Apparently, I like to reflect and draw on a Saturday! (Especially on a really rainy and stormy dark Saturday morning! ) 🤝 Even though the last few weeks have been “home-based” (that is what I have decided to call it now, sounds a little more positive ) they have still been BUSY! Between work (which has been just as manic as it usually is ), to having to entertain the kids (thank goodness for Andrew, or I would not be able to do it ), to the regular studying for all my classes, I am go, go, go during the working week. 🤝 Saturday morning has always been a more relaxed time for me. I often get back into bed with my coffee to talk with Andrew, and the last two Saturday mornings, I have also digested what I have listened to and spoken about during @jpscott .med Friday Night Virtual Happy Hour! 🤝 Last night, not only during that wonderful two hours, but also to friends, I was talking about the importance of social support, in terms of helping with resilience, dealing with stress, and a general sense of belonging. 🤝 This morning, whilst thinking of all that, I drew this… these hands, together, connected, as so many of us are right now, seemingly more than ever, even if we are not physically together. 🤝 There is nothing more important in my life than my social support, all of it, from my family to my friends. Without them, I would not be able to do all that I do. Period. 🤝 Today, I am thankful for connections, and for those that show caring and kindness first and foremost! 🤝 #predental #premed #dentalstudent #medicalstudent #dentist #beawesometooneanother #dentalschool #medicalschool #futuredentist #futuredoctor #womenindentistry #womeninmedicine #nontraditionalstudent #doctormom #drawing #art #hands #holdinghands #artanddentistry #artandmedicine

𝐁𝐞 𝐚𝐰𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 ⁣ ⁣ This pandemic has really been weighing on my heart. Not the worry of the virus itself, but the things exposed in my own heart and in our society. ⁣ ⁣ I realize I struggle to feel at peace when my schedule isn’t busy. I’ve been racing towards a finish line for so long that I never bothered to stop and realize that once I crossed it I simply drew another one. ⁣ ⁣ I don’t know how to just “be” at home. I’m working on it, but it’s hard for me. Ironically, I feel more calm at work in the ER than at home because there are least I feel useful. ⁣ ⁣ I see people at the grocery store and they’re scared. They’re backing away from me if I get too close trying to walk across and grab some fruit. There is panic in their eyes. They’re taking measures to protect themselves but they aren’t really the right measures and it breaks my heart that they have misinformation. ⁣ ⁣ Tempers are short right now. People feel backed into a corner. So many are worried about how they’re going to pay their rent, their mortgage, supply their family with basic needs? ⁣ ⁣ My family and I are lucky. We still have two incomes. We have so much emotional and physical support from our community. We have our health, and we have each other. ⁣ ⁣ @marchesedmd started the #beawesometooneanother campaign last week and I’m so grateful for it. It’s reminded me to have extra grace for people, to lean in to my strengths, to provide encouragement and support for my community because that’s something I’m good at. ⁣ ⁣ I’m writing this for myself more than anybody, but I hope this campaign touches you in some way too. Who we are in crisis is telling, and defining. Let’s be good. Let’s be kind. Let’s be human. ♥️ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #beawesometooneanother #YOUMATTER #nursesofinstagram #instanurse #ernurse #emergencymedicine #covid_19 #coronavirus #quarantine2020 #stayhome #frontlineER #emergencyem #firstresponder #nursingstudent #nurse #nurselife #rn #healthcare #healthcareworker #staysafe #nurseblog #nurseproud #yearofthenurse #scrublife #instagood #practicegratitude #compassion ⁣ ⁣

STUCK at home or SAFE at home🏠 It’s amazing how one little word can totally change your perspective! Just try to remember, even when you’re feeling discouraged during this time, that we will get through this and WE are in this together. So let’s continue to shift our mindset and focus on the fact that we will stay healthy by staying at home! We’ve got this! • A HUGE thank you from our team to all the medical staff, first responders, essentials workers, teachers, and so many more who have stepped up to fight and support us during this crazy time we are living in! 💞 . . . . #spreadjoy #stayhome #staysafe #wearehereforyou #pandemic #covid19 #flattenthecurve #socialdistancing #beawesometooneanother #teamsupport #rf #staystrong #selfcare #lovemytribe

My coworkers and I have found ourselves floating to other units during this time. Yesterday I floated to the hospital’s surgical oncology unit. We were given 4 exam rooms on this unit so that we can continue seeing our gynecology oncology patients. It was nice having the ability to see where our new clinic was going to be located and where everyone was that we needed to provide care to our patients.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Working in the surgical oncology unit, we cared for patients that were being seen for pre-operative or post-operative visits. I assisted in a room where a patient sat and discussed their concerns for their upcoming procedure. The patient brought a tripod that they had set up prior to their visit and had attached their onto phone to it. Once the attending doctor came in, the patient began a FaceTime call with their family members. Like many other hospitals across the world, due to the virus our hospital is not allowing friends or family members of patients to attend their appointments to minimize any potential risk of spreading or contracting the virus. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It broke my heart to watch this patient scared and without the ability to be with their family during this appointment. I knew how fearful that patient may have felt not being able to receive the physical comfort they desperately needed from their family members. With a caring tone, I tried my best to offer some supportive words of encouragement during this time. The patient was very appreciative and offered to pray for my safety as a healthcare provider. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I couldn’t believe that despite the circumstances, this patient kindly offered to pray for me. My heart was filled with an abundance of gratitude ♥️ It was a simple yet meaningful reminder that this was why I have chosen to pursue a career in medicine. No matter how difficult things seem to be throughout all of the change I’ve experienced at work recently, our patients appreciate us & they need us now more than ever. ⁣⁣ ♥⁣⁣ ♥⁣⁣ ♥⁣⁣ #herlifeinscrubs #nursingstudent #futurenurse #l4l #f4f #nurselife #nursesrock #nurseentrepreneur #scrublife #scrubs #covıd19 #coronavirus #cna #beawesometooneanother #positivity #gratitude #aparttogether

Today I want to take a moment to list a few things that I’m grateful for!⁣ 💖 ⁣ -The love and acts of kindness from others -Opportunities to learn something new⁣ -My health and overall wellbeing ⁣ -The beauty of nature ⁣ -My friendships⁣ -Endless support from my family ⁣ -My coworkers and our teamwork ⁣ -The ability to take care of others during this desperate time of need⁣ ⁣ I know it can certainly be difficult to find positivity throughout all of this but if you take the time to list a few things that you are grateful for, you’ll be reminded of what truly makes you happy and what you appreciate the most. The past week I have found myself creating a list at the end of each day that consists of things that I’m grateful for, to boost my morale and lift my spirits.⁣ ⁣ I encourage everyone to set just a couple of minutes aside everyday to do the same. It’s important for each of us to take care of ourselves and focus on our mental health, this has helped me stay positive even on my most difficult days. I want to hear about what you’re grateful for, feel free to share below! 💓 ⁣ ♥ ♥ ♥ #herlifeinscrubs #nursingstudent #futurenurse #l4l #f4f #nurselife #nursesrock #nurseentrepreneur #scrublife #scrubs #covıd19 #coronavirus #cna #beawesometooneanother #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthadvocate #positivity #gratitude

The clinic halls are empty. We’re doing as much as we can to prevent families from needing to come to clinic. Converting visits to telehealth, postponing imaging and appointments and surgeries as much as we can. Trying our best to minimize the number of people in our building. Trying to do our part to keep kiddos and their families safe and healthy. ⁣ ⁣ I’m still coming to work and honestly, I’ve been feeling guilty. Guilty that I can leave my apartment to go to work in very little traffic, guilty that I’m not on the frontlines (I’m outpatient in a surgical specialty ), guilty that our clinic currently has the PPE we need, guilty that I was able to be swabbed for COVID-19 last week because of some respiratory symptoms and I was negative and able to return to work within 48 hours, guilty that I still have a job.⁣ ⁣ I’ve stepped away from social media a little bit because I need the space for my own wellbeing. It’s weird being in healthcare right now. I was able to see some kiddos in person yesterday for their appointments and wowow do I miss the kiddos, I miss a lot of things and I’m sure you do too. ⁣ ⁣ We all have our part to play right now. Seeing our kiddos recover, seeing the magic our surgeons can do, and seeing how my advocacy can make a difference is what’s keeping me optimistic. My team is incredible and I’m fortunate to work with such wonderful people. I’m doing my part to work with our families during this time, to check in with them, reassure them, and encourage them to stay home and wash their hands. I’m doing this while trying to care for myself too. I should not feel guilty but I am and I’m working on processing that along with all the other emotions coming up right now.⁣ ⁣ Ramble break over, gotta go chart. Love you fam (and as always extra shoutout to those on the frontlines right now )💜

A little reminder that it’s ok to feel everything that you’re feeling right now — overwhelmed, stressed, anxious, sad, or unmotivated. It’s just as important to remember that these feelings will come and go. Binge watch that show without guilt. Learn a new language. FaceTime/Zoom/call your loved ones that you’ve told yourself you’ve been too busy to check up on. Sleep in. Do what rejuvenates your soul. We’re stronger at staying at home, but we’re not alone. ✨ #BeAwesometoOneAnother

I’m even more grateful now for the amazing team full of MDs, RNs, RTs, and techs I get to work with during this pandemic (still feels like I’m in a weird nightmare typing this ). I think we are all on edge and have some kind of anxiety as we are all aware that the spread of the virus hasn’t peaked yet. We continue to gown up with one another and adapt to the daily protocol changes that are occurring. There is so much frustration surrounding this pandemic but realizing we have one another to get through each 12 hour shift makes life a little more bearable. Wherever you are remember to #BeAwesomeToOneAnother , we are all fighting our own battles. Be kind. Be aware. Be safe! Thank you @marchesedmd for your amazing message! 🙏🏽

𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝟑𝟏𝐬𝐭, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟎⁣ ⁣ Today our hospital started “wellness checks”. Myself and coworkers were asked a series of questions as we were screened for COVID-19 symptoms. Once we completed the wellness check, we were cleared to work and were given a colored sticker to place on our badges. This sticker was made to be visible for everyone around the hospital and was an indication that we had been screened prior to starting our shifts. ⁣ ⁣ Once we placed our brightly colored stickers on our badges, we were asked to sign our names on a piece of paper that acknowledged we weren’t experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms today. We were then given two surgical masks, the kind that have the elastic ear loops attached to them. We were also handed a brown paper bag and a sharpie with the instructions to write our name on that paper bag. ⁣ ⁣ We all took one surgical masks and placed the second one in our paper bag as we were instructed to. This was the 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 I had the ability to wear a mask while working in my unit since the COVID-19 outbreak. We were told early on when word of this virus started receiving attention, that wearing a mask wasn’t necessary since our patients were screened prior to them seeing our providers. The patients that are screened are asked the same questions that we get asked during our wellness checks and they don’t have their temperature taken until they meet with me. ⁣ ⁣ My role is to collect vitals from patients prior to them meeting with their doctors. Until today I haven’t been protected by any form of a barrier when in contact with patients except for gloves. We were told that wearing a mask would worry our patients and that it was inappropriate to do so. The truth was that it worried me daily when patients had the ability to wear a mask but I wasn’t given that same right or access to one. ⁣ ⁣ Today I let a sigh of relief, knowing that we were all finally given a mask even though I knew we weren’t going to have access to an N95 mask. All units in our hospital are completely out of N95 masks and almost out of surgical masks. Their goal is to collect our masks in those brown paper bags so that they can sterilize and return them back

During this difficult time, it is important to spread positivity instead of panic and paranoia. Spread compassion, kindness, hope and love. . Remember there are people who are enduring this Shelter in Place ALONE at home. Make sure to reach out to your friends and family who may be feeling extra Lonely/Scared/Anxious/Depressed right now. Be the positive and uplifting spirit they need to get them through this time. . Third-year College of Dental Medicine student Gregory Marchese started an Instagram campaign with a hashtag #BeAwesomeToOneAnother , showcasing how humanism is imbued as a rich tradition in WesternU’s mission statement. “While those on the health care and public health frontlines are doing their part to diagnose, treat, research the outbreak, all humans can be involved with being good, kind, and supportive of each other - every day, but more so now than ever before,” Marchese wrote on an Instagram post starting the campaign. “This is our call to help #BeAwesometoOneAnother . To show that compassion always wins – that when we think of all of us, we all pull through – together.” Marchese ( @marchesedmd ) is an influencer on Instagram and challenged fellow influencers, both WesternU students and fellow community influencers, to participate, hoping to reach more than 250,000 Instagram users. College of Graduate Nursing MSN-E student Erica De Haro ( @themindfullnurse_ ), College of Veterinary Medicine student Jaky Wilson ( @thesustainablevet ) and College of Optometry student Nadia Afkhami ( @eyeamnadia ) are among the WesternU students participating in this campaign. 📸 Let’s see more photos with the hashtag #BeAwesomeToOneAnother posted on Instagram. Isolating myself in my cubicle today. 😆 I saw a couple of new patients in the morning and now I'm doing mostly phone visits until lunch. . . Blessed to be able to do telemedicine for my stable patients at this time of pandemic. I wouldn't want my interstitial lung disease, pneumonitis, COPD/asthmatic patients to go to our clinic where they can get exposed to covid. . . Eventhough I am a high risk being pregnant and asthmatic working in pulmonary..and I see patients who are sick and work with doctors and residents who round in the hospital, I am still thankful I have a job. Not all of us are that lucky. 🙏🏽 . . This pandemic is teaching us something. Now is the best time to slow down, be thankful for what we have (health, family, food etc ) and help those who are in need if we're fortunate enough. ❤ . . #womeninhealthcare #nursepractitioner #nursing #pulmonarynp #specialty #criticalcare #npsofinstagram #telemedicine #telephonevisits #clinicday #medicine #covid19 #pandemic2020 #helpeachother #beawesometooneanother

On Tuesday, March 31st, is César Chávez Day. A holiday proclaimed by President Barack Obama in 2014. _______________ The university I attend, @csusm , has a huge statue of him in the front of campus to remind us every day on the mission statement and foundation of our Hispanic serving institution. ______________ Cesar was a civil rights activist, educator and an advocate for social justice. ______________ Let's remember those who led with heart, soul and a true passion for a greater good. Although right now, it seems we may be in the hands of wealthy individuals with no love for humanity, we must know it's only temporary and that there are many others out there that will always step up to continue to fight for what is right.

#BeAwesomeToOneAnother . “I’m scared to go to work.” Something I’ve heard a lot lately. I’ve also felt it and shared my feelings of anxiety with my loved ones. I wanted to share with you all a lovely message my friend @taylordthegreat sent to me yesterday in response to that sentiment. Words have power. That’s why the positivity from this movement matters. That’s why when you’re in the trenches at work and have several patients who are giving you a run for your money and that one patient takes the time to say “thank you, I think you’re going to be a great nurse” gives you that little boost of energy that you need to get through the last four hours of your shift. . Mr. Rogers said in times of trouble, “look for the helpers.” I’m humbled by every story I see about small businesses sending food to the hospital, by people sewing face masks for healthcare workers in their homes, by volunteers who get groceries for the elders in their community, by the community at large that has come together to stay home (even if you don’t feel like you’re helping, you are💛 ), by my colleagues who are sharing vital information to keep the public informed, by every brave doctor, PA, nurse, cna, rad tech, phlebotomist, respiratory therapist, housekeeping, and so many more who continue to show up during this crisis. I’m humbled by @nursesonja and @nurse .tami who are shouting from the rooftops to get us more PPE. I’m humbled by every person who chooses to address this crisis with kindness and compassion instead of giving into fear. Keep being awesome to one another. We’ll get through this 💛

Just a reminder to #beawesometooneanother and make sure that you’re spreading kindness through these difficult times. It’s so important now more than ever that we are checking on each other’s mental health as much as physical health. @marchesedmd thanks for putting this campaign together! -•• • #optometry #womeninmedicine #optometrist #glasses #eyes #loveoptometry #eye #lashes #optometrystudent #eyedoctor #eyelashes #futureoptometrist #futuredoctor #persian #womeninoptometry #whitecoat #doctor

# B E A W E S O M E (to one another ) ⠀ This is a very confusing and trying time for all of us. People are off work, school is being done virtually, lines are forming outside of grocery stores, and toilet paper has become a new form of currency - something I never thought I’d witness in my lifetime, but here we are. ⠀ Last week my school pulled us from clinical rotations with no definitive answer on when we will be able to go back out there. As a PA student, it SUCKS having to sit on the sidelines and not be able to help in this time of need… But as a Public Health student, I completely understand why these precautions are being taken. ⠀ So, while we are all stuck “Sheltering at home” let’s stop focusing on the negatives and start thinking about the positive impacts we can be making. Let the healthcare professionals diagnose, research, and treat the outbreak, and let each of us show kindness, compassion, and support to one another! Follow the rules (they’re in place for a reason )… Keep your physical distance from each other and connect virtually instead. Take only what you need, so that others can do the same. Let the elderly go first, help the immunocompromised stay safe from infection, support those who have less than you, take care of your physical and mental health, and just do your best to be a light in this dark time we’re all experiencing. ⠀ This is our call to help. #BeAwesomeToOneAnother ⠀ Shoutout to @marchesedmd for putting this awesome campaign together, and thanks for letting me be a part of it!

#961 // 032520 // 11:45⁣ ⁣ #BeAwesomeToOneAnother ⁣ ⁣ 𝗪𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞. 2020 definitely has been a wild ride so far. This past week, for me saw one of the most sudden changes in my career - from being a frontline healthcare provider to sitting this one out. And my public health mind kicked in, reflecting, thinking, wondering. ⁣ .⁣ My realization was this: ⁣ .⁣ If humanity has shown us anything over time, 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐟 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫. ⁣ .⁣ If we recognize that we’re 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐭.⁣ .⁣ And not just living it, but 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐭.⁣ .⁣ And when I look back, I want out story to be 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞. 𝐮𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠. 𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝. ⁣ .⁣ Like so many times before.⁣ .⁣ There’s 𝐧𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐒𝐀𝐑𝐒-𝐂𝐨𝐕-𝟐 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭. ⁣ .⁣ Our strength is in 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲. 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧. 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐞.⁣ .⁣ Let’s be together, apart. ⁣ .⁣ While those on the healthcare and public health frontlines are doing their part to diagnose, treat, research the outbreak, all humans can be involved with being good, kind, and supportive of each other - everyday, but more so now than ever before. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 #𝐁𝐞𝐀𝐰𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐓𝐨𝐎𝐧𝐞𝐀𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 . 𝐓𝐨 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐬 - 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐮𝐬, 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 - 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫. ⁣ ⁣ The last few weeks, we’ve been given an opportunity to show this compassion, but we can still do so much more - we need to keep that physical distance, and connect digitally - for now. To take just what we need, so that others may be able to get the supplies they need in order to survive. To be compassionate towards disadvantaged populations - the elderly, small business owners, and those racially disadvantaged, all of whom this is outbreak is enough of a burden without adding to it. ⁣ ⁣ #beawesometooneanother #wearfigs #compassionalwayswins #publichealth #onehealth #pandemic #cdc #unity #compassion #hope .

When the days start blending into each other there comes a time when you start to feel like a very small human. Isolated. Disconnected from the world. But we are still very much connected. We just need to try. In a weird way, social distancing is like we have all entered long distance relationships. 😋 And long distance relationships take effort. 😉 As the leader of my practice, I've reached out to my elderly patients to make sure they have all their groceries, etc. Most just wanted to talk though. 😊 As the leader of his practice, my therapist reached out to me via email. He asked how I was doing and that I was on his mind today.🙏 We give and we receive. We may be physically isolated, but we still have reach. We can still make an impact. Let's all try to #beawesometooneanother Thanks @marchesedmd inviting me to join this campaign! Happy humpday friends. And Yes. It is Wednesday today. 😅 . . . . #joycethedentist #ocdentist #theocdentist #ocblogger #ocveneers #newportbeach #kindnessmatters #socialdistancing #youarenotalone #communityovercompetition
