I’m loving this new app called Core Combo. First, select an animal. Then, select an action. Next, watch the animal of your choice perform the action of your choice! From eating to dancing to sleeping to jumping, make your favorite animals act it all out and create as many combinations as you would like. This week, I used this app to model a ton of core vocabulary. I modeled core phrases and sentences, such as “press play,” “watch it,” “let’s look” and “make it + [action].” Check it out! 🦓🐒 🐅 #speechtherapy #speechandlanguage #slopbloggers #pediatricslp #slpsgodigital #parentcoaching #schoolslp #playtolearn #slpsfollowslps #slp2be #slpsofinstagram #instaslp #therapy #autismlove #specialeducation #speechideas #speechtherapyideas #corewords #technologytips #speakAACtoteachAAC #useAACtoteachAAC #ideasforkids #mindfulparenting #speechathome #earlyed #earlyintervention #parentingcoach #parentsupport #specialeducationparent

Friday fact- “NAEP consistently finds that about 35% of US 4th graders read a level that is below basic. So, in an average class of 24 4th graders, about 8-9 students cannot read at a basic level. Most are capable of learning to read at higher levels.” (International Dyslexia Association ). You can find more information on the IDA website. This information supports the need to provide early identification and intervention for students. #dyslexiaawareness #dyslexiaeducation #specialeducation #dyslexiaintervention #houstoneducation #fridayfact #learningdifferences #readingisfundamental #houstonheights

**sweary post** This week has been a total bag of bollocks. Back to school has not been a magic bullet for us, and as much as the stress of lockdown mearly drove me over the edge, I had somehow lost sight of just HOW stressful everything to do with school is for us. The week has consisted of school refusal, meltdowns and the impossible task of trying to meet the very different needs of two children at two different schools (on a good day Im doing an hour and forty minutes of school runs ). Plus trying to juggle numerous telephone calls, emails, meetings and appointments in between. I feel like I'm being pulled in about 10 different directions at once, my brain is melting from the complexity of it all and I'm fucking knackered. I want to be the mum posting about what a brilliant week my kids have had. I want to be the mum meeting up for coffee/going to yoga/sorting out the bloody house. Most importantly I want to be the mum who sees the happiness in her children's faces when they see their friends in the morning, and when they come out of school in the afternoon. Bollocks to it all. If your week has been shite, have a high five from me for making it through to friday ❤️ (post inspired by the very lovely @pdaparenting who has also had a crapper of a week, please check her out and give her a follow ).

It is a very common misconception that if you use signs with your baby, it will prevent them from developing verbal language. The opposite is actually true! ✅ Whenever you use signs with your baby 👶 , it is always recommended that you provide the verbal 👄 model along with the sign. So, when you are signing “more”, you will also say “more”. Remember, you are teaching them SIGNS, not SIGN LANGUAGE. Teaching and using signs with your child provides them with both a verbal and visual model which helps with comprehension 🙇‍♂️. Signing also gives a child a way to express themselves before they have the words to do so, which alleviates frustration 😡 for both the child and the parent! Have questions or want more information about this? Feel free to DM me! 📝 #speechpathology #slp #speechtherapy #speech #speechlanguagepathologist #slpsofinstagram #speechpathologist #earlyintervention #communication #therapy #specialeducation #teletherapy #language #education #momlife #parenting #parentinglife #babies #momsofinstagram #children #parentlife #motherhood #family #kids #toddler #baby #parentingtips #parents #languageopportunities

I let this happen for to long.. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ I shared that I left my brick and mortar classroom job with my home school district and changed gears to teach virtually at a public cyber charter school. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ It was one of the toughest decisions of my career because I literally loved my job but hated things outside of my classroom making to much of an impact on it. ⁣ ⁣ I hated it so much it was effecting what happened inside my classroom too.. never underestimate the importance of your mental health.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #mentalhealth #takecareofyou #teachersmentalhealth #iteachsped #iteachspedtoo #spedteacher #spedclassroom #specialeducation #weteachsped #teachloveautism #iteachautism #autismclassroom #autismteacher #teachersofig #teachers #teacherlife #teachersofthegram #teachersofinsta #tftpickme #teachersengaging #teachersofinstagram #teachersfollowteachers #iteachtoo #iteach #iteachmiddleschool

I used to love writing. With my intrepid imagination, I would write fictions, screen plays and journal. I can still remember some of those stories to these days. I used to live through them. I don’t know when it stopped. I don’t know if that’s part of growing up or my self-confidence took a shot and I didn’t want to face my bad grammar and lengthy sentences. I miss letting my imagination run wild. ✨✨✨ #dyslexia #dyslexiaawareness #dyslexic #dyslexiaeducation #education #dysgraphia #specialeducation #learningdisabilities #dyslexiaadvocate #dyslexiasupport #learningdifficulties #saydyslexia #specialneeds #dyscalculia #dyspraxia #neurodiversity #learningdisability #learning #dyslexiaisreal #reading #dyslexiapower #mentalhealth #empoweringdyslexia #writing

maybe because last week was a short week or maybe it's Mars in Retrograde but this week was plain funky. I try to wear real clothes twice a week, I didn't make it lol 4/5 days leggings. You know how some people have body dysmorphia? I definitely have Classroom Dysmorphia where I think everything is less put together or organized or successful as it really is. Thanks anxiety- if you have classroom dysmorphia too I just want to say you're doing a great job and Happy Friday!

My awesome principal purchased all staff a face guard. It is supposed to make wearing your mask more breathable, comfortable, and allow you to talk more clearly! I wore it for a little while today and it did the trick, plus I’m no longer tasting my mask when I talk! It even has a cute little heart on it🤍

I’m getting tons of messages from teachers thanking me for my file folder games and it just make my heart happy. Turns out, they’re perfect to send home with students on a hybrid school schedule. It gives them a screen-free activity to practice their skills at home. I never imagined they’d be needed in this way, but I’m just glad I’m able to help teachers out during this crazy school year! 💡 You can purchase this Addition Facts File Folder Game in my TPT store, or learn how to MAKE YOUR OWN in my latest blog post. I'll include links to both in my profile!

This is what I affectionately call the Dyslexia Trifecta! Children with Dyslexia CAN be successful in school and in life. They often have unique minds and talents I only wish I had! Despite their many strengths, these kids are often fighting anxiety and low self esteem when they perform poorly in school. Just think-if you had to get up and go to work EVERYDAY at a job you weren't naturally good at or attune to. That would be pretty defeating wouldn't it? Many children that even have diagnoses still aren't getting all 3 parts of the trifecta. ALL. THREE. ARE. CRUCIAL. You can give a child accommodations but if you don't address the DEFICITS, you aren't improving their skills and setting them up for success. You can can provide a child with a diagnosis-which is a great first step-but then what? The first step is the diagnosis-but it is certainly not the journey. These kids need EVIDENCED BASED INSTRUCTION from a TRAINED PROFESSIONAL. Did you hear me yell that? : ) When looking for services for your child, be sure that person is trained and has sought out additional education on how to work with these kids. Although it should be, this is not taught in typical undergraduate or even graduate programs so look for professionals who have this as a specialty area. After all, I love my primary care doctor but if I have a serious specific issue with my kidneys, I am going to go to a specialist. Time is SO precious for these kids and getting the specialized evidenced based intervention as soon as possible is key! #dyslexia #dyslexiaawareness #specialeducation #dyslexiadvocacy #speechtherapy #dyslexiaintervention #slp2be #speechlanguagepathologist #privatepracticeslp #earlyintervention #evidencedbasedintervention

Teaching kids to wait...not an easy task at times. One strategy I use is giving a wait card. You write the number of minutes the student needs to wait and then have them pick some choices they can do while they wait. I give them three different choices so they can switch between choices if they want to. I use an overall choice board they can pick from so they have lots of options to pick. For more strategies and my step-by-step process for teaching waiting skills use the link in my bio to listen to my latest podcast episode! #specialeducationteacher #specialeducation #spedteacher #iteachsped #weteachsped #teachersofig #elementaryteacher #teachersofinstagram #teachergram #iteach123 #classroomideas #teachertips #teacherprobs #teacherideas #specialeducationlife #classroomideas #iep #classroommanagement #behavioranalysis #autism #abatherapy #spedclassroom

Frequent breaks, structure & visuals are SO important during online learning. We have short breaks between each lesson to give students (and teachers ) time to take care of basic human needs, move their bodies, and take a few minutes away from screens. ⁣ ⁣ During breaks, we share this visual on our screens to give students ideas for break time choices.
