but after some grueling early mornings I did end up pulling an A in his course. I’m studying chemistry now, and I wish I could tell 16 year old me that the struggle would make me love it even more, and a C didn’t make me stupid, it just made me human. My mom told me she liked my previous career plan, not science or medicine. I was worried pursuing a full time career in medicine or a stem field would doom my future family (it won’t. ) I obviously don’t know the future but I’m so glad I chose this for myself and I’ve stuck with it even through the tears. I hope today’s ramble resonated with you somehow, whether you’re interested in science or not at all (stem is cool and all but not elevated above any other field ) ❤️ #steminist #womeninscience #womeninstem #discoverunder5k #connectingcreativecuties

I’m blown away by the response to my last post. Social media gets a bad rap, but Instagram can create amazing communities that unite people across all divides. I received supportive messages that nearly brought me to tears, and I saved all of them, to remind myself when things get difficult. Words of love from: Women in STEM living similar experiences to mine. Young women feeling trepidation about venturing into science. Mothers of daughters interested in science who have already received pushback. I’m not going anywhere. Powerful women aren’t going anywhere. This style-loving, sweat-obsessed scientist isn’t going anywhere. #womeninstem #womeninscience #sheisnotlost

Yesterday was my first day back in the lab .. here’s how I felt in emojis: . 💤 Exhausted 😷 Learning to work in a mask for 6 hours + 💃 Excited 🛠 👩🏻‍💻 took a while to remember commands/procedures for stuff in the lab .. been out for 5 months so had forgotten a few things 😢 😊 Was so nice to be back

How do you rebound from a difficult experience? This path isn’t easy. Everything is not going to go according to plan and you won’t always be successful at everything. So how do you come back from a blow to keep moving? Recently, I’ve been experiencing this personally, as I read these ridiculous stream of papers that are being published. But in the past I’ve also failed important exams (scroll back ), had experiments fail, and had difficulties parenting. But failure is a part of life for most people. So there’s a few things I do to handle these situations. First, I don’t work for external validation. This is a difficult skill to gain but it’s easier to face hard situations with this thought in mind. It can’t always be about the reward, because the reward won’t always be present. When I do have these experiences, I give myself the chance to feel whatever I feel. So if you watch my story, you can typically see my response in real time (usually anger ). But I don’t stay there. Because that prevents me from moving on. Finally, I have to come up with a plan to move on. I can’t linger in the bad situation. So for the papers, I decided to do an objective review. For exams, I meet with our education counselor, I look into study methods, I figure out how to get better. But sitting in the disappointing situation is not progress. Situations like these are when discipline is more important than motivation. Motivation is not always present but if you focus on consistent behavior, you can keep moving.

Always remember you can be both 👸🏼👷🏼‍♀️ Don’t let anyone tell you who you should be and keep you in a box!!!

This morning I thought I would repost these gorgeous set of Chompers we made. For #scienceonsaturdays Medical Science Theme. My creation ended up being donated to a school for special needs and is much loved. This is what we did it. We saved 20 x 600ml coke bottles. 10 for top of the mouth and the bottom. (You can use 1 litre or even 2 litre bottles for an even bigger mouth ). We spray painted the bottles with white satin paint. (Able to paint plastic ) Then we cut the bottles down evenly. Initially using a Stanley knife. Then we used scissors to cut them evenly. We used a large corrugated piece of cardboard. So we could fold it in half.
