We all bleed the same blood. As a black healthcare worker, I don’t choose who I will help. I don’t say “oh I won’t help him because he is a Trump supporter”, or “no I won’t work with him because he’s a white good ‘ol boy.” No, even if I had the option to, I would not deny anyone their right to physical therapy. I would not say ‘Oh that white man makes racist comments, so I’m going to let him lay in his hospital bed and just shrivel away, because no one else will get him out of the bed. We as healthcare providers should stand together and try to make a difference now. There are so many cultures at my hospital, that we really should try our best to make an end to social injustice. It’s up to everyone to do something! We must do something, because this could’ve been my brother, father, or my uncle. I could’ve easily been Breyonna Taylor, sitting at my home as the cops mistakenly showed up with a search warrant and killed me. I’ve been afraid to write my feelings on this page. I am a small business just starting out and I don’t want to lose followers/ potential customers but I feel that I have to express myself and speak on this matter that is happening almost every day. I have a child whom I want to grow up in a much better place. I don’t want her to be afraid of police. I don’t want her having to worry about her father. Her father who is a Veteran and who works hard, but is only seen as a threat because of the color of his skin. What will we do to make a change? This is me, the owner of Heroes Wears Scrubs.

Lift the ball up and down and imitate movements being shown with the ball 2. Play a fine motor game i.e. puzzle or matching whole prone over the ball 3. Sit, bounce and count 4. Steamrolling, deep pressure 5. Kick back and forth with an adult 6. Crawl while pushing the ball (adult makes the ball resistive ) 7. Bounce passing it back and forth 8. Sing the ABC or take turns saying one letter and the adult does the next letter back and forth working on memory too 9. Get Into a crab 🦀position on the floor and mom and child play crab soccer by kicking the ball back and forth only using legs and hands are weighbearing 10. Put words on the ball and gave child find them! . . How low can you go?🔃⁣ ⁣ Sometimes in outpatient you can be sitting at a computer or on a stool talking to a patient at eye level..⁣ Perhaps in pediatrics you can sit on the floor next to your kiddo and talk to them at eye level…⁣ But what about acute care?😃⁣ ⁣ 🛌Something I try to 𝘢𝘷𝘰𝘪𝘥 is talking down or over my patient. I am constantly squatting or bending down.⁣ I refuse to talk to them from the foot of the bed, I will not hover over them (unless the situation requires it for a few seconds ) & especially when they are sitting at the edge of the bed, I will squat down to meet them at eye level.⁣ ⁣ We are ℎ𝑢𝑚𝑎𝑛.👀⁣ If this pandemic taught me anything, it’s that patient connection is more important now than ever before. These patients are scared, they aren’t surrounded by their loved ones. How would you feel if you had medical professional #4795 of the day come hover over you talking jargon?⁣ ⁣ ❓Our 𝑏𝑜𝑑𝑦 𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑢𝑎𝑔𝑒 matters just as much as our words.⁣ Are we talking to the patient or over them, are we talking down or at them, are we meeting them where they are with their knowledge or are we just spitting out textbook verbiage, are you opening the floor for conversation for further understanding?⁣ ⁣ Being 𝗲𝘆𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 with someone opens doors because not only are you providing the patient with a friendlier approach, but you will also probably build a better rapport…⁣ & lets be real in the current day with masks, people will only get to know us by our eyes (mk sorry had to make a joke )⁣ ⁣ When you are dealing with patients in the future, I 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 you to be more aware of your body language, your mannerisms, your verbiage, and how you speak with each patient. 💥ACL - When to Run?💥 - 📚 Today's post is from the January 2019 issue of @physionetwork and highlights a study on "Criteria for Return to Running after Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Scoping Review", reviewed by Mick Hughes ( @mickhughes .physio ) - 💥Background/Objective: 🔘There is a lack of high-quality information regarding when ACLR (Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction ) patients can return to running (RTR ) 🔘The primary purpose was to find out what criteria are used in the clinical decision making for RTR following ACLR 🔘They also aimed to provide information to help clinicians and patients make quality decisions regarding RTR - 💥Methods: 🔘Reviewed 201 studies which included participants ranging from skeletally mature adolescents to those aged 40 years, who had undergone a primary ACLR (autograft only, with or without meniscus surgery ) - 💥Results: 🔘The median time from which RTR was permitted was 12 post-operative weeks 🔘Apart from "time after surgery", only 18% of the studies used additional criteria to allow patients to RTR 🔘The most common clinical criteria were full knee AROM and pain <2/10 in the visual analog scale (VAS ) 🔘For strength, the most common objective criteria were isometric quadriceps limb symmetry index (LSI ) >80% and isokinetic quadriceps and hamstrings LSI >70% 🔘For performance-based criteria, the most common objective tests were: proprioception LSI of 100%, composite score on Y-Balance Test >90%, hop test LSI >85%, 10x consecutive single leg squats to 45 degrees knee flexion and 30 step up and holds - 💥Clinical Implications: 🔘The decision to allow someone to start a running program should be made on passing clinical/strength/functional criteria, rather than being based on an arbitrary time-point 🔘It should be individualized and for many patients it might be reasonable to commence running between weeks 8-16 post-op provided that there has been adequate progressively loaded rehab 🔘The patient should have <2/10 pain, full to near full AROM, and little to no effusion 🔘The clinician may also choose to use a battery of strength and performance-based tests - ⁉️ Questions? A fascinating study that revealed our very limited capacity to detect the presence of shoulder pain based solely on information derived from the assessment of scapula kinematics. Yes, clinically, this information is accompanied by contextual and patient information, but this then leads us down the line of confirmation bias, as per a recent post and literature review of mine. In summary, visual observation of the scapula is littered with biases and inaccuracies. 💪

Happy Mindful Monday! Let’s bring mindfulness to your FACE today 😊 Why? Have you heard of the “Facial Feedback Hypothesis” before? I was first introduced to this topic back in first year psychology class. The idea is that your facial movements may influence your emotional experience and I thought whaaaaaat? You mean if I smile more I’ll feel even happier?! In a recent meta-analysis conducted by Coles, Larsen and Lench (2019 ), they combined results from 138 studies and found that facial feedback (i.e. smiling, frowning, etc. ) can influence emotional experiences (although effects were small and may vary for different reasons and depend on context ). Nonetheless, this is an interesting idea to be aware of and reminds us that the mind and body are truly inextricably linked! Tight and Stiff from sitting all day? . Whenever the body stays in a position for long periods, its natural tendency is the feet stiff. Think about when you wake up after you’ve been laying there for a long time - doesn’t your body feel stiff? . Likewise, whenever you sit at a desk for hours (and repeat this 5x/week for 8+ hours ) you will get stiff. Common stiff locations for people who sit all day are: neck, mid-back, low back, shoulders, hips (pretty much the whole damn body ) . So as your body continues to get stiffer and stiffer, your body will send you signals like *soreness* or *pain*. These signals are indicators that something needs to change - like you stretching to help decrease your stiffness! . So here are some stretches that you can do right at your very desk! The convenience of this is that you do not have to go on the floor or have any exercise equipment on you. . All you need for these stretches are a: -Desk -Chair -Wall . .
