Dyslexia assessment in English and Spanish can be tricky. In Texas, dyslexia currently falls under Section 504 and it is considered a general education service (this can be confusing in our SPED world ). Texas publishes a Dyslexia handbook and the latest version from 2018 provided additional considerations for second language learners. A great resource from the handbook is a table comparing characteristics in English and Spanish. In the next week, I will be sharing some of my go to subtests. Out of curiosity, does anyone else complete dyslexia testing in their current setting? 🙋🏽‍♀️👩🏽‍💻💜 . . . #dyslexia #dyslexiaassessment #bilingualdyslexia #dyslexiatesting #dyslexiaeducation #dyslexiaawareness #dyslexiaeval #schoolpsychproblems #schoolpsychlife #schoolpsychologist #schoolpsychology #schoolpsych #schoolpsychologistofinstagram #educationalevaluation #psychoeducationalassessment #formalassessment #transparentvsopaque #bilingualassessment #bilingualschoolpsychologist #bilinguallssp #lsspbilingue #bilingualtesting #educationalpsychology #schoolevaluation #bilingualspecialeducation #sped #spedtesting

"𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮..."⁣ ⁣ As educators, we have so many great accommodations and modifications in our toolkits.⁣ ⁣ We accommodate and modify the curriculum and the environment, all day long. We could do it in our sleep no doubt.⁣ ⁣ But, if we stop there, 𝐢𝐟 𝐰𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞, 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦, 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝.⁣ ⁣ It’s important that we are continually reflecting and considering:⁣ ⁣ 1. What skill is the child missing? When you have the answer: Teach it, practice it, & reinforce it.⁣ ⁣ 2. Is this accommodation or modification still necessary? If no, fade it!⁣ ⁣ 3. Can we implement something less intrusive? Is the student ready for increased independence? How can we support that?⁣ ⁣ A great example, is access to noise cancelling headphones. The student may not like loud noises, the constant background noise, or perhaps when peers are upset. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦. ⁣ ⁣ We can’t remove all loud noises across their lifespan. So, 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦, 𝐰𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 (𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬, 𝐟𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐚 𝐟𝐞𝐰 ) 𝐬𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭!

[“EQUITY FILL UP”] It’s days like today that affirm my existence as a Black school psychologist! My friend and esteemed colleague, Dr. @nikole_h_s is a constant source of grace, dignity, and pose in doing THIS WORK, and she’s gracious enough to uplift those of us who are making “good trouble” for intersectional social Justice with her Friday “Equity Fill Up.” Well, today I got an early dose when she and @the_amirayasmeen dope ALL TYPES OF WISDOM on Equitable Practices in an MTSS Framework: Equitable Data-Based Decision-Making.” (Click the link in my bio if you want to learn how to do THIS WORK! ). . Well, if that wasn’t enough, I ended my day as a panelist for my alma mater, @millersvilleu with fellow alum @nikole_h_s and colleague Dr. Jason Pedersen for the inaugural webinar series by @saspmu . (Swipe to see the questions posed! ). We had such rich dialogue, and I was so encouraged by the level of engagement from our future school psychologists! Making connections with alumni and current students speaks to @villepresident ’s vision for mentorship and our EPIIC Values! I’m definitely proud to be a @villealumni ! 🌓🌓🌓. . Thank you to our other equity champions who showed their support throughout the day! 😘😘😘. . #equityinPAschools #equityineducation #beantiracist #antiracismeducation #antiracism #criticalracetheory #blackschoolpsychologist #schoolpsychologist #changeagent #blackscholarsmatter #naturalnerd #blackscholars #socialjusticeeducation #culturallyresponsiveclassroom #blackeducators #blackvoices #truthteller #speakonit #nameit #teachingtolerance #wellwateredwomen #intentionallife #liveintentionally #passionandpurpose #personalgrowthjourney #knowyourwhy #findyourpurpose #chiefchallenger #supportherhustle #professionalblackgirl

A number of the children I work with also work with a speech pathologist. Often we’re working towards similar goals and the work the speechie does compliments psychology interventions beautifully. Wondering why mental health is important for speech and language development? According to @findingyourvoice .therapy “Our brain learns new skills (like speech and language ) best when it is in a calm state and when we have healthy and strong relationships with people (e.g adults around us ).” In order to support children with mental health difficulties from a speechie perspective, speechies can “set functional goals so [the child] can aim to talk about their thoughts and feelings, make a friend, navigate social problems and build resilience. Goals that work towards improving their social emotional world”.

Today I got proof and solid data that my efforts in my health journey are paying off! I had a telehealth visit with my functional medicine doctor, and she was SUPER impressed and happy with my bloodwork. Last year, my general practitioner told me I was close to needing cholesterol medication....WHAT??? This year, my cholesterol was down by 74 points...DOUBLE WHAT????? The scale has been cooperating with me the past few weeks, and I’ve lost inches. Despite going back to work and my job being different in SO many ways from the past 20+ years, my mental health is in a good place. I have lots of tools in my tool box that are working for me! This pandemic has not been easy for any of us, but my tools are helping me to keep it together. I’m still a work in progress, but damn, I’m happy with my life! 😃 There are so many things I’d love to help you with! Name one area of your life that you’d like to improve! I’m listening....

It’s been one hell of a week! One thing that has remained clear is that exercise and activity just don’t help my physical health but they are a big part of my mental wellness and ability to cope. Everyone has Mental Health just as everyone has physical health. Sometimes our mental health is good and sometimes it could use some improvements - same as our physical health. Feelings of sadness, worry, anger and frustration are all normal responses to life’s events. Having those intense feelings doesn’t mean we have a mental illness but it may mean we have mental distress and we may benefit from talking with friends, family, or even a counsellor/therapist! Thank you to @deedeemorrisphotography for capturing some of the most amazing photos of me. I see myself through the eyes of others and I’m learning to love every piece 💕 #breakingstigma #skinnyingmama #workoutwithdeb #schoolpsychologist

Reposted from @thecounselingteacherbrandy The COVID-19 crisis has brought about new and uncharted emotional territories for the teens in our lives. . . Now, more than ever, we need to take the reins and teach our youth how to manage their emotions when the going gets tough. . . With our help, our teens can navigate this pandemic, and any other unexpected life changes that may surface in the future through the use of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL ). . . Want some tips? Check out my recent blog post in partnership with The Allstate Foundation. @allstatefdn I talk about two of my favorite SEL strategies for helping teens get through isolation and fear during the pandemic. Perfectionism was my identity. It’s the only way I knew how to describe who I wanted to be. It was what I kept seeking for so long. I needed my lessons to be perfect. I needed my classroom to be perfect. I needed my observations to be perfect. I needed to be perfect. Until I couldn’t be. Until I wasn’t sleeping. Wasn’t eating. Wasn’t living. Perfectionism was draining me of everything I was striving to be. Sometimes it held me back before I even tried. If I couldn’t be “the best”, I wasn’t going to try “my best” Because to me, “my best” was never good enough. And I see this mindset in students today too. And my message to students, is the same message I tell myself, still to this day. The best, does not exist. Being my best...now that is something I can do each and every day. I’m always 100% me, no matter what. And 100% ME, is the best version of me I can be! Do you see student’s struggling with being the best? What strategies do you use to initiate the conversation about changing the language from “the best” to “my best”?

#learning #education #school #student #schoolpsychologist #psychology

Comin’atcha’ with a #traumatiptuesday . About 1 in 5 children have inadequate nutritional and caloric intake recommended for their age . How does this relate to trauma? Hunger exacerbates trauma symptoms. . You ever realize your mood shift when you’re hungry? It’s harder to focus, make rational decisions, and regulate emotions when your’re hungry. . Hunger hurts children in multiple ways. 1 ) low food security leads to toxic stress 2 ) limited cognitive bandwidth-children spend their limited mental reserves on the basic needs they lack (FOOD ) 3 ) malnutrition leads to chronic health issues and, in the developing brain, learning, physical growth, information processing, and academic achievement are compromised. 4 ) chronic hunger is associated with anxiety and depression (and suicidality in adolescents ) . With all of that going on, it isn’t surprising that students with trauma have higher instances of ‘problematic’ behavior and lower academics across the board. . So, start with the basics. To make a child feel safe and secure in your space, provide a safe and secure space. Meet their basic needs. The MERE PRESENCE of food has shown to reduce anxiety-which means more brain power for learning 🧠. . . . . All information was provided by the CDC and American Psychological Association. . . #schoolpsychologist #schoolpsychology #schoolpsychlife #trauma #traumarecovery #traumainformed #traumahealing #traumainformedcare #traumainformedparenting #traumapsychology

Yesterday my son was playing with a uniquely shaped stick and it broke. The shape was no longer what he needed for the game he was playing. Cue deep and utter devastation. He went from being joyful to sobbing and dysregulated. Over a stick. Now I have chatted before that for us it is not always about the stick (see the blog ). But yesterday I was not in the mood to dig deeper. I helped him recover and then full on lectured him about crying. Like, a super long-winded lecture that included mentioning that other kids might get confused about why he gets so upset sometimes. I was on a roll. But then he stopped me and said: "But I thought you said it is OK to cry?" Oof. I mean, that really is the message I have tried to send him. That all feelings are OK. While I think there is a middle ground that I want to help him find, where it is OK to feel all the feelings, but not let the "little things" bring him down. I reflected on what was going on for me in that moment. I tried to tell myself that the lecture was for him, but in all honesty it was about me. I was tired and dealing with my own big feelings about life and him returning in person school. I wasn't in the mindset of "this is a safe feeling" and "I can handle this". It is not always easy to be that safe place, but it is an important process of teaching healthy coping strategies and promoting emotional regulation.

Before I married Lehi, I thought I was meant to be a Forensic Psychologist. I enrolled in a master’s program and about a month later, Lehi came back into my life. I had 2 options at this point. Option 1- to focus on my future as a possible wife + mother with a guy that lived out of state. Option 2- Focus on my career, and put off my chance at a family with the guy of my dreams. Which one did I choose? I chose a family. I chose Lehi. I chose God’s plan for me. He came into my life at the right time, but I could not “date” him if I worked full-time, was enrolled in a master’s program, and devoted the time that I needed to study. • Half way into my first semester I dropped out of the program. What was I thinking at the time? That I trusted God’s plan and would eventually find something better for ME! • A month after dating, we were engaged, and then married 6 months later. Once we were married, I knew that I could focus on my future career again. I looked and looked for careers. What was I supposed to do?! Well, I went back to what I originally knew + loved!! WORKING IN THE SCHOOLS WITH KIDS. • I applied to take the CBEST exam, and passed! After, I searched back onto my university’s website and applied for the School Psychology Program! Meanwhile, I switched job positions + became a substitute teacher to learn all angles of the field. • BOOM 💥 My life changed. I became a permanent high school substitute teacher, and began my master’s degree program. I have met amazing people along the way, and have had a supportive husband through EVERYTHING! The girl on the left quit a master’s program, and the girl on the right, found herself! • Some of us are searching, some of us are working toward something, and some of us are there! We ALL have our own journey! So, guess what I posted on the blog for you?!
