Panic . Suddenly an otherworldly fear takes hold of you and you’re in the jaws of anxiety. Panic pounces on you like a tiger launching itself onto your chest. . You’re overcome by a sense of dread. Your heart races and you’re convinced that you’re about to die. This may last from a few seconds to hours. You’re suffering a panic 😱 attack. . In Europe 3 % of the population suffer panic attacks in a given year while 11% of Americans experience a panic attack. Panic attacks can either be triggered or occur unexpectedly. . What helps? . Counselling therapy or medication can help (and some forms of breathing training and muscle relaxation techniques ). . A panic attack is a response of the sympathetic nervous 😬 system (SNS ). Panic attacks are differentiated from other forms of anxiety by their sudden nature. . ‘Panic’ comes from the name of the Greek god Pan, who supposedly caused humans to flee in unreasoning fear. . Panic Symptoms: . Symptoms include: trembling, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, chest pain, hot/cold flashes, sweating, nausea, dizziness, sensations of choking or smothering etc. These symptoms are interpreted with alarm 🚨 and results in increased anxiety and forms a positive feedback loop. A combination of therapy and medication can help. It’s important to note that caffeine ☕️ may exacerbate panic anxiety. Some breathing exercises may also help as it helps to rebalance the oxygen and CO2 levels in the blood. . “Most specialists agree that a combination of cognitive and behavioural therapies are the best treatment for panic disorder”. . Going though all my old pictures and stumbled upon this one. One of my emotional break downs captured during a Photoshoot. I was very depressed at this time in my life. For a while I couldn’t look through all my old photos because it brought back so many terrible feelings and memory’s. Also a lot of self shame for letting my self get so deep into this world. Thankfully now I am out of this dark place. I am able to look at these photos and see a girl who was lost but is now found and stronger. I still struggle from time to time and am pretty open about this. ⁣ ⁣ Im usually very outgoing and happy. Yet still even to this day those irrational thoughts creep in causing nothing to make sense. Thankfully I have amazing relationships and as you all know I will be consistently seeing a therapist to continue on the positive path I am on now. I highly recommend this for any women or man who has been sexually assaulted.⁣ ⁣ Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Also called major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems.⁣ ⁣ Women are not the only ones who struggle with depression. Although women are more likely to talk. This needs to change. A big reason who Suicide rates are higher for men is because they don’t talk or seek help. A lot of this is due to the social norms that shame men showing emotion. Again this needs to change. ⁣ ⁣ It is a real issue that can happen to anyone and will require help. #beautifullydefected 🖤 When I got asked to be involved in this campaign, I could not have said yes faster. As you guys know, embracing and celebrating our scars, insecurities and 'defects' is something Im so passionate about. After my accident, I spent YEARS hiding my scars, changing what i wore, feeling a constant dread that someone would notice them and convincing myself they made me ugly. But i grew from those thoughts, and I slowly learnt how wrong I was. 5 years on and I couldnt be prouder of myself or happier in my own skin. Healing physically from a 3rd degree burn takes a long time, healing mentally takes longer. But Im healing. I started realising that I wasnt hiding my scars because I thought my scars were ugly. I was hiding them because of how I THOUGHT everyone else would percieve them, and thats not okay. Honestly now, I genuinely love my cute af scars and how they remind myself and everyone else just how strong dis lil gal is! 💪🏻👊🏻 Your scars shouldnt hold you back, they should empower us 🙌🏻 If you can resonate with this, please get involved in the campaign too! Not going to lie, these past few days has been tough. I lost motivation and desire to do anything. I couldn’t get myself to do work, or just read a book. When all the days start to blend together, you can really lose your sense of direction. What’s the point? I decided to notice what I was feeling and put a name on it. For me, it was ‘uncertainty’. It felt so good to say it out loud. I feel uncertain about the future. I’m sure we’re all feeling this right now. Allowing yourself to name the emotion and accepting it helps you figure out why you feel stuck, but also helps you move past it. COVID-19 is going to be here for a while and we won’t be able to fix it right away, but this too shall pass. For those of you who feel alone in this, it can be an awful feeling to go through but remember you’re not alone. Everyone will experience trauma at some point in their lives, and as a result, some will experience debilitating symptoms that interfere with daily life.⁣ ⁣ Untreated trauma is unlikely to disappear and can contribute to chronic pain, depression, drug and alcohol abuse and sleep problems that impede a person's ability to work and interact with others.⁣ ⁣ Many of these behaviors are ways to cope or manage the overwhelming feelings. Everything we do makes sense when you see it as an adaptation. ⁣ ⁣ Studies have shown that simply watching traumatic events on TV can be traumatic to some, especially those individuals who had pre-existing mental or physical health difficulties. ⁣ ⁣ At this very moment we are being bombarded with news about what is going on, but watching the news all day is not good for your mental and physical health. Limit how much information you are taking in so that you have time to digest it and integrate it. ⁣ ⁣ There are several definitions for trauma. One simple one is when our system gets overwhelmed due to an event.
