B A L A N C E . Balance is one of the most important gross motor skills we can master as it is the foundation to every skill we practice. From birth through to adulthood, we require balance to control our body movements for our physical development . . Examples of balance in our everyday lives; • Babies beginning to crawl (maintaining core balance & distributing weight between their arms and legs ) • Toddlers beginning to pull themselves up, stand and walk • Distribution of weight when we throw, hit or kick a ball (Cricket, Golf or Soccer ) • Riding on ride-along toys, bikes, scooters or skateboards • Jumping and landing (trampolines & playground games ) • Most Sporting skills involve balancing techniques (e.g. Gymnastics, surfing & kayaking ) • Sitting upright at a desk in the classroom . . If your child is having difficulty with balance they may be; • Falling over a lot • Intimidated by playground equipment like the swings/balance beams etc • Late developers reaching milestones like crawling, standing, walking • Lacking spatial awareness . . Simple ways to improve our balance; • Hopscotch - switching movement patterns helps your child get familiar with a shift in weight from one side of the body to another • Sitting on a ball - engages the core muscles to stabilise the body not to fall off (try using a big space hopper or a swiss ball to begin with and reduce the ball size as your child gets better at balancing on them ) • kneel down and throw and catch a ball • Walking around the edge of a rug - a simple balance beam that's not intimidating. Keep both feet on the edge, one foot in front of another • Riding bikes/scooters/skateboards - whatever your child's favourite toy to ride, is a great way to improve postural control • Uneven surfaces - we have used uneven surfaces a few times in our Ribbit & Roo activities for balancing and walking on (mountain climbers & balancing butterflies ) as using cushions/blankets/pillows etc helps our core work harder to stay balanced and upright

Today is national repeat day (I know where do these weird holidays come from??? ) It is where people do things they love to do over and over again! I think the day should be renamed to national dance class day because they are pretty much the same thing LOL! Another @chiquesport delivery today and I’m just in love with it 😍.. Gorgeous new Sports Top arrived just in time for me heading out for my daily run 🏃‍♀️...
