Diahann Carroll made a number of films during her career and was nominated for an Academy Award for Claudine in 1974. It wasn't until she was cast as the lead in Julia in 1968, however, that Carroll became a bona fide celebrity. The role made her the first African-American woman to star in her own TV series. She was nominated for an Emmy for Julia in 1969 and won the Golden Globe Award in 1968. #WomensHistoryMonth#BlackWomenMatter#BlackCreatives#DiahannCarroll

. . WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH: . HONORING PEGGY E. TRIPLETT, “MOTHER OF NOBLE” . Ms. Peggy E. Triplett, affectionately known as the “Mother of NOBLE” was there when it all began in 1976. In fact, she was the individual who initially brought sixty top ranking police executives together for a grant funded, black police executives symposium. This symposium led to the establishment of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE ). . . As a GS-15 government official, Director of Minority and Women’s Affairs/Special Assistant to the Administrator in the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration (LEAA ), Ms. Triplett traveled across the United States and kept a list of black police chiefs and police executives that she met and ultimately invited to the symposium. Unfortunately, there were no high ranking black women that she crossed paths with in those days. . Ms. Triplett had a honorable career with the federal government. She held administrative positions, was the Executive Assistant to the NYPD Police Commissioner, an Office Manager for the National Crime Commission, as well as the President’s Riot Commission. . Ms. Triplett is a native of Washington, D.C. and currently resides in Macon, Georgia. She will celebrate her 84th birthday this August. . Ms. Triplett is proud of the current female presence and leadership in NOBLE and she is looking forward to attending NOBLE’s 44th Annual Training Conference & Exhibit in Cleveland, Ohio. . As we close out Women’s History Month, we honor and celebrate Ms. Peggy Triplett, the “Mother of NOBLE”!.... She is indeed a “Phenomenal Woman”! . . Ms. Triplett, Congratulations and Thank You for your foresight, commitment, contributions and many years of service to the NOBLE organization! . #WomensHistoryMonth #PhenomenalWoman #NOBLEProud #MotherOfNOBLE #Trailblazer #LivingLegend #PeggyTriplett . https://noblenational.org/history/

Women's History Month 💖👩‍🔬👩‍⚕️👩‍🔧👩‍🏫👩‍🎓👩‍🎤👩‍🎨👩‍🚒👮‍♀️💖 Eleanor Glanville (1654-1709 ) was from Tickenham, North Somerset - halfway between @thebattleaxes , and our fab Clevedon venues. She was the first lady of British Natural History, and the Glanville Fritillary is one of just 2 native British butterflies named after British entomologists. She pursued her interests after the death of her second husband. She tried to bequeath her money away from her family, and after her death her children tried (unsuccessfully ) to overturn her will, arguing that only somebody insane would be that interested in butterflies!!! Hats off to all the trailblazing women who did their thing without worrying about public opinion ❤️👌🦋 Check out all our fab North Somerset venues via our location map. . #sayidoinsomerset #somersetweddingvenue #somersetwedding #womenshistory #womenshistorymonth #butterflies #bride #tattooedbride #independentwomen #somerset #NorthSomerset #Repost @thebattleaxesweddings . @clevedonhall @clevedonpier @official_waltonparkhotel @waltoncastle @nailseatithebarnweddings

Everybody knows that Coco Chanel completely changed the way women dress, but before her there was Amelia Bloomer who also made lasting changes in women's fashion through her work as an activist. Bloomer started her own newspaper, The Lily, after she was dissatisfied working at her husbands newspaper which didn't focus on women's issues enough. She used her paper to support women’s suffrage and the temperance movement, but she also used it to promote new ideas about women's clothing and undergarments. She insisted that women should ditch petticoats and corsets and wear flowy tops as well as skirts with pants underneath. She didn't invent "bloomers" but the outfit is named after her. @berkcoschoolswv #womensfashion #womenshistorymonth #ourhistory #educateyourself #themoreyouknow

At the end of #WomensHistoryMonth we want to celebrate our women survivor leaders protecting others from Coronavirus 🙏🏾🙏🏼 ⁣ Leaders like Thaiyamma who were once silenced by a brutal slave-owner, but in speaking truth to power, she is proving again and again that survivors won't be silenced. ⁣ ⁣ Today, she’s still raising her voice on behalf of her community—from employing rescued families, to advocating for better housing and water, to spreading awareness on coronavirus. ⁣ ⁣ Thaiyamma’s concern and commitment towards her family and her community is never ending. After hearing about the Covid-19 situation through the Released Bonded Labourer's Association and news, she has begun to spread awareness on the precautionary measures that need to be taken and urges her community members to stay home and stay safe. Together with IJM partners, survivor leaders like Thaiyamma have been reaching thousands of survivor families with hygiene kits, and to spread awareness amongst the most vulnerable and rural communities - we think these women are amazing! 🙌🏼🙌🏾🙌🏼🙌🏾 ⁣ #StoriesofHope

Kate Dunn Kate Dunn’s classical training in Italy is demonstrated through her work, having given her remarkable technical skills. Her work uses historical structures, such as the consistent altarpiece shape as well as religious references in her work. These ancient structures are combined with the gestural qualities of her paint application. Her artwork gives the exact sense of freedom and energy, and a vocabulary of power. She describes each of her pieces as starting with a phrase, a feeling or a colour, often through poetry and music. I love Dunn’s work. What do you think?

"I come from a professional dance background. I turned pro with The San Francisco Ballet at the young age of 15 and it was a career and lifestyle that required me to be incredibly thin, 89 pounds to be exact. As a woman, we have always been told that we aren’t as physically capable and strong as men. But here are the real facts: I am a woman, and I am strong. Getting into boxing was such a natural transition for me. It became a huge passion of mine after my 4-year professional dance career. Boxing pulled me out of my comfort zone and made my belief in myself and in my body soar. It made me feel badass, it made me feel sexy, it gave me confidence. Confidence is the key to getting anywhere in life. If you don’t believe in yourself and who you are, then why should anyone else? I always thought just lifting weights made me feel strong until I realized that my fists could defend me. The difference is profound. Lifting makes you feel strong, but boxing makes you feel invincible. Boxing has given me a new mindset, it makes me feel completely alive inside. Boxing has given me a warrior mentality. Boxing has made me realize that I am a strong woman, and I fight like a girl." - @sophiarose92 @boxrawwomen #WomensHistoryMonth

As March draws to a close, we have one final #WomensHistoryMonth story to share: the fascinating tale of Deborah Sampson. Sampson (1760-1827 ) was born in Plympton, Mass. to a farming family and worked as an indentured servant from the age of ten. Her life was that of a typical impoverished woman in her time, until she disguised herself as a man and enlisted in the Continental Army in the Fourth Massachusetts Regiment to fight in the Revolutionary War. She avoided discovery for eighteen months, when she contracted yellow fever and received an honorable discharge in 1783. By 1802 she was on tour to talk about her experiences, completing her performance with an elaborate military drill in uniform. She received support for her pension application from Paul Revere, a personal friend. ⁣ ⁣ Her wedding dress, pictured here, is part of our clothing and accessories collection. The gown, originally made around 1770, was reconstructed around 1785 and again in the late 1800s. It is made of linen with a repeating pattern of floral sprays and seashells. ⁣ ⁣ Keep exploring at HistoricNewEngland.org/Women.
