Food freedom isn’t perfect. You have days where you feel liberated and other days where you subconsciously talk yourself out of having that last chicken wing because you didn’t just run all those ks to eat all the calories back. It’s human to slip back into old habits. In this strange time you might be reaching for your fave snacks every night or ordering takeout a little more than usual. Food guilt might be at an all time high. Give yourself some compassion guys. Food CAN be joy without the strings attached. You don’t have to constantly be burning more than you’re consuming. You don’t have to always eat with your body shape in mind. It doesn’t have to be this way. I try to work on changing my mindset every day in little ways, like finishing my plate despite the urge to stop before I’m full and allowing myself to eat until I’m fully satisfied. I try to tune into my body and give it what it needs and, equally importantly, what it wants. Cutting off ties with diet culture made me feel a little lost and directionless at first but being FREE, not perfect, is life changing. IS IT SNACK TIME, MUM? Not going to lie. A packet of crisps is often the answer to a snack request round here. All foods fit, from a lovingly-prepared snack platter to a ‘chop your own’ veg board, to whatever packaged biccies and crisps were on offer at the shops. Kids need to learn how to handle the food environment as it is and, for me, part of that is having some access to the foods often thought of as ‘unhealthy’ at home. Not at every snack or meal, and not on demand, but as part of the overall picture. This works for me... so when we have time to bake together and all sit down to a big shared plate of cookies and fruit, the kids get the chance to learn sharing and eating to the point of satisfaction. And when I’m busier they can have something out of a packet or whatever’s easy to throw onto the table and let them prepare themselves (oatcakes, breadsticks, cheese - little one is partial to a cheestring - spreads, fruit, veg, etc ). There are lots of different ways to approach snack time and I think what’s key is to find something that works for you, remembering that structure and some level of predictability is important for little ones. So reasonably fixed snack times and knowing ahead of time what’s on the ‘menu’ and if and when you’ll be sitting down with them. Three ingredient healthy vegan cookies ✨ these are one of my go to easy recipes when I am craving something sweet. This is a strange time in the health and fitness industry. It’s an especially weird time to be a dietitian. I find myself word vomiting to clients before our sessions even start “I’m here for you - it’s ok if you goals are different now than they were before this whole thing started - if you want to focus on something other than fat loss I can still help”. This new normal means most of us are dealing with some extra emotional STUFF. • • Stress, boredom, sadness, anxiety are all valid reasons to use food as comfort. That’s not the issue. In fact, we all use food emotionally sometimes. The issue arises when/if that’s the only means of coping with your emotions. It’s important to have other tools in your toolbox. An alternate behavior to divert to in times of discomfort or stress. • • It’s crucial to have a coach that understands what’s going on and how to help. This may not be the time to track your macros or weigh your food. THATS OK. That strategy will always be there for you when you need it. It may be a time to explore some other pathways to “deal” with what’s going on. • • Here are a two things to test out the next time you feel like using food for relief but you’d like to try something new, either: 1. Deal with it - write it down or call a friend to vent ——— or ———— 2. THIS. Diet culture is a liar. It steals your money and constantly gives you hope on shrinking your body. What they fail to tell you: diets don’t work long term (➡️95% of dieters regain the weight they lost, plus usually more, within 5 years ); weight-cycling is harmful, as well as weight-stigma. Dieting also can lead to eating disorders or disordered eating. The evidence and research for diets is definitely NOT favorable - and diet companies are not selling you a solution. EAT D🍩NUTS EVERYDAY & LOSE WEIGHT . Full Day of Eating 1,740 calories. quick side note: this is deficit calories/macros for me. MEANING, I could eat a donut every single day and lose weight. You could too!! Ask me how 🤗 . Meal 1: Quick oats with powdered pb and a tiny splish splash of sf vanilla syrup. Sf almond milk latte. . Meal 2: chocolate sprinkled donut. I split the cofffee - large iced coffee with almond milk, and 2 French vanilla flavor swirls (the typical amount for a large is 4 ). . Meal 3: Tuna pouch and jasmine rice. Yogurt bowl. . Meal 4: Another iced latte... eggs and toast . Meal 5: chicken, veggies, rice. . You’ll notice I didn’t log any sauces or seasonings. Anything that was used to season my food were all “zero calorie” seasonings. Yes, these do technically have calories, but for my purposes and most people (unless you’re stepping on stage ), the can go without tracking. . **If seasonings/sauces DO have calories (even if it’s only 5/serving ) it is important to know the amount of the serving because they can easily be overused. These, I do track.

Trying to change because you hate your body will never work long term - yeah it might get you to the gym a bit more for a while but it won’t last. You can’t feel that way long term without it wearing you down. But if you are a person who does want to work on their health - cool, that is something that is absolutely doable without it having anything to do with feeling like you have to change your body or that you aren’t good enough until you lose x pounds. Lately people have really been in a tizzy over this idea that you don’t have to pursue weight loss to pursue wellness. I often have people tell me that canned fruits and veggies don't have any nutrients. That's completely false! Canned fruits and veggies have lots of nutrients, although they do tend to have slightly less of some nutrients than fresh or frozen. They are still nourishing.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Don't be afraid to use all options that are available to you - fresh, frozen, canned, dried, freeze dried. They all count. Humans are great at adapting and overcoming adversity - one way is through preserving food in different ways for different situations. All foods fit mentality 🤯 As a ‘food expert’ many people wanna talk good vs bad when it comes to food. People have always felt the need to classify foods in that way. I would love to help shift the mentality to ‘how do foods make me feel’. When I eat a dozen donuts, how do I feel? Frankly, like crap. How do I feel when I eat a big leafy salad with plenty of veggies and lean protein? Honestly, good for a few hours until I’m hungry again 🙃. It comes down to calories in vs calories out (for weight loss, maintenance and bulking ). rejoicing and finding joy 💗 it’s different than feeling happy. it’s finding the purpose to rejoice even in the midst of trials. right now, i rejoice because i have jovin by my side. i rejoice because i truly believe we are better together than apart. i rejoice because difficult moments humble us and teach us so much. i rejoice because there is so much to be thankful for despite all this. we’re going to spend the rest of our lives together. with or without that “dream wedding” of ours. with or without all the glam, flowers, decorations or things that took 10 months to plan. with or without things we stayed up late for and sacrificed sleep to work on. these past couple of days, i would break into tears instantly just thinking about how that was quickly taken away days before the wedding day. it was overwhelming, emotional, brought anxiety and led to sleepless nights. now, i’m just excited to marry my man with or without all the things. it may not be our ideal venue with our 250 guests, but just 4 others. Today we got our keys to the new place! In the midst of such a strange week, there is so much to look forward to. We are excited to have more space, an office, a big kitchen, a yard and so much more. Though we are still renting, this is what we’re calling home for at least the next chunk of time! Who’s coming to visit?! . . . . Also shoutout to the amazing @fivefootfashionista for helping us find the perfect place. Really, she was so patient with us and made sure we got exactly what we wanted. Thank you Zarya!
