We're taking a couple weeks off, so this week we're releasing one of the earliest episodes we recorded - paleontologist MARY ANNING! And if you didn't know, Mallory is absolutely obsessed with dinosaurs (this is a photo of her volunteering on a paleontology dig with @ndgspaleo last summer ), and couldn't contain her excitement, so we split the episode into two parts! Celebrations are officially starting now! We published our 300th field guide for BRAZIL! 🇧🇷 🥂 The field guide “Flora of the Itaperi Campus of the State University of Ceará (UECE ), Brasil, was produced by Gabrielle Glayssa Lopes de Oliveira, Valéria da Silva Sampaio, and Eliseu Marlônio Pereira de Lucena, with pictures collected in the 18.37 ha of the urbanized area. Their study in the area revealed rich biodiversity represented by 135 species, 122 genera and 57 botanical families, most of which are native to Brazil. The authors believe that this guide will assist in future research, especially in the teaching of Botany, in addition to contributing to the conservation and preservation of local biodiversity. Inspired by @paulinacastrellon ! ✨ • My page has grown so much over the past few months and I can’t thank you all for the wonderful support & love! 💓 • For many women across the world, it’s not easy trekking through a male-dominated field and a field that lacks representation. 🌎 This can cause a lot of anxiety and stress! Believe it or not, the first thing I did when I looked into labs for grad school was pull up the lab pictures to see if there were females & diversity in the lab! Has anyone else done something similar or is it just me? 🤔 • Here’s to all the woman pushing through uncharted territory, the struggles and hurdles to share and spread their love for science! ❤️ . . . #womenempowerment #womentransformingscience #womeninstemm #steminist #feminist #neuroscience #neuroscientist #researcher #inspiration #science #stem #scientist #sciencelover #lablife #womeninscience

I'll be honest.. I didn't quite understand what everyone meant when they said "you're starting residency during a pandemic, be prepared".⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Everyday, I walk into every patient's room with an N95, a surgical mask, and a face shield. I can't wait to take them off because I have a hard time taking deep breaths in them. But I can't.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Every time I leave a patient's room, I have so much anxiety about any possible way I could've contaminated myself. Did I sanitize enough times? Were my gloves on properly? Did my face shield move at all?⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Everyday I see nurses do their very best to provide the sickest patients with the care they need.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Every day I have a family member calling in asking what we can do to help their family.. whether its a new trial they read about or something else.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Everyday I see case managers/social workers do their very best to make sure that these patients who are "COVID survivors" have the proper care they need at home.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Everyday, I am more critical of myself than I thought I’d be. And most of this is because I know that I’m dealing with patients who can get very sick very fast, due to this virus. It’s like the adrenaline never leaves me. Even when I come home, I check my charts to make sure my patients are doing okay.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ I'm learning to not be hard on myself. I am consuming so much information every day, and the emotional baggage I take home every day is not light. I really care for the patients I'm in charge of. I thank the nurses who have been so patient with me. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ At the start of this rotation, you couldn’t tell the difference between me and a chicken with it’s head cut off.⁣⁣ And now, at the the almost halfway mark, I’m proud of the progress I’ve made. I’ve learned that to really progress, I had to be humble about my weaknesses, but not let my failures define my attitude. This really comes into play when you’re working in a fast paced setting. You just gotta keep moving forward. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ And so I tell you, keep moving forward.. for whatever it is in life. ❤️ There’s people to see, there’s people to save 👩🏻‍⚕️

“ I became a social worker because we grew up poor. No one guided us or helped us in our community. A lot of people aren't educated or have awareness of resources available to them. Some people just need support to get back on their feet, or to help themselves with decisions. Life isn't linear and we all need help at some point in life. "That's where social workers come in. As a clinical social worker I guide people. Intoherwildlife’s Thursday Feature: This Thursday we feature Sophie! @adayinthewildlifesoph She’s a Wildlife Conservationists and blogger who is raising awareness for poaching in South Africa. Sophie’s word’s, “When I was younger lion king was my favourite disney film and I’ve always loved animals. I studied animal behaviour at university but still wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do until I went on a field trip to South Africa in 2017. I had the time of my life there and stayed on an amazing reserve that taught me all about the extent of rhino poaching and all of the issues they face in their conservation. From this my passion for the cause was born and ever since I have been determined to focus my career on raising awareness of conservation issues. I focused my Conservation MSc on the driving factors of rhino poaching and it’s impacts on tourism. I recently started up a blog to talk about conservation and showcase my wildlife photography, and can’t wait till it’s safe to go back to SA.” • • • #wildlifeconservation #wildlife #featured #awesomepeople #womeninscience #rhinoconservation #nature #naturelovers #animallovers

I’m blown away by the response to my last post. Social media gets a bad rap, but Instagram can create amazing communities that unite people across all divides. I received supportive messages that nearly brought me to tears, and I saved all of them, to remind myself when things get difficult. Words of love from: Women in STEM living similar experiences to mine. Young women feeling trepidation about venturing into science. Mothers of daughters interested in science who have already received pushback. I’m not going anywhere. Powerful women aren’t going anywhere. This style-loving, sweat-obsessed scientist isn’t going anywhere. #womeninstem #womeninscience #sheisnotlost

Melanin on 1000. This is the glow I attained from three weeks of golden weekends. Clearly there is a correlation between golden weekends and golden skin. For those who don’t know, a golden weekend is when you get BOTH Saturday and Sunday off during residency. Usually we work 6 days a week for on average 12 hours a day. I made sure to pick a residency program where there were guaranteed golden weekends and you see the result ✨☀️

The first results of @globalfinprint , a new global-scale analysis of the status of reef sharks led by Aaron MacNeil at @dalhousieu , have been published in Nature. Congratulations to Mo Johnson and Jorge Angulo-Valdés, who contributed data from our Indonesian and Cuban marine sites to the study! Data for this study came from >15,000 baited remote underwater video stations (BRUVS ) that were deployed on 371 reefs in 58 nations. Results show reef shark populations overall to be severely depleted, with up to 20% of reefs surveyed having no sharks at all. However, shark abundance remained relatively high on some reefs, particularly those within protected areas, with fishing catch limits, and where fisheries did not use gillnets and longlines. These results indicate which management techniques are effective in conserving shark populations, and it is recommended that such techniques be introduced elsewhere to prevent further declines in reef shark species. This paper was published in Nature and can be found online! Send us a DM if you’d like the link. Global projects like this take a huge amount of work from many different people. A full list of the team and collabroators can be found on the @globalfinprint website! @BBCnews and @bbcnewsbeat have also written about the study, not once, but twice! If you’d like the link to the articles then send us a DM 🦈 Photo - NNOA National Ocean Service: http://ow.ly/9nae50AQb9V

Getting ready for my first day on inpatient medicine tomorrow! Eeeek I’m a bit nervous. My team is on call, and we will also be cross-covering for the other medicine teams since it’s the weekend. So it will be a long, busy day. Wish me luck!⁣ ⁣ This past month has been pretty surreal. Things as simple as signing orders and writing prescriptions are so special, because it took so much hard work to get here. Also I just love the people I work with and the patients I care for. Residency is so much better than med school y’all 😂 But each step of the way is so special, so cherish where you’re at right now 💕⁣ ⁣ My plan is to bring meals, lots of snacks and coffee to power through. Some of my favorites that I have packed and ready are these @autumnsgold cinnamon almond bars, strawberries, and kombucha! ⁣ ⁣ I like these autumn’s gold bars bc the ingredient list is short and simple. They’re also grain-free! You can get them exclusively at Costco 😋 #sponsored #grainfreegold

1st headshot as a Student Physician! 📸🥼🩺 Being able to study medicine and wear this white coat is a huge honor, and I wouldn’t be here without some amazing people who helped me along the long journey to medical school: 🩹 Thank you to my family, who have been by my side since I first thought “Maybe I want to be a doctor?” 🩸 Thank you to all my friends, who celebrated the highs and picked me up from the lows. 🦠 Thank you to my professors/teachers/mentors who provided selfless guidance and motivation (and explained the Krebs cycle 800 times ). 💊 Thank you to all my healthcare coworkers through the years who instilled a joy of medicine and taught me little skills along the way. 🧪 Thank you to my study pals for the laughs and snacks - and tears 😅 - through many late nights of studying science. 🌡 Thank you to Caleb, for being my rock and the best support going into these next 4 years of med school. 🔬Thank you to ALL of the healthcare workers who let me shadow and encouraged me to get to where I am today. ❤️ Thank you, mom and dad, for believing in me since day 1. I love you so much. My dad got me this cute little periodic table for my birthday this summer. The first chemistry test I ever took was in high school through a community college, and I barely pulled a C. I had never felt so stupid in my life, I thought I was going to love science and I was struggling big time. I had no idea chemistry was so hard. I’m stubborn af though and I started arriving to class by 7:15 am every day to sit in the professor’s office and nag him for answers. I’m pretty sure he grew to hate me but after some grueling early mornings I did end up pulling an A in his course. I’m studying chemistry now, and I wish I could tell 16 year old me that the struggle would make me love it even more, and a C didn’t make me stupid, it just made me human. My mom told me she liked my previous career plan, not science or medicine. I was worried pursuing a full time career in medicine or a stem field would doom my future family (it won’t. ) I obviously don’t know the future but I’m so glad I chose this for myself and I’ve stuck with it even through the tears. I hope today’s ramble resonated with you somehow, whether you’re interested in science or not at all (stem is cool and all but not elevated above any other field ) ❤️ #steminist #womeninscience #womeninstem #discoverunder5k #connectingcreativecuties
