A research team, led by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE ) Argonne National Laboratory in collaboration with Northern Illinois University, has discovered a new electrocatalyst that converts carbon dioxide (CO2 ) and water into ethanol with very high energy efficiency, high selectivity for the desired final product and low cost. Ethanol is a particularly desirable commodity because it is an ingredient in nearly all U.S. gasoline and is widely used as an intermediate product in the chemical, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. . . 3 SHIFTS FOR PERFECTIONISM: ⠀ In undergrad, I used to feel guilty about not caring about perfection in my work. ⠀ I thought it meant I didn’t care enough about what I was doing. ⠀ I got to grad school and strived to be this “perfect” student - always having data, never messing up an experiment, and trying to stay “ahead”. ⠀ But then I realized my advisor and mentors all do these 3 things: 👉🏼they’re never afraid to say “I don’t know” 👉🏼they aim for completion over perfection 👉🏼they’re never afraid to fail ⠀ I finally was able to let the pressure go and just focus on completing my next milestone. ⠀ Your “good enough” is sometimes exactly what’s needed. ⠀ Tell me what you say to yourself when things aren’t “perfect”👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼 ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #wocinSTEM #womeninbioengineering #personaldevelopment #mindset #innerwork #lifecoach #gradschoolcoach #mindsetcoach #gradschoollife #phdlife #phdproblems #gradschoolproblems #phdbalance #filipinasinstem #firstgendocs #thedailystoic #stoicism #stoicphilosophy ⠀ ⠀

#WOCinSTEM #8 🧑🏻‍🔬 At 16 years old, Tu contracted tuberculosis🤒, an experience that inspired her to pursue a career in medical research. After graduating from Beijing Medical University🧑🏻‍🎓, she joined China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, where she is now Chief Scientist. Prior to the late 1960s, malaria was effectively treated and controlled by chloroquine and quinolines, until the development of drug-resistant malaria plasmodium parasites🦠. Resurgence of the disease and rapidly increased mortality posed a significant global challenge🏥. North Vietnam asked China to find a cure for chloroquine-resistant malaria, as it was causing more casualties among soldiers in the Vietnam War than the battles themselves. For this reason, Tu was recruited to a top-secret 🤫government unit known as "Project 523", named after the date the project launched, May 23, 1967, which also marks the beginning of her most recognized research. In early 1969, Tu was appointed head of Project 523. By 1971, Tu and her team had screened 🔍over 2,000 traditional Chinese recipes and made 380 herbal extracts from 200 herbs, which were then tested on mice 🐁 and found that one compound was effective: sweet wormwood, a traditional malaria medicine dating back to 400 AD. After refining the extraction techniques, Tu and her colleagues obtained the pure substance and named it qinghaosu, or artemisinin. To expedite the safety evaluation, Tu volunteered to be the first human subject. Later, by October 1972, the first clinical trial had become a success: all patients recovered and no malaria parasites were detected after treatment. ✅ Tu’s discovery was a breakthrough in twentieth-century tropical medicine. In 2015, she was one of the 3 winners of the Nobel Prize 🏅in Physiology or Medicine, making her the first Chinese Nobel laureate in that category, and the first Chinese female 🇨🇳 to receive a Nobel Prize in any category. Additionally, in 2011, Tu was the first Chinese recipient of the Albert Lasker Award in Clinical Medicine. The Lasker Foundation called the discovery of artemisinin “arguably the most important pharmaceutical intervention in the last half-century.” 👏

POV: my laptop looking at me run through all possible scenarios of Monday’s lab meeting.   ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This weekend I tried to do the reading I said I would. I found myself questioning everything. Am I reading this paper right? I’m almost done with the paper, why haven’t I gotten an idea yet? Maybe I should skip to another paper, I might be wasting my time. Sigh, maybe I should eat, I’ll feel better.   ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is the process. It’s not always cute, it’s not always Instagram-able, it’s not always fun but it needs to happen. There is no real formula for coming up with research ideas, I just need to trust the process, discern fear from self reflection, and restrategise. I’m going to put in the work to achieve what I want. Accepting strategy recommendations🙈  ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #phd #blackphds #phdjourney #phdlife #phdlife #blackinacademia #blackacademia #motivation #productivity #research #explorepage #womenscientists #womeninstem #blackscientist #gradschoolproblems #gradschoollife #gradschool #wocinstem

Emphasis on the “YOUR dreams”. . . Ask yourself today, “What steps am I taking to live MY dreams?” and more importantly, confirm that the dreams you are after are YOURS...not your parents, not your children’s, not your teachers, and not even your ancestors. I am living MY dreams but in honor of my loved ones that are here and those that came before me. There is a difference. . . Figuring out your research area of interest can be difficult: especially if grad school will be your first research experience. 🧪 When I was figuring out what program to apply to and what kind of research I wanted to do, I had to reflect on my past experiences and education. Doing this helped me put the pieces of the puzzle together and find the research area I love! 🧫 I took this approach because I am more than just a student: my research is a culmination of a lot of my positive and negative experiences in life, school, and science. There are professors and PIs out there that can give you a topic to research, but why take that route? You’ll be less inclined to carry on with your experiments if you don’t even like the topic. Trust me, you gotta like the topic: it’s yours for a few years. ⚙️ If you're applying to graduate school and want to know more about how to choose your research topic, please read the latest blog post on www.TheCurlyScientist.com! #LinkInBio

Sis, your presence as a Black woman in STEM will always break the mold. . We need more Black women in STEM so we redefine what a scientist looks like . We need more Black women in STEM so we redefine what STEM success looks like . We need more Black women in STEM because in the past few years Black PhD recipients were less than 6% (NSF ) - which is a peak . . We need more Black women in STEM because there are ZERO Black women who are CEOs of Fortune 500 companies. . . We need more Black women in STEM so that the little scientist who is in the class as the only one, knows that she is right where she is supposed to be. . We need more Black women in STEM so that other little scientists join her. . . Sis, we are SIGNIFICANT. As a matter of fact our significance defies what is the norm and will continue to do so till we are a part of the norm . . We need to talk about racism in science. • Although there is no scientific basis for race, “race science” and scientific racism has been around for a very long time and still persists today. Whether it’s the persistence of racist terminology, implicit biases of scientists, or scientific models and equipment tailored to these false claims, scientific racism is still a very real problem. • As scientists, it’s our responsibility to evaluate our own work and the history of our fields. Without scientists actively doing anti-racism work, we run the risk of allowing the abuse of scientific ethics to continue supporting truly evil institutions like genocide, imprisonment, and slavery. • Science is meant to be objective, peer-reviewed, and available to the public. Science is NOT meant to be misused in attempts to support racist ideologies already disproved time and time again. • What anti-racism and active DEI advocacy are your departments/fields doing? • • • • • #womeninstem #womeninscience #science #engineering #womenintech #wocinstem #wocintech #activism #feminism #civilrights #racialjustice #bipoc #stem #blackandstem #blacklivesmatter #blackscientists #blm #blackinstem #reproductiverights #blackafinstem #medicine #med #doctor #reproductivehealth #history #historyofscience #health #healthcare #holocaust #jewish

Full blog post up now! Check the link in the bio to see more about the research that went into this and the breakdown for all demographics. ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼✊🏻 As we advocate for diversity in STEM, we must continue to center on racial justice. ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼✊🏻 On social media platforms, the #blm hashtag has allowed for more individuals to highlight their experiences as Black people in every day situations. We’ve seen #shutdownstem , #blackintheivory , #blackbirdersweek , #blackhikersweek , and #blackinastro . We still have quite a ways to go but giving Black people a platform to share their stories and having their colleagues listen and support them is a step in the right direction. ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼✊🏻 As #womeninstem begins to trend, it’s our responsibility to continue centering these conversations on supporting Black people and women of color in these fields. ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼✊🏻 #womeninstem #womeninscience #science #engineering #womenintech #wocinstem #wocintech #wocinscience #womenempowerment #activism #feminism #civilrights #racialjustice #bipoc #stem #blackandstem #blacklivesmatter #blackscientists #blm #blackinstem #blackwomenintechnology #blackafinstem

THE LOW DOWN 👀 on ✨Wonder Women in STEM 2020 ✨ #wwinstem2020     I was lucky enough to win a ticket from @teamkorie which, looking back feels like a *meant to be* future light bulb moment 💡 Here's 3 things learned:    👩🏽‍🔬 Women in STEM in America can lose between $80,000 - $900,000 during a 40-year career because of the gender pay gap 😮. HOW TO COUNTER THIS: We learned tools for ✨ self-advocacy ✨ to get the respect, voice and 💲we deserve!    👩🏼‍🔬 Time management has been a weakness of mine until @prasha_dutra broke it down into TIME MANAGEMENT VS ENERGY MANAGEMENT: by writing out the energizing and de-energizing tasks you need to complete in a day! The 🔑 is to mix between energizing tasks like a work out or taking scicomm photos🏃🏽‍♀️and de-energizing tasks like textbook reading or sleeping in 📚 to help to keep your energy up to get through your day efficiently! And DON'T ❌ do one task for more than 2 hours! ❌    👩🏻‍🔬 We're ALL entrepreneurs!!! Even if you have your 9-5 career down, you can build your side hussle to boost your reach!🧮 Like updating your socials, growing your scicomm dreams or stepping out to creating a product or service that you want to share! I already have some ideas in mind, with the tools on the way but this community is going to help me shed the fear, because no one is going to stand up for you like you do! 💕    All cheesiness aside, I really connected with the women in this conference! We openly talked about what STEM superpower we have, like empathy 💕 and creativity 🎨🖌️ and how to utilize them in a STEM setting - I got freeing and inviting vibes that you do nottt get from the usual white male dominated STEM conferences that we're used to. I'm so grateful for the representation and to have the confidence to BE THE CHANGE!    🔥 🙋🏽‍♀️👩🏽‍🔬💁🏽‍♀️🤸🏾‍♀️🏋🏾‍♀️🔥 Some of the fantastic people I met: @ileana_lily @biotale_illustration @livinthephdream @eco .et.al @rae .of.science @the_daily_biologist @lindsayinthelab @lablife .media @thephdprincess @audreyisabelpe @chaozinorder Will you guys be there next year?☺ #scicomm #womxninstem #science #photooftheday #thisiswhatascientistlookslike #phdfresh #wocinstem

Kicking the work week off on a positive note. One thing I can say that I am truly fortunate to have been able to take advantage of during this viral pandemic, was investing in myself. FIGHT for yourself and what you want because no one should have real estate on the trajectory of your life. . . . During this time, I decided to leave my previous position and accept a new role as a Director of Microbiology and Public Health. I have also been working on some special projects you'll learn more about in the future. And all of it is in efforts to provide for public health, to give back, and to fulfill my dreams. . . . Back when I was in grad school, something I truly appreciated was my autonomy/free time. And once you have a taste of that, you never want to let it go or take it for granted. I'm sure many of you now know that feeling, if you never experienced it before. Cherish the value of your time. Its so special. . . 📸: @chanandhiscamera . . . #motivation #mondaymotivation #positivity #newbeginnings #change #advocate #microbiology #microbiologist #STEM #blackinstem #wocinstem #BLACKPHDS #thisiswhatascientistlookslike #blog #blogger

🏠 #WFH is cool and all but I miss adventures on center!⁣⁣ ⁣ 💻 I know that many of us haven’t been told what day we’ll be back in the office... If you’re like me, you’ve slowly put your work space together at home, as you realize that you’ll be home for longer than you anticipated. Online shopping for office supplies (big or small ) has been key to making this experience more comfortable! Even rearranging your workspace can help. 10/10 recommend taking some time to create your ideal work environment! ⁣⁣ ⁣ 🌟 Once it’s safe for all of us to go back to our workplaces, I know I’m going to be ecstatic!
