July wasn’t a good month. I spent too much, didn’t follow my budget, only made minimum payments & didn’t stash cash away like I needed to. Honestly, this pay cut from travel nursing to staff is messing with my mind & motivation. I just feel like all the goals & dreams have been pushed so far off into the future that I’ve sort of lost hope. Instead of 18 months to debt freedom, I’m looking at 3 years. Instead of 2 years until I could buy a home, I’m looking at 4-5. (I’m already 33, I want a home sooner than later ). Ranting about it here makes it seem like a small speed bump, but mentally & emotionally it feels like such a big setback. I have a lead on a side gig that would make up the difference in pay, but it’ll also kill me with hours. (Two full time jobs?! ) I’ve seriously been entertaining the idea of going back to travel nursing, even with the uncertainty of the economy. But I’m trying to listen to my real life friends & wait it out. Battling depression & anxiety makes me have some bad habits, I need to see what the stability does for me mentally, emotionally & spiritually. Because ultimately my mental health is more important than extra money. Friday I received my last travel paycheck & I’m just feeling discouraged. August & September I’m hoping for much better months as I settle into my new normal. #dfc #debtfreecommunity #debtfreejourney #tinyshovel #budgeting

The hubs has golfed a lot this summer. We plan to make a new sinking fund just for golf for 2021. He wants to be able to get a new set of clubs and budget for golfing at least once a week through the summer. I am so thankful that he is willing to save up the money for this for next year. Budgeting was a completely new concept to him when we got married. He would not even sit down and look at the budgeting book! He still gets a little anxious talking about the budget but he understands how important it is to have a plan. I never want him to feel he can’t have or do the fun things in life. My goal is for him to see how the budget isn’t restrictive but actually allows us to be able to do things and plan for them. Is your spouse the “nerd” or the “free spirit”? How do you help them get on board with budget planning as a team? * * #debtfreecommunity #debtfree #babystep3 #daveramsey #tbmfamily #dfc #sinkingfunds #cashenvelopes #cashenvelopesystem #budget #budgeting #budgetplanning #budgettips #budgettip #budgetlife #budgetbypaycheck #goodsteward #Godismyprovider #apostolicpentecostal #apostolic #pentecostal

This was something I actually struggled with when it came time to decide to hire a photographer and pay for it. I get guilty spending money...even when it serves a purpose. I look for deals and use friends and don't just go for the first quote I see but even then I struggle. 💬 How do you feel about the cost of things such as photography? Did you do maternity or newborn photos with your children? Why or why not?

Eliminate the STIGMA surrounding Frugality! 🙅‍♂️⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here are a few myths surrounding the frugal lifestyle:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❌ I can't buy anything I want⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❌ Being frugal means eating only rice and beans⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❌ It's way too much work and you don't save much⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❌ You have to coupon for groceries⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❌ I don't want to be labeled as cheap⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What many people don't understand is that living a frugal lifestyle is simply prioritizing your money towards things you value and cutting out the rest. 🙌⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It's about finding the right balance financially so you don't buy everything that you want. You're focused on buying what you need and a few things that you want. You also have less "stuff", which leads to more experiences doing the activities you value! 💪⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 👉Have you embraced the frugal lifestyle?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you enjoyed this, please make sure to LIKE ❤ and FOLLOW!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ --------------------------------⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📚 Are you on your debt-free journey? You should keep your emergency fund anywhere safe that doesn’t tempt you to withdraw or spend it, and is also easily accessible. Listen to Episode 29 of @findyourfreedom_podcast (link in bio ) for more information on Emergency Funds. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Although it’s good to keep your emergency fund in a place where it’s easily accessible, it may not be the best idea to keep all of it in cash at home. If you want a portion of it in cash for emergencies, put it in a fireproof safe.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’d recommend saving your emergency fund in an online savings account. Online savings account providers, such as Ally Bank, don’t have physical bank locations. Because of this reduced overhead cost, since they don’t have to pay for tellers or rent or electricity, they can offer much higher interest rates on savings accounts. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It is not a good idea to invest your emergency fund. Investment accounts are a bad place to keep emergency funds because there is a chance you could lose a significant portion, or all, of the saved money depending on the market. Additionally, there is a waiting period to withdraw the money, and you may not have that time during an emergency.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Similarly, you don’t want to keep your emergency fund in a CD because you receive a higher interest rate in return for keeping your money in the CD for a predetermined amount of time. This limits the accessibility of your emergency fund, which could make it useless in a time of emergency.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Listen to Episode 29 (link in bio 👉 @findyourfreedom_podcast ) for more advice about emergency funds!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Where do you keep your emergency fund? ❗️It always seems to be implied that there is a "millennial vs boomer" divide, and that millennials are the ones out partying when the truth of the matter is that majority of Millennials report having more concerns of their loved ones in their home becoming sick. For us older Millennials, this is our second time in a major financial crisis (see 2008 ), and show more concern for parents not taking the safety protocols seriously. In one report, 47% of Millennials actually cut back on spending due to the pandemic. The sad thing is that Millennials are taking the brunt of the blame accusations of not taking the pandemic seriously, yet surveys show our generation is taking it more seriously than older adults and generation Zs. As one reporter for the National Review stated: "Millennials are not out partying. We and our anxiety issues are holed up working from home, watching Hulu, and yelling at our parents not to go outside...". Granted, each generation has their level of stress and anxiety related to their health and finances during this time. ❓What generation are you from? Has the pandemic affected your perspective or frequency of spending? . . . 💭 COMMENT ❤️ LIKE 👐🏼 SHARE and TAG a friend that needs to see this! 👉🏼 FOLLOW @behavior .budget for financial inspiration and how I use ABA strategies to budget my journey towards home-buying and a wealthy lifestyle. ——— *Disclaimer: I am not a money, finance, accounting, or economics expert. Hey everyone! I’m working on a personal branding course as part of my career development, and it donned on me that I need to clarify the way in which this account has evolved over the years. It started as my personal account and will remain that way. I intend to share my real life here, and I am not trying to be an influencer or turn a profit off this page. I don’t have any products to sell you; my focus is just sharing my journey which happens to be focused heavily on finances. So, here’s where I see my life and therefore this account: “My” journey is now “our” journey. I’m engaged, so my goals have shifted towards sustaining our life together through periods of growth and hardship. Who I am: I’m just a completely normal person who grew to understand finances through necessity. I don’t have any special family history or any fancy job. I bring home an amount slightly above the American national household salary. I work in tech, but I’m not an engineer. The man I’m engaged to is similar. We just have average jobs and are “self-made” with some privileges. We both make similar salaries and have similar student loan debt. My personal beliefs are integral to my journey. Our long-term goals are social equity-minded. More about this later—it’s too early to talk about. But generally, I consider myself to be pretty progressive and am passionate about social equity and advocacy. Additionally, we love to rescue animals, and we plan to increase our ability to do so in the future. Our goals can be summed up in three steps, and these steps are what this account is focused on covering: 1. Become debt free ASAP 2. Save a ton of money: full emergency fund, property down payment, business start up costs, and X number of years of expenses (still deciding on that number ). 3. Buy a farm in a LCOL area. Matt will “retire” to run the farm. I’ll continue to work remotely in tech until the business grows large enough where I can also “retire” and help run the business. So that’s me and my journey! I hope to see you stay for the ride!

Yep. I said it. I am a financial planner & I have a car loan. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My husband and I used to be a one car kind of family. We always chose to live close to the city so we could use public transport and walk/ride. However, after having baby 1 and having to do child care pick up I can assure you that getting on a train with a kid during peak hour is not fun. The judgement that your kid is crying or the pram is taking up too much room is real. Let alone three times I was rejected from getting on the bus because of the pram and lack of space. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After my first baby, I ended up buying a second hand for $4k. I’ve had many second hand cars in my life & I’ve had some real lemons! (Even with my dad helping me pick the car as a mechanic by trade! ). I drove this car into the ground. It wasn’t roadworthy. It was going to cost more to fix it than it was worth to sell it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Last year when I knew I was expecting a second baby, we decided to get a demo car. We had the money saved up & sitting in our home loan offset account. My husband has worked for an ASX listed car dealership before in the office so he knows the tricks of the trade. We picked a car & we tried to get a cheaper price for paying cash but they wouldn’t go lower. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The finance offering was 0.8% for a Kia & there was an establishment fee & a maintenance fee. When I ran the numbers it ended up being that the interest on the car loan was LESS than our home loan interest rate so we would actually be worse off taking the money from the offset account. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As a financial planner I am not completely against car loans. I have reasons that I find acceptable to have them and I also have rules around them too. The car I bought was $27k. It was the cheapest car to meet my criteria. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So, as always, the moral of the story is to drive in your own lane- literally! Not everything in the personal finance world is black & white.

Ok! Step one is ✅ done. I have a monthly budget set for building my capsule closet along with a good list of items I’d like to get started. . Best advice I’ve gotten so far is to build a closet according to my lifestyle, makes sense, but I don’t think I would have approached it that way initially. Now my list includes nice active wear items along with casual pieces since I am a mom on the go, verse a nice blazer and heels. . I cant wait start building my minimalist closet with pieces I adore. I am almost positive it will be filled with classic staples similar to what I am wearing in this photo. . Denim Black Hats . 🤔How much should your monthly grocery spending be? Well, there are so many factors that it’s difficult to put out a number. One thing I do know is that the tighter your situation is, the tighter your grocery budget needs to be. If you are struggling to make ends meet, or simply desperate to crawl out of debt ASAP, make it a tight budget. Something like $125-$150/mo per person in an average cost of living area seems to be reasonable. If you live in a higher cost of living area, have huge eaters, or simply don’t want to be strict because you make enough money to spend on groceries and still pay off debt and reach your money goals, well then, spend whatever you want!!! The point of your grocery budget is not to limit you, it’s to help you create extra money in your budget to throw toward DEBT and SAVINGS and make those BIG goals happen!!! It won’t happen without sacrifice, but you are the one that ultimately decides what number is right for your family and your lifestyle. Not me, you! The most important thing is that you can *afford* what you are spending. We budget $800/mo for our family of 5 and enjoy a little more freedom with our food budget than we used to. We have a small restaurant budget too. It works for us! What questions do you have about grocery budgets?? Let’s chat and get this expense under control!🥗🛒

Financial freedom is real but it's also kinda weird too. It's strange because for years while we were climbing our way out of debt and saving all we could we made so many sacrifices. And so many folks in our real life thought we were hard up or broke or "on your ______" as one friend so kindly told us. 😳 But then as soon as we paid off the house everyone believed we had become millionaires over night! They started making comments on how we were "money bags" and they started thinking that Pat suddenly started earning six figures a year....uh no. He in fact only makes a little more than $2,000 a year more than what he made while we were on the debt-free journey. It's crazy to me how we see folks who are working hard to achieve financial freedom as broke or struggling but then the moment they achieve that freedom they were fighting for we seem to get upset that we "can't have that". Friend, I'm here to tell you that if two kids from divorced blue collar families can do it so can you. Yes, sacrifices suck but so does having your debit card declined. Achieving financial freedom isn't glamorous but its 1000% worth it. . . . 📸 credit @christinemariephoto . . . . #reallifeonabudget #debtfreecommunity #livedebtfree #livingthatbudgetlife #goaldigger #daveramsey #debtfree #woodstockga #happiness #debtfreemom #budgetmama #familyoffive #budgeting #dfc #dfj #millennialmom #millennialmoney #mortgagefree #babystep7 #debtfreegoals

August goals! ⠀ I set goals for this month finally. This is the first month in a long time that I’ve sat down and really thought about what I’d like to accomplish. These are goals that are going to help me set healthy habits, and make strides in my financial journey. ⠀ Goals: 1. @thebudgetmom said she would sit and budget for 15 minutes a day. This is how she developed a healthy habit and made sure budgeting was done regularly. I am going to do this so that I can keep up with my budget. ⠀ 2. I have been horrible about writing my expenses down. Normally I wait till the middle/end of the month, and it takes me forever to catch up. I want to break this habit. ⠀ 3. In July I didn’t participate in the TBM savings challenge. These challenges are fun and an easy way to ensure money is saved. I will make sure to participate in August. My envelope is printed and ready! ⠀ 4. I spend 8 hours on average on my phone. Disgusting, I know. However, quarantine has made it really easy to just sit on our phones. I want to break this habit. I know I wrote 4 hours, but I changed it to 6 hours. 4 will probably be September if 6 hours goes well in August! ⠀ 5. I have been eating out way more than I like. This month I want to keep it under 4 times. It’s my dads birthday, first day of school, etc this month so I’m sure we will eat out 1 or 2 times. Under 4 will be ideal. ⠀ I’m really hoping I can do well and stick to my goals, so I can start establishing better habits. ⠀ Have you set your August goals yet?

Our daughters sinking fund ⠀ The other day we went to Michaels and our daughter saw this savings picture frame. She decided she wanted it so she can start a new sinking fund for a car. They grow up so fast! ⠀ We have a car named Coco and we decided to “sell” it to her when she’s old enough to drive. I say “sell” bc that money is going back into a savings we have built for her (but she doesn’t know that lol ). Our daughter has her $1000 emergency fund already. She saved money from babysitting. So we have confidence she will save enough for her car. ⠀ Anywho, we went over the basics of maintaining a car, the cost of gas, tickets, etc. We plan to pay for everything except for her gas and maintenance. She will be in charge of that part. We believe that when your teens have skin in the game they care for their things a lot more. Some people may not agree w our method, but we feel this is a great opportunity to learn responsibility. ⠀ How are you handing teens and cars? Did your parents give you a car when you were a teen? Would love to know. ⠀

Learning about money is a tool that you cannot replicate because it arms you with the knowledge you need to help better our system. ⁣ ⁣ Thankfully, there are so many financial lovers, like you and I, who genuinely understand that not everyone has it easy and that it's not fair to shame others for how they manage their money.⁣ ⁣ @gabyroad is one of them, and I'm such a fan of her podcast, #badwithmoney ! 10/10 recommend.

If you’ve been following my Instagram for awhile, you know I’ve only been talking about 💰 for the past several months. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Until recently, my Instagram was photos of my travels — posted at random and inconsistently — and wayyyy more often when I was traveling. ✈️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Then I was laid off and took the opportunity to travel for about five months in Peru, Australia and Indonesia. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I only started talking about money on Instagram (and in real life! ) when I got back 🏡 in March because I kept getting the same question again and again: “how do you afford to travel so much?” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s been a weird experience deciding to use my Instagram to talk about #budgeting , #saving and #investing so we can all travel more right as the entire world shut down to travel. 🤪 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But I guess we’re all pivoting right now. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Annnnnd getting to the core of what matters most to us. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Travel was never really about travel for me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It was about broadening my perspective, freedom, trying new things — all things that are possible to do closer to home. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Last week a friend and I took a (socially distanced ) roadtrip 🛣🚗 up to Maine with stops in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New Hampshire along the way. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It felt great to travel again. It was a trip I might not have taken if not for Covid — avoiding crowds in favor of hiking 🥾⛰ in #acadianationalpark . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Have you made a #vacation or #staycation out of any local destinations lately? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It looks like travel may be on pause for quite awhile, so roadtrip 🚘and staycation suggestions are welcome! 👇 . . . #pivot #newperspective #newperspectives #travelislife #livetotravel #lifeisahighway #nationalparks #nationalparksus #sociallydistanced #sociallydistancedfun #travelsafe #safetravel #covidtravel
