It just amazes me how people built castle and the still stand today and they still have a significant impact in their architecture #architecture #welsharchitecture

So this beauty is not for sale and I hope never will be as it’s a @cadwcymruwales owned miners cottage in Cwmdare. I love the rich valleys history and I also love our architecture which was more about function over style but now, we can see both! The Old Corn Mill, Llanmihangel Built sometime between 1809 and 1839, the former mill saw several short periods of use before decline. It replaced two earlier mills in the settlement, both of which are recorded as also being unproductive. It's now being given a new lease of life by undergoing restoration and conversion to a holiday let. As part of this work, an archaeological watching brief has been maintained, through which we have uncovered the gear pit and both millstones. #historicmill #industrialheritage #millstone #mill #cornmill #welshmill #welshheritage #wales #welsharchitecture #buildingsarchaeology #oldbuilding #oldbuildings #archaeology #heritage #oldhouses #welsharchaeology #britisharchaeology #UKArchaeology #archaeologist #archeologist #archaeologylife #archaeological #archaeologistsofinstagram #archeologia #Archaeologie #archéologie

St Michael's Church, Llanfihangel-y-Creuddyn. This cruciform church with central tower, is the best surviving of three such churches in Ceredigion. Records, along with local tradition, give us the year 1268 as the date of consecration. As was common in Wales, the church underwent a sustain campaign of work throughout the early 16th century. This upgraded the roof and refitted the tower. Dendrochronology (tree-ring dating ), provided dates of 1501-14 for the nave and transept roofs, 1518-37 for the tower, and 1537-8 for the bell frame. A community project is currently working to undertake repairs and improvements to the church, which has been boosted by support from the Heritage Lottery Fund. #church #churchinwales #churcharchitecture #historicchurch #medievalchurch #dendrochronology #heritagelotteryfund #welshheritage #wales #welsharchitecture #buildingsarchaeology #oldbuilding #medieval #medievalwales #medievalworld #oldbuildings #archaeology #heritage #welsharchaeology #britisharchaeology #UKArchaeology #archaeologist #archeologist #archaeologylife #archaeological #archaeologistsofinstagram #archeologia #Archaeologie #archéologie

Yesterday I submitted my dissertation for my masters in Building History. It’s about the history of ironworkers’ housing in Merthyr Tydfil and here’s an image I made of one of the most interesting examples - Pentrebach Square, AKA The Triangle. This was a planned village of ironworkers’ houses built over several phases between the late 1830s and 1840s and eventually complete in 1851. It was built by the Plymouth Iron Co. for employees at the Pentrebach Ironworks and their families and was a pioneering example of community-orientated planning, with houses arranged around a communal green rather than in parallel rows with individual gardens, like those next door at Long Row. Sadly, the whole thing was demolished in 1977, despite studies that showed it would have been cheaper to renovate the houses than clear the site and build a new development, never mind so much more sustainable, and that the houses had 12.5% more floor area than an average new build anyway. It’s such a waste and a reminder that significant historic buildings are everywhere in Wales and they aren’t just castles/country houses/civic buildings!

Hafod Ucha, Bontddu The ruinous early-16th century cruck hall house sits neatly nestled in the upland landscape of Gwynedd. A stack and floor to the low end was inserted in circa 1600. Unfortunately, the house fell out of use in the 20th century, now surviving with just one cruck truss standing. #vernaculararchitecture #cruck #ruins #stonehouse #welshheritage #wales #welsharchitecture #buildingsarchaeology #oldbuilding #oldbuildings #archaeology #heritage #medievalwales #medievalworld #medieval #hallhouse #oldhouses #welsharchaeology #britisharchaeology #UKArchaeology #archaeologist #archeologist #archaeologylife #archaeological #archaeologistsofinstagram #archeologia #Archaeologie #archéologie

Ruperra Castle, Rudry One of only two houses in this mock castle form in Wales, Ruperra was built for Thomas Morgan in 1626. After a fire in 1783, the house was remodelled to the designs of Thomas Hardwick Junior. This saw the gabled elevations replaced with moch battlements, along with new internal arrangements. Unfortunately, a second fire in 1942 saw the house reduced to ruin, from which it was never rebuilt. A programme of works in 2018 saw the careful dismantling of the south chimney. #countryestate #countryresidence #countryhouses #welshheritage #wales #welsharchitecture #renaissancearchitecture #castle #buildingsarchaeology #oldbuilding #oldbuildings #archaeology #heritage #oldhouses #welsharchaeology #welshhistory #britisharchaeology #UKArchaeology #archaeologist #archeologist #archaeologylife #archaeological #archaeologistsofinstagram #archeologia #Archaeologie #archéologie

St Gwenog's Church, Llanwenog The most complete surviving late medieval church in Ceredigion. The nave and chancel are largely 14th century, with a 15th century chapel. In the nave sits a 12th century font, on which are carved the faces of the twelve apostles. The tower is reported to have been commissioned by Sir Rhys ap Thomas to commemorate the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, with the nave roof being replaced at the same time. In the early-20th century the church was restored by noted architect W.D. Caroe. #church #churchinwales #ruralchurch #historicchurch #medieval #medievalwales #medievalworld #welshheritage #wales #welsharchitecture #buildingsarchaeology #oldbuilding #oldbuildings #archaeology #heritage #welsharchaeology #britisharchaeology #UKArchaeology #archaeologist #archeologist #archaeologylife #archaeological #archaeologistsofinstagram #archeologia #Archaeologie #archéologie

All Saints Church, Cellan. The lovely little Grade II* church found in Cellan, Ceredigion. When refurbishment replaced the roof to the nave and chancel in 1862, part of the early-16th roof was used to cover the porch. In 1908 the church was again refurbished, this time to the Arts and Crafts designs of Herbert Luck North. #church #churchinwales #ruralchurches #ceredigion #welshheritage #wales #historicchurch #countrychurches #welsharchitecture #buildingsarchaeology #oldbuilding #oldbuildings #archaeology #heritage #welsharchaeology #britisharchaeology #UKArchaeology #archaeologist #archeologist #archaeologylife #archaeological #archaeologistsofinstagram #archeologia #Archaeologie #archéologie

I've been looking through some old images and thought I'd share these images of this woodland folly I designed and built in 2012 during my masters studies at @cardiffuni @wsofarchi . The hut is made from 180 identical larch planks (1200 x 30 x 110mm ), a by-product of timber thinning. The folly sat at the place where four different types of woodland met, and the form of each side (rather laboriously in hindsight ) reflected this. Mainly the project makes me remember assembling it over 3 days in the rain and then going back to the cottage we were staying in to watch 'Come Dine with Me'' on an old tv with Sarah Braun, now of @archerandbraun ! A year later a similar project by @oopeaa popped up in the Shenzhen Biennale, great minds think alike... 🙄🙄🙄😅 Kate Darby was a great tutor for this project and it's always a pleasure to follow her work with @katedarbyarchitects and @invisible_studio . . . #architecture #folly #hut #cardiffuniversity #wsa #wales #design #timber #sustainability #building #sustainablearchitecture #timberarchitecture #welsharchitecture #coedcymru #britisharchitecture #primer #woodland #forest #trees #larch

It's all in the details! Congratulations to @martinedwardsarchitects on winning the A Small Projects awards 2020 in association with @marley_ltd for thier House in North Wales. 🏆 The stone walls of an existing attached outbuilding were largely retained, strengthened and remodelled, below a new roof, to provide a dining room and kitchen. A new addition, partly on the site of a former byre, contains a bedroom and bathroom. It is offset in plan to define a small outdoor space, and to be concealed from the public track which provides the defining view of the cottage. New elements are simply detailed using familiar, locally available materials. The new addition is built using a highly insulated timber frame, and clad in corrugated sheeting – a material in common with many of the small agricultural shelters present within the immediate landscape. The new window openings are taken to eaves level with concealed lintels, and the roof sheeting brought to a flush verge respecting the prevailing rural typology. 📷 @maxcreasy Swipe in our story to see more pics and discover which from the shortlist won the sustainability prize and who was the readers' choice! #ajsmallprojects #ajsp2020 #retrofit #retrofirst . . . . . . #architectsjournal #smallprojects #architecture #architecturephotography #architecturalphotography #25yearsofsmallprojects #interiors #dailydecordose #realhomes #chicinteriors #interiormilk #designsponge #interiordesign #interiorphotography #ajsmallprojects #wales #snowdon #snowdonia #cottage #welshcottage #welsharchitecture #rural #ruralcottage #extension #corrugatedroofing
