I help my clients fall in love with the process of getting stronger. I encourage them to listen to their bodies and move in ways that feel good. I help them find their own motivation in the positive effects of exercise that are completely detached from aesthetics/weight. We focus on making exercise habitual and long term. And as far as I was aware, most other trainers advocated exactly the same. Regardless of their ethos around weight loss I could see that most other trainers encouraged the love of the process and were happy to promote the other benefits of exercise. In lockdown, that seems to have changed. Suddenly, extrinsic motivation that exploits peoples insecurities is the way to do it again. “You could come out of lockdown in the best shape of your life, you need to make the choice and make it happen” “Use lockdown as an opportunity to start on that summer body” “Don’t use lockdown as an excuse to binge eat, take some responsibility for your actions” First of all, binge eating is a disorder. Disordered eating/eating disorders aren’t a case of taking some responsibility and stopping. That’s like telling someone with depression to snap out of it. It’s completely harmful and unhelpful. These disorders are rooted in years of exposure to diet culture in society. It takes huge amounts of the correct support, self care and positive motivation to even begin a process of healing. I don’t believe that any trainer saying these things at this time is a bad trainer. I have nothing but admiration and love for all in this industry. But in the desperation to stay relevant and acquire some income, people will revert back to what they know. It’s ingrained within us by society to see exercise as only a means to burn calories and reduce the fat we carry. The last thing our clients, or anyone else needs right now, is to feel pressured into looking differently. We need to be resourceful and supportive for the clients who still want to train at this time and we need to be resourceful and supportive for the clients who don’t. Exercise is a valid form of self care and if anything, this is what needs advocating loudly at this time.

PUNCHING THIS NEW WAY OF LIFE RIGHT IN THE FACE!! Keeping just one thing “normal” right now- my workouts, is just about keeping me sane! This lock down thing is hard! But not as hard for those on the front line so I’m trying to keep perspective. Anxiety is at an all time high - and this overwhelming feeling of the unknown, but for just 30 minutes a day I’m punching out the stress and focusing my mind on new moves and strength training. My biggest tip as a fitness professional right now is to just move your body- in any way that suits you- run, walk, cycle, squat, home workouts, virtual workouts, whatever can help you focus on something positive and uplifting. The programme I’m doing is a boxing and weights programme, 6 weeks long for 5 days a week, structured by the top fitness trainers in the world, based on fundamental training pillars for fast fat-burning: power, speed, and endurance. Is anyone else SO sore from our bodyweight workouts together?! . I wince when I laugh thanks to Monday’s ab workout. I can barely walk after yesterday’s booty workout. And I swear, it took me hours to recover after today’s cardio workout.. I lay on my mat until I realized I was late for a meeting 😂 . | MINDSET | — We can’t change the situation that we’re currently in because we’re already in it. Instead of focusing on the things we can’t control, let’s focus on what we can. That being : your mindset, your attitude, your perspective & what you CHOOSE to take away from the given situation. . I’m not trying to downplay any of it by any means, but what I AM saying is to try & focus on what you CAN control in an uncontrollable circumstance. . You can’t pick the cards life hands to you... BUT, I firmly believe that we all have full control on how we CHOOSE to utilize those cards that we’ve been dealt with. And to simply just make the best of it. After all, life is what you make of it, right? 😊 . So, what will you choose to focus on? We all have that choice. CHOOSE to focus more on the positive side of life, in every season. This little choice can make THE BIGGEST impact on your day to day living & it can also have a positive effect on the people around you too! Heck yeah!! 🙌🏼 . And that doesn’t mean to ignore the circumstance entirely. I just fully believe that circumstances can teach us A LOT & it can also be a HUGE contributer to major growth throughout our day to day lives. Just don’t make the negativity your primary focus. . I see this as a VERY valuable time for all of us to take advantage of towards self growth, self discovery & continued growth in EVERY area of our individual lives! This is such a beautiful time! ♥️ . Which brings me to my last & final point. Nats prep is out, the build is in. My most highly prioritised goal over the past 3.5 years has been to increase my squat, bench and deadlift numbers. Along the way I’ve definitely built muscle - my happy weight is about 2.5-3kg heavier than it was when I started powerlifting - but building muscle was always secondary to getting better at SBD. These current strange circumstances have afforded me the ability to focus more on hypertrophy, though, so I’m taking advantage of that. I’ve got equipment at my disposal, a big appetite and a coach who has written me a program tailored to my goal. The main aim is to increase size through my lower body. Weight is at 58.8kg, calories at 2400 (140g protein ), I will be tracking weight daily and measurements weekly to assess potential calorie changes. Leggings and track pants are going to be my best friend. LFG! #operationbustoutofmyjeans
