✨It’s FIBROID AWARENESS MONTH!!✨ Nutrition is so important when it comes to your health and living your best life. Food is definitely medicine! 🌿As Hippocrates said: “Let thy food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” With that being said, I just wanted to re-inscribe how critical diet is for fibroid patients. ‼️REMEMBER TO INDULGE in: ✅Whole Grains: quinoa, oats, brown rice, wild rice, millet, rye ✅Lots of fruits and vegetables: berries, apples, TOMATOES (high in lycopene which has been shown to decrease the size of uterine fibroids ), brassica vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, Brussel sprouts, kale, cauliflower ) leafy greens, carrots🍎🍓🍐🍒🥬🥦🥕🍅🍅🍅🍅 ✅Non-GMO SOY PRODUCTS‼️ ✅Legumes: beans, peas, chickpeas, lentils🧆 ✅Iron rich foods: lentils🥗🍤🥙 ✅FLAXSEED‼️ ✅GREEN TEA(can replace that coffee for those caffeine addicts👀 )🍵 ❌🚫AVOID🚫❌: 🚫RED MEAT 🚫REFINED SUGAR 🚫SATURATED FATS 🚫PROCESSED and REFINED GRAINS: breads, muffins, crackers🥖 🚫ALCOHOL🥂 🚫PLASTIC PRODUCTS(use glass containers ) In my research I came across this blog, The Uterine Fibroid Diet by naturopathic doctor, Dr. Lisa Watson. Check it out. 👸🏾👩🏾‍⚕️🌱🩺 This is *NOT MEDICAL ADVICE* *NOT MEDICAL ADVICE* *NOT MEDICAL ADVICE* #itsjustnatural #naturopathicmedicine #painmanagement #blackgirlwhitecoat #reseaudocteur #whitecoatsblackdoctors #whatadoctorlookslike #stemgirls #howarduniversityalumni #howarduniversity #publichealth #whitecoatsforblacklives #whitecoatblackdoctor #blackdoctorsmatter #blackdoctorswhitecoats #girldoc #girldoctor #doctortribe #melanindoc #blackdoctorsmatter #blacknaturopathsmatter #womendoctors #whatsupdoc #NDsofColor

✨It’s FIBROID AWARENESS MONTH!!✨ 💙Isn’t it pretty?!💙Can you guess what it is? This is Linum usitatissimum or better known as Flax. The part of the plant usually used is….you guessed it: the seed. THIS IS FLAXSEED! I mentioned it in my prior posts as a great herb to add to your diet due to it containing lignans, making it a phytoestrogen. Phytoestrogens balance estrogen by weakly binding to estrogen receptors. Adding ground flax seeds to your diet can help control estrogen levels for estrogen dominant conditions such as UTERINE FIBROIDS!!! But also,PMS, menorrhagia, endometriosis, secondary amenorrhea, PCOS, oligomenorrhea and hot flashes. It has even been shown to ⬆️increase the progesterone to estrogen ratio. REMEMBER WE ARE LOOKING FOR HORMONAL BALANCE!!! ‼️‼️FYI: it’s also CRITICAL to drink enough water when consuming flaxseed. You should already be drinking approximately half your body weight in water so a little more than that would be beneficial. This is because if not it can cause a bowel obstruction.‼️‼️ 👸🏾👩🏾‍⚕️🌱🩺 This is *NOT MEDICAL ADVICE* *NOT MEDICAL ADVICE* *NOT MEDICAL ADVICE* #itsjustnatural #naturopathicmedicine #painmanagement #blackgirlwhitecoat #reseaudocteur #whitecoatsblackdoctors #whatadoctorlookslike #stemgirls #howarduniversityalumni #howarduniversity #publichealth #whitecoatsforblacklives #whitecoatblackdoctor #blackdoctorsmatter #blackdoctorswhitecoats #girldoc #girldoctor #doctortribe #melanindoc #blackdoctorsmatter #blacknaturopathsmatter #womendoctors #whatsupdoc #NDsofColor

Despite what the Prof. Lawrence Meads or Dr. Norman Wangs of the world may think... ⠀ We black and latinx professionals, earned our seats at the table. 🗣🗣 ⠀ Despite the micro and macro-aggressions, the negative opinions, and frankly overt racism and countless obstacles....we excelled. ⠀ Just imagine being taught by any of these two people? News flash many times we have....Do you think they cared to help or offer support when a black or latinx student or trainee reached out? Imagine having your professional fate in their hands? News flash many times we do....Do you think they were really impartial in their assessments regarding your professional advancement? ⠀ Despite people like them having the beliefs that they do....we rise anyways. We will continue to break down the barriers and represent. These disgusting write ups veiled as research and published in so called “peer reviewed” journals only make abundantly clear...our presence is needed. ⠀ So have your seat..and shake the tables! ⠀ ⠀ #medracism #youearnedyourspot #JAHA #society #youngblackprofessionals #younglatinxprofessionals #doctors #lawyers #engineers #nurses #dentists #pharmacists #businessschool #dentists #blackgirlwhitecoat #medicine #anesthesiologist #physician #mentor #docsofinstagram #amplifyblackvoices #amplifylatinxvoices #womeninmedicine

#swipe When studying for the DAT, we tend to compare our practice scores with people’s actual scores. Because of this, I don’t like talking about my DAT scores because I know that feeling all too well. & trust me, nobody was telling me what their practice scores were 😂 At the end of the day, we’re all getting into dental school because we put in that work and kept our heads down!! ⁣ ⁣ With that being said, one score I’m particularly proud of was my reading comp because I scored in the 98th percentile, so I wanted to share some tips with y’all :- ) ⁣ ⁣ Disclaimer: I’ve always loved to read. I truly believe that my love for books has helped my reading comprehension ability. My first tip is to get your hands on a good book and 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 read it. Ask yourself questions, look up definitions, use context clues to understand the author’s message. Over time, I was able to apply this skill to other areas of my life. It’s literally learning to read the room y’all 😂😂⁣ As for technique, I tried switching up my style & gauging which was more time effective & digestible for me ⁣ Honestly, I’ve learned this skill isn’t just for the DAT. It’s a skill we all need to have in the healthcare field because we’ll be thrown information all day, and we need the discernment to decide what we take & what we really could do without. Happy studying bosses 💫⁣

✨ It’s FIBROID AWARENESS MONTH!!✨ Leiomyomas or uterine fibroids are benign tumors of the uterus. They are estrogen responsive so grow rapidly during pregnancy but regress after menopause. Things to consider for fibroids: ✨Goal: decrease circulating estrogen because fibroids are a result of estrogen dominance. This could be an exposure to certain environmental toxins such as pesticides and even plastic containers such as you eat and drink from as well as foods such as farm raised animals and dairy.✨ •Try a whole foods diet, include fish and meat without hormones, brown rice, oats, millet, and rye •Increase soy (which has an antiestorgoen effect in the uterus ) and ground flaxseed •Stay away from refined sugars, caffeine, fried foods, alcohol and salt •Castor oil packs to liver and pelvis •Use herbs that have a primary action of phytoestrogen such as fennel and flaxseed because those balance estrogen by weakly binding to estrogen receptors. •Support the liver with cholorectics and cholagogues, which increase the production of bile by hepatocytes and increase the flow of big from the liver and gall bladder, respectively. Herbs with these actions include Culver’s Root, Gentian root, burdock root, dandelion root, and Curly dock root. •The Turska formula: a common used herbal tincture formula used to try to shrink uterine fibroids. It contains aconite, gelsemium, phytolacca, and bryonia. These herbs are TOXIC if used incorrectly. •If you or someone you knows suffers from fibroids, these are just a few things to think about. Talk to your health care practitioner to see what works for you. ...one year ago today, Coco Chanel and I completed our move from Arkansas to California (both requiring benadryl on the trip...sigh ). I prayed so hard for guidance on steps during and after residency. I prayed for a lot of things. We both landed wide-eyed and bushy-tailed, in love with Cali and so ready for this new adventure. ✨It’s FIBROID AWARENESS MONTH!!✨ With that being said, I think it’s critical we discuss the disproportionate way leiomyomas affect Black women. Compared to white women, Black women are about 3 times more likely to develop fibroids, have an earlier age of onset (late 20s rather than their average 30s ) with more severe pelvic pain and anemia symptoms and have them larger in size and number. Although the causal relationship of this disparity is not definitively known, research has provided evidence that support biologic differences between Black and white women, including differences in predisposition genes and environmental exposures such as vitamin D deficiency. Furthermore, due to their higher likelihood of developing these benign tumors at a younger age, it is more likely to have an impact on their childbearing plans. It is is also imperative to mention that Black women are more likely to experience symptoms longer before seeking treatment and have more concerns regarding the complications and consequences of treatment options when they do. Not to mention that they will face obstacles to receive valid information on treatment risks and benefits from a variety of sources. As a result, education is a critical aspect of treatment on both the part of the practitioner and patient. Practitioners must not only be educated about conventional treatments but also alternative, preventative methods. Cultural competency is also vital in choosing the proper therapy and treatment protocols for these women, as it plays a role in their decision making, compliance, and participation.👩🏾‍⚕️🌱🩺 *NOT MEDICAL ADVICE* #itsjustnatural #naturopathicmedicine #painmanagement #blackgirlwhitecoat #reseaudocteur #whitecoatsblackdoctors #whatadoctorlookslike #stemgirls #howarduniversityalumni #howarduniversity #publichealth #whitecoatsforblacklives #whitecoatblackdoctor #blackdoctorsmatter #blackdoctorswhitecoats #girldoc #girldoctor #doctortribe #melanindoc #blackdoctorsmatter #blacknaturopathsmatter #womendoctors #whatsupdoc #NDsOfColor

I have officially ONE WEEK before I begin MD2 😭🤯 We received our schedule over the weekend (as seen on the laptop...yes, it does look like a lot ) so I got to work color coding my schedule, and setting up the folders that will hold my notes this year on @notabilityapp (not an ad or anything, I just love what I can do with their app lol—peep how my note colors match my schedule colors! 😬 ). I’m actually excited to get back into having a real routine again, learning new things again, and getting to use my new planner. Plus it’s so exciting to not be the “new kid on the block” anymore—I have a whole year of experience under my belt!! 💪🏾 • • • At the same time....this whole virtual situation...sucks, to be honest. I’m glad I now have a dedicated study space (my dining table ) in my new apartment, but I want to see my friends and study group, I want to spend hours grinding in the library, hell I want to be in class with my professors! It’s hard to be excited when this year is going to start out nothing like I imagined. I’m trying to keep my head up, though, and hang on to the excitement about starting a new year. Here’s where my optimism will come in handy 😅 • • • How are you all coping with things still looking different than we imagined they would? Good luck to all the students starting a new school year! 🙌🏾 • • • #organization #studytime #MD2loading #studentdoctor #futuredoctor #blackgirlmagic #blackgirlwhitecoat #blackdoctorsmatter #blackdoctors #melanatedmed #womeninmedicine #inspiration #education #faith #meanttobe #believeinyourself #destinedformedicine

Just drowning in lessons and laundry 🧺 Only 2 weeks away from block one exam week 😥 and I’m already starting to feel the crunch. Planning my days and keeping up with all the material are the two toughest challenges currently. What’s been working for me: ✅Planning/writing out what must get done to ensure those are always my top priority. ✅Making a list of my flexible to-do’s and tackling those with whatever time is left. ✅Leaving time to unwind each day If you’ve got any productivity tips, please share below!

As of today, I am ~officially~ an MS2 🥳 ⁣ ⁣ I honestly can’t believe that I’m already 1/4th of the way done with medical school. The last eight weeks of “summer” have been *a lot* to say the least — from living simultaneously through a pandemic and a civil rights movement to changing my research project several times and moving across the country (again ). I’m thankful for the friends and classmates who held me down & fought the good fight with me (s/o to my SNMA family❤️ ). ⁣ ⁣ Aside from studying for ST*P 1, I have no idea what my second year holds for me but I’m very excited, mildly terrified, and forever grateful that God has given me the opportunity to grow into the physician I’ve always aspired to be. Here’s to 22 year old me living out 5 year old me’s dream 💫⁣ ⁣ Stay tuned for my blog post reflecting on my first year of medical school (link in bio )!

I just completed my first medical school exam today and....I actually feel fine! 😅 No really, I feel I covered as much material as I can even though there were questions I didn’t know 🥴. There were 97 questions on the exam....and all I know is a 70 is a pass 🤷🏾‍♀️ 😂 However, I did not want a repeat of undergrad freshman year. Back then, I hesitated to ask for help and thought if I read the textbook, then I was good. Nah! This time around, I reached out to other classmates to study with and asked my mentor @b_legendaly for advice. Now, if I failed 👀😂, then I can bounce back! If I passed, then I should be good 💪🏾 I know God got me either way. So now I’ll just rest. . . . . . . . . . #medicalstudent #medstudent #medicalschool #blackexcellence #doctor #medicine #minorities #snma #blackgirlwhitecoat #bgwc #melanindoc #diversifymedicine #representationmatters #whitecoatsforblacklives #reseaudocteur #premed #premedicine #futuredoctor

Just dropping some beautiful black girl magic pon your screens this Monday morning, as a reminder to keep pushing cos YOU got this! We've all had our different paths to this medicine of a thing: not one of my classmates/friends have had the same journey. Some had it much easier, others much worse, but guess what, we're all here now, together, and doing it. The fact that the farther we go into this profession, the lesser in number we are is both scary and frustrating tbh, and I'm constantly reminded of it. Representation matters in all fields, and most especially medicine; we need y'all! Soo I understand that it might seem difficult rn going through the MCAT or getting that rejection, or failing that chem course. I promise you we've been there, but we made it still. So, I urge you to keep pushing cos it's all gonna be worth it. ❤ Anyway what do y'all have planned this week?

I've gotten a lot of messages about my French Toast...so swipe right for the video and here is the "recipe". ....BTW. I don't measure. I let the ancestors guide me. I made the custard with egg, milk, vanilla, cinnamon and garlic. Mix. I cut thick slices from a loaf of French bread. Soaked them on each side for like 30-90seconds. Large time range because i got distracted I think. Lol. Then cook on medium low heat in pan of left over bacon fat from the bacon i cooked. Maybe 3-5 min per side...you want crispy. My oven had preheated then to 350, so I put them in the oven to finish off for like 10min. I added rosemary garlic seasoning and cayenne to the leftover custard and scrambled the eggs. #TheDrZ #blackgirlwhitecoat #stethoscopescurlsandmedicalpearls #blackdoctors #womeninmedicine #foodie #frenchtoast #choczero

Have you exercised this morning? With the national pandemic proving to be an obstacle for many when it comes working out, that Quarantine 15…20…25 has snuck up on some.😳 ☀️Morning exercise💪🏾 can not only improve your quality of sleep, increase your metabolism to support weight loss efforts, improve overall health and wellness, and improve your mood, research also shows the following: 1.Morning moderate-intensity exercise can improve cognitive function over an 8-hour period in older adults, relative to prolonged sitting. 🤔💭🕗 2. ) Morning exercise is associated with reduced neurologically determined food motivation, thus improving appetite control🚫🍟🌮🍕🍱🚫 3. ) Morning moderate-intensity exercise evokes a decrease in blood pressure thus being especially beneficial for overall cardiovascular health and hypertensive individuals🤎❤️🖤💚🤎 4. )Morning exercise even decreases the risk of hypoglycemic events in Type 1 diabetics⬇️✅

I am learning, even at 29, to dismiss things that no longer serve my higher purpose. I won’t compromise my morals and my integrity for a paycheck- that’s on GOD (and them! ). Two weeks ago I was praying to God to find another job, one where patients came first and where I would be able to use good, sound clinical judgement to treat and medicate my patients. Sure enough, me and one of my good girlfriends were meeting for some drinks and food. My friend is a psych NP as well and we have worked together through the years as RNs. My friend was telling me about a job she turned down because she couldn’t add anything else to her plate. She sent them an email and recommended me for that job...as their medical director. BOOM! Just like that, I interviewed and accepted the job as medical director of another practice (and am still a medical director of another practice ). As a (fairly ) new graduate psychiatric NP, I have realized that some practices and jobs may push you to do things you know in your heart are wrong. A lot of new graduate NPs have been in my shoes and feel pressured to do unethical practices. I tell them this: you can always get another job. It’s pretty damned hard to get another professional license or DEA license when stripped of your privileges... So I say this to say: follow your heart and God, they will never mislead you. It’s all part of God’s plan . . When I look at this white coat, I think of the sleepless nights, tears, struggle, and countless failures that I have experienced over the past few years. I also think of my amazing family, friends, and anyone who has played a role in me getting this far. I see a childhood dream that came true. . . This journey has been a tough one. There have been beautiful highs, as well as terrible lows. Being pre-med was difficult. The MCAT humbled me, twice. Honestly, at one point, I doubted if medicine was for me. . . BUT GOD . .
All of the glory goes to God almighty. God has been with me through it all. He is so faithful. I am overwhelmed by His grace and love. Tomorrow I start medical school. I don’t know what the future holds but I know who holds my future. God wouldn’t bring me this far to let me down, so I move with faith. . . Psalms 37:5 says, “Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass.” Never give up on your dreams. If God did it for me, He will do it for you. . . #whitecoatceremony #futuremd #blackexcellence #blackgirlwhitecoat #classof2024 #aliefweherebabyyyyy

What does my job look like in gynecology? 👩🏽‍⚕️ ⠀ Y’all, gynecology is definitely more than just smears. I counsel women about heavy/irregular periods, PCOS, birth control, fertility, breast conditions, ovarian cysts, fibroids & the list goes on! 💕 ⠀ I perform procedures such as endometrial biopsies, inserting/removing nexplanons & inserting/removing IUDs. I also first assist in surgery! 💉 ⠀ The best part of my job would have to be the relationships that I form with my patients. Most women are terrified of their gynecologist & can be uncomfortable during their appointment. My goal is to provide a caring environment where my patients feel that they can be honest & open with me so I can give them the best care possible. 🥰 ⠀ I’m honored to have a job in a speciality that is rare as a Physician Assistant (Nurse Practitioner dominant specialty ). I thank God for the opportunity to not only provide the best healthcare to my patients, but to connect with women on a daily basis. 🚺

I don’t know who needs to hear this: but normalize healers getting paid adequately!!! Let’s talk about the one thing ‘healers’ are ashamed to talk about: MONEY! Now, I can’t lie- when I first graduated I was PRESSED to find a job. I spent $200 on a professional resume, $150 on my controlled drug license for maryland, $800 for my DEA certificate, and $200 for my maryland license. Not to mention $1400 a YEAR for my malpractice insurance! Not to mention paying my accountant and business licensing fees! It felt like I was oozing money left and right! As a nurse I grew accustomed to a guaranteed hourly rate but I saw so many providers in an outpatient setting taking pay splits with practices (between 65-70% of the service fee ). Now that may work well in a private practice where Medicaid and Medicare isn’t the majority of the clientele.... I knew that I needed to make a certain amount of money. One of my first jobs was fee for service. The no show rate cut my pay in half some days/hours. My first year I learned to advocate for myself and fight for the pay that I knew I deserved- and that was a FLAT hourly rate. The next jobs I applied for I demanded an hourly rate or cash pay/private insurance patients only. By law, Medicaid and Medicare patients can not be charged when they no show for an appointment. I’m not going to lie- I got about 5 ‘hell nos’, then I wound up with a YES that paid me above my hourly pay request. Lesson: one bird in the hand is better than two in the bush. #psychiatry #APRN #PMHNP #nursepractitioner #nursepractitionerlife #nursepractitionerinthemaking #registerednurse #rn #blackgirlmagic #blackgirlwhitecoat #psychiatrist #psychiatricnursepractitioner #psychiatricnurse Suit: @prettylittlething Shoes: @louboutinworld Unit: @thechristopherkyle Make up/hair: @mr .kanebeauty / @kane .beauty Photographer: @syn_monie
