🏋️ The effects of short versus long inter-set rest intervals in resistance training on muscle hypertrophy and strength have been investigated in many studies, but the practical implications remain unclear (3 ). There is evidence (1 ) that longer rest periods (3min ) promote greater increases in muscle strength and hypertrophy in young resistance-trained men. But other studies (2 ) have found that short rest combined with low‐load training might induce a high amount of metabolic stress & greater acute levels of growth hormone (4 ) ultimately leading to improved muscle hypertrophy. However, they also say that long rest with high‐load training might lead to superior strength increases. In conclusion, general population and new gym goers should err on the side of caution and use longer rest periods to help build up strength as that is most likely going to benefit them in the long run with their specific goals. THF Challenge #5 ! The overhead squat! On this challenge we’re doing it with the heels raised. The higher your heels are raised the easier the movement is. Try starting off with shoes that have a heel as well, like running shoes. - Keep your heels planted. - Go as low as is comfortable - Keep the bar straight above not tilting forward. If you go so low it’s starts to tilt, you need to bring your squat up a little. Check out the side facing video to see what I mean. Lv 1: Heel raised, bar coming forward Lv 2: Heel raised, bar staying straight up Lv 3: Heel raised, bar straight and multiple squats Lv 4: Full overhead squat with feet flat on floor Give it a go it’s a hard one! As we were walking with the boys last weekend, we reminded them that you climb a mountain one step at a time. And for me, it was timely advice because I realized I needed to hear it just as much as them!⠀ ⠀ These past few weeks have been extremely stressful and while our lives have changed in many ways, we have to ask ourselves some really important questions.⠀ ⠀ 1. Has our values changed?⠀ 2. Has our principles changed?⠀ 3. Has our ethics changed?⠀ ⠀ Mine have not. ⠀ ⠀ 1. Has our priorities changed? ⠀ 2. Has our goals changed?⠀ 3. Has our focus changed?⠀ ⠀ Absolutely!⠀ ⠀ The path is never straight and in March, 2020 we felt an abrupt change in course. It left many of us feeling lost or even a little hopeless, but it has not changed our values, principles, and ethics. Our core beliefs and loves remain consistent and that is where I am directing my attention. I hope you are too. ⠀ ⠀ We can overcome anything, as long as we continue to take one step at a time. Bring that focus in on the short term and make micro-goals that you are sure to achieve. It's time to start checking those boxes and getting ownership of our lives again. ⠀ ⠀ It's ok to be scared, to be sad, and to be stressed and worried. It is NEVER ok to quit! ⠀ ⠀ We are truly #GettingUncomfortable in 2020!!⠀ ⠀
