My week ended as it often does, with NPR’s “All Things Considered” and a decompressing run. Today’s segment featured the amazing Alicia Keys discussing her new Album, Alicia. She wrote the song, “Good Job” over a year ago. Long before we could even imagine the seismic shifts that have transpired. She thought of her loves and how so many of them work so hard, and as many of us do, and yet still question if they’re doing it right. “Good job” is something we don’t tell each other often enough. I wholeheartedly agree, Alicia Keys. We all need to tell ourselves and each other good job, regularly. In my work, rarely does an hour go by where someone doesn’t provide me with evidence of attention to growth and contribution. So many of us, work so fastidiously to do better. Do better for others and ourselves. And yet our brains often tell us to focus on what we’ve done poorly, what we could do better. Growth of course is always the direction of choice. Yet, momentum towards growth comes most readily with sources of light and inspiration. This is what a self-actualized 29 year old looks like 🎉🤓 I feel so blessed and humbled to be where I am in life. I have fought to be where I am, but that doesn't mean there weren't enormous systemic factors that benefited me immensely. I wanted to use my birthday to highlight and honor those who have been systematically excluded from the academic and scientific spaces by the same factors that have benefited me. @theresearchher has put together an incredible initiative to send Black women in graduate school to therapy for free. This is SUCH an important initiative because the psychological warfare that academia plays on BIPOC folks, especially BIPOC women and femmes, systematically pushes them out of these spaces. I am asking you all to help me raise $500 for this initiative! That will be 6 months of free therapy for at least three women. I believe we can do it! I have created the bingo card on my second slide and I will be updating it in my stories as donations come in. Empathy is actually a complex skill. Having empathy requires that we can see ourselves separate from someone else. It means that we can understand that other people have different thoughts and feelings. We also need to understand and recognise common feelings such as happy, sad, angry, scared in ourselves and others. Then on top of these we need to be able to imagine how a person may feel in different situation and have some insight in what to do to help. When we really think about it, that is a lot to know. There is some research that children begin to have understanding of people's feelings from the age of about 2 years of age. But the ability to put yourself in someone else's shoes in not fully developed till about 5 years of age. To be fulfilled in the present moment is much easier said than done. Oftentimes we set such high expectations and goals that we become lost in this race to achieve something bigger and better than ourselves. We lose sight of the beauty in the present moment when focused on this race to greatness and happiness.. a race without a finish line. The worst part is that if you’re unhappy or unfulfilled as is in the present moment, then nothing obtained in the future will give you that desired happiness/fulfillment. We commonly hear: “if I have [blank] then I’ll be happy” or “I’ll be a better person if I achieve [blank]” – the [blanks] can be filled with better careers, more money, family and friends, the perfect spouse, bigger house, a baby, the newest technology, diet, cars, recognition, etc.. What you’re actually doing here instead is focusing on how others will perceive you, or how your ego will perceive you, and not how you perceive yourself. Understand that anything that can be filled in the [blanks] aren’t YOU – when you die, none of that goes with you. So then, why do we give power to anything and everything other than ourselves? Put simply, we’ve been conditioned this way - to believe that happiness can come from external sources when in fact, true happiness can be found only from within – everything else is temporary. To be happy and fulfilled by your self in the present moment means that you can now set goals and entertain the items within the [blanks] without attachment to or identity with them. And if any [blanks] are taken from you, although you may feel sadness or anger, you will no longer be attached enough to experience suffering, and thus effortlessly let go. Cybersafety is so important for our teens. They are vulnerable to grooming, cyberbullying, gaming addiction and so much more because of their developmental stage and still developing brain and maturity. It is important for parents to know what they are doing online and to monitor their use. I do recommend that children and teens dont have a tv, gaming consoles, computers in their room as the most common thing I hear is that they secretly game late into the early morning without their caregivers knowing. Teens are smart ya'll, they find ways, even if you turn off the wifi! Here are some great questions to ask teens about their tech use by @gottmaninstitute .

Sometimes when we struggle with a part of our past- a relationship, experience, mistake, or problem- it can take over our thinking TODAY. We need to *solve* it. We need to GET why it happened. We need to identify our own blame. We need to do ANYTHING so it doesn’t happen again. We need to continue on a loop blaming ourselves to it can make some kind of sense why it happened. Know what I mean? “I was insecure and unmotivated which is why I stayed in that bad relationship.” But what we get to do is not tie our WORTH to those parts of our past. We get to acknowledge them, welcome them in, and then decide they won’t have power over us anymore. We get to let it be a part of our story, without *defining* our story. It’s one of the biggest gifts we can give ourselves. Happy Friday 🤍

I PASSED MY PSYCHOLOGY LICENSING BOARD EXAM!!!! These months of 5am mornings, studying every waking moment, and cramming a whole century’s worth of psychological material while working full time during a WHOLE pandemic... are over!!!! (Phew it’s been a long ride ), a Masters, Doctorate, 1,750 Post-Doc Hours, and finally my licensing exam... 9 years for this moment!!!!!!!! NINE!!!! I’m burning my stack of notecards as my goodbye ritual lol. 🔥 I’m so exhausted, I already took a 4-hour nap. CHILDDDD, I was DONE.
