#mondaymindfulness Mindful Eating Too often, we don’t pay attention when we’re eating. We are either distracted by technology or in a rush and eating too quickly, so the act itself has become mindless. This is an issue considering it takes your brain up to 20 minutes to recognize that you’re full. Mindful eating is a way to reach a state of full attention to your experiences, cravings, and physical cues when eating. Mindful eating involves techniques including: eating slowly and without distraction listening to physical hunger cues and eating only until you’re full distinguishing between true hunger and non-hunger triggers for eating engaging your senses by noticing colors, smells, sounds, textures, and flavors eating for overall health and well-being noticing the effects food has on your feelings appreciating your food By eating mindfully, you restore your attention, making eating an intentional act instead of an automatic one. And, you also increase your awareness of physical hunger and fullness and to distinguish between emotional and true, physical hunger. Many use these words interchangeably to mean the same thing, but they are not totally exactly the same, although they are related and almost the same. 😃 Microbiota is basically the ecological communities in various parts of our bodies that contain commensal, symbiotic and pathogenic microorganisms. Note that this term includes all of the microorganisms, beneficial and pathogenic, such as bacteria, fungi and viruses. These communities are found on our skin, mouth, gut, genitalia and other areas. While the term microbiome also represents the microorganisms in the different environments, it specifically was used to refer to the combined genetic material contained in all the microorganisms in that community. Currently, scholars and scientists continue to re-define the term microbiome. They are looking to define microbiome as including the microbiota plus its activities in proteins/peptides, lipids and polysaccharides and its structural DNA and RNA. Investigators continue to discover other aspects of these communities in which they are still seeking understanding. Stay tuned, because the scientific world never ceases to stop learning how God made us. REFERENCES: Berg, G., Rybakova, D., & Schloter, M. (2020 ). WHAT DO THEY HAVE IN COMMON?✨ Fruits, veggies, beans and whole grains contain DIETARY FIBER which is an important factor in healthy eating and helps with many health conditions, such as... Heart disease➡️helps reduce cholesterol. Weight management➡️ slows the speed of the food passing from the stomach to the rest of the digestive system making us feel full for a longer period of time. Diabetes➡️ May help control blood sugar levels because fiber helps slow the break down of food. Digestive issues➡️ fiber increases bulk and helps the frequency of bowel movements! Recommended amount of dietary fiber👉🏻 25 grams for women and 38 grams for men each day. Can vary depending on energy needs🍎🥕🥒 #dietitian #dietaryfiber #gastrointestinal #ibs #healthyoptions #nutrients #wholefoods #nutrition #weightmanagement #diabetesmanagement #digestiveissues #nutritioncoach #nutritioncounseling #hearthealth #healthandwellness #rd #rdinprivatepractice

“I just want to stop thinking about food ALL THE TIME” - almost every client’s frustration . And when I say “you can & WILL stop obsessing over food!” Most clients feel like it would be impossible to get there..like a dream . Which is why EVERYONE should know, you really CAN stop obsessing about food. . I also used to be stuck in this mind trap- it’s like quicksand that you slowly sink in and just can’t get out of. . Overthinking food before, during, and after meals… Feeling content on “good” food days or distraught on “bad” food days.. Then feeling upset by the fact that it’s so upsetting. What a frustrating place to be. 😔 . “When we’re extremely stressed or overwhelmed, we look for ways of coping. And for some people, having very, very tight control over their eating is a way for them to feel like they’re in control, but then the irony is that they’re not... Being healthy mentally means having flexibility, and having time and mental space freed up for other kinds of things, and not having your world revolve around food.” -Dr. Jennifer Mills, PhD Psychology . If you’re tired of thinking about food all the time, I would be happy to chat with you over the phone about how to do this and how I can help you get there. 🤘🏼Link in bio for a free consult call.

Cutting out or demonizing food is NOT honoring your body. Food is not moral. It’s food. You’re not a bad person for eating a box of oreos and you sure aren't AMAZING for eating all whole organic superfoods (you are actually probably a little annoying to be honest ). I encourage you to think about ways you can improve your health independent of weight and a fad diet. . . . . . . . #habitchanges #changeyourhabits #antidiet #haes #healthatallsizes #stopdieting #intutitiveeating #screwthescale #nutritioncounseling #healthyhabits #foodfreedom #mindfuleating #antidietrevolution #ditchthediet #nondiet #antidietculture #bodypositivity #bodypositive #dietsdontwork #selfcare #dietculture #allbodiesaregoodbodies #bodyimage #rdrxnutrition #mentalhealth #nourishnotpunish #trustyourbody

It doesn’t have to be complicated! Here are some super easy steps you can take today to work towards healing your gut without having to invest in crazy expensive supplements, medications, and food plans. Start small - a baby step is still a step in the right direction and can make all the difference!!! 🤩 We are all at different places in our lives, have different financial responsibilities, and have different goals. That’s why NO ONE treatment plan can be applied to everyone. We have to look at you as an individual and decide from there what the best plan of action is TOGETHER. I would never tell you “this is what you need to do” without considering your feelings on the matter.

Give yourself permission to fail, and provide yourself an opportunity to learn from it. It's ok to have: - Bad days, weekends, or even weeks. - Mess up a meal (shoutout to burning chicken ). - Go over macros, under macros, whacky macros. - Eat and drink too much or too little. - *Insert a myriad of nutrition/health things here* Falling short of a goal is a chance for learning and growth that will help us get to where we want to go - acknowledge times like these instead of ignoring them. Don't let what could be a lesson become the moment you throw in the towel. Use them in a positive way, and move on. This same thinking applies to a lot of things in our lives where messing up once shouldn't be the ultimatum that decides success - whether it's in our relationships, our careers, or our fitness and nutrition to name a few. #xplorenutrition #nutritioncoaching #nutritioncounseling #nutritionguide #nutritionguidance #rd2b #performancenutrition #crossfitnutrition #mentalhealthadvocate #lifelesson

✨Happy Monday✨ . . ✨First and foremost, I am a firm believer that we should be striving to get our nutritional needs met through a colorful and diverse diet. However, there are many instances in which supplementation is a great option. 🔵Bio-individual differences and nutrigenetics: everybody is different and certain pathways including the metabolization, absorption and utilization of key nutrients may potentially be hindered or altered dependent upon the individuals genetics and lifestyle. 🔵Optimal Nutrition: even when we are getting the majority of our nutrients from our food there are key supplements which could provide additional support to major systems such as omega-3 or pre/probiotics. Also, daily intake recommendations for nutrients are actually quite low for optimal functioning. 🔵Supporting root imbalances: often times health issues arise because of underlying imbalances; like the bio-Individual differences I mentioned above. When we get to the why??? of the problem supplements can be a great tool to restore balance. ✨I wanted to provide my clients with an easy solution to supplement shopping for quality products which is why I chose to partner with @emerson_ecologics . ✨ @emerson_ecologics is a wholesale supplement distributor who works with qualifying practitioners. If you have the appropriate credentialing (personal trainer, nutritionist, MD & more ) I highly suggest you sign up. The “Oh-So Famous” Diet Cycle 🔄😥 This is a cycle that I’ve been through over 100 times. It’s a cycle that many individuals are currently stuck on. It goes like this ... 👀 1️⃣ You decide it’s time to go on a diet 🥦 Why not, right? You’ll eat healthier, feel great and lose weight. Maybe you start searching online for a specific diet or hear about a diet from a friend. 🙂 2️⃣ You start to restrict food ⬇️ In your mind, you believe “If I eat less, I’ll lose more weight.” So you start restricting your calories, giving up certain food and only eat food that are in the guidelines of this “diet” that you’re currently on. ⚠️ 3️⃣ You binge due to feeling deprived 😨 After a few days (maybe weeks ), you end up binging because you’re feeling deprived. You gave up all the food that you actually enjoy and were only eating food that you’re “allowed” to eat. On top of all of that, you’re still in the mindset of “Eating less will get me to my goal faster.” 😔 4️⃣ You feel guilty for binging 😭 You start to put yourself down for ruining your diet. At this point, you’ve already “failed” so there’s no point in trying to continue. You go back to your old habits and after awhile you end up back at #1 . 🔂 The Never Ending Diet Cycle. 🔄😥 Imagine having a great relationship with food where you don’t need to restrict, binge, feel guilty or have food that you don’t even enjoy! ✨ DM me if you’re currently on this cycle and want to get off for once and for all! 📲💜

Your weekly reminder that you don't need to feel bad about anything you ate this weekend, my friend 🤗        If you are feeling bad or guilty, ask yourself these questions:        🍪 Am I restricting this food and therefore when it's available I can't stop myself from eating it?        🍪 Do I think this food is bad?        🍪 Do I just really like the taste of this food so I keep eating it when it's around?        🍪 Do I feel like I can't eat this food whenever I want?        🍪 Do I feel like if I eat this food it will derail my weight loss efforts?        These are some of the questions I work through with my clients. If you need help, reach out for support 🙌🏻        But remember 👉🏻 food is just food. It isn't good or bad. It can make us feel better when we're sad or stressed. I don't think it should be your only coping mechanism, but I think it certainly can be a coping mechanism.        DM to schedule a discovery call if you want support 🤗

This past week has really amplified my dissatisfaction with the nutrition world. From the extremely inappropriate reaction of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to the fact that so many of nutrition professionals said they never were educated on any racial/cultural issues.⁣ ⁣ What and how we eat is deeply connected to our cultural beliefs. Food is often part of our identity and a way to connect socially. However, we still are stuck in the mentality of foods having some moral value. Some foods are good, other are bad (or 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘰𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘭 ). So many cultures thrive on white rice, potatoes, or wheat flour yet we insist on telling people to switch to brown rice, avoid “gray” foods, and only eat whole grains. This effectively shames traditional diets and puts pressure on everyone to eat the same (white American ) way.⁣ ⁣ Cultural competence as we learn it in school is simply a nice way to say we have no idea about cultures but we will try to push our beliefs on others in a polite way. Unfortunately when it comes to health advice, in most cases, whiteness is the “norm”.⁣ ⁣ I learned about cultural humility from one of my (black ) professors at NYU. In contrast to cultural competency, this is a lifelong process of self-reflection and self-critique. In cultural humility we first examine our own beliefs. In order to truly practice cultural humility we should also be aware of historic realities such as legacies of violence and oppression against certain groups of people. The goal is self-reflection and life-long learning about the experience of others. This really resonated (and still does ) with me because I believe it is important to stay humble and acknowledge how little we actually know about other cultures. It is much more likely to make us listen.⁣ ⁣ We don’t need more workshops on cultural competency. We need to learn how to truly advocate for change without forcing our beliefs on others.⁣ ⁣ I also made a smoothie bowl this morning 🙃⁣ ⁣ #smoothiebowls #smoothietime #humbleandkind #stayhumbleandkind #humility #breakfastbowl #breakfastbowls #ranting #selfreflection #lifelonglearning

Client sessions can be filled with all kinds of emotion - mostly we have fun and find things to laugh about - But tears are not uncommon and so often people are surprised by their emotion when in session. A person’s relationship to food, relationship to their body, lived experiences, traumatic experiences, chronic pain, new diagnosis, poorly functioning GI tract etc can be a lot to carry - As “silly” as it may feel, your experiences ARE valid❤️

THOUGHTS ON HUNGER:⠀ ⠀ I first heard this analogy during a training from one of the founders of intuitive eating, @evelyntribole and it has stuck with me since. We don't question the urge to urinate, yet, the bodily sensation of hunger is questioned by so many dieters. For the chronic dieter, the minute hunger strikes, fear, anxiety and other emotions kick in. ⠀ ⠀ Common things I hear from clients:⠀ ⠀ 🥘I shouldn't be hungry yet, it's only 10 am! 🍽Why am I always hungry?⠀ 🍕I just ate 2 hours ago, why am I already hungry? ⠀ ⠀ We attach so much emotion and judgement to hunger. We think we are "bad" or wrong if we eat when it isn't "time." ⠀ ⠀ It is hormonal signals that communicate to our brain that the body and stomach are ready for nourishment. It's a NORMAL biological cue. You don't need to question it, you need to honor it. If you eat every time your body communicates hunger, you'll have better energy, balanced blood sugar, fewer cravings and less binging or overeating. ⠀ ⠀ If your hunger has you feeling confused, let's chat. Often, I see clients whose "hunger meter" is broken as a result of: disordered eating, restriction, skipping meals, binging, over-exercise, chronic dieting. I work with clients to tune into internal cues and trust the body again. In the early stages, this may require a bit of gentle structure with meals and snacks to get you back into a pattern of routine nourishment. ⠀ With practice, you'll relearn how to reconnect to the wisdom of your body. ⠀ *⠀ *⠀ *⠀ *⠀ *⠀ #intuitiveeating #haes #healthateverysize #orthorexia #bingeeatingrecovery #honorhunger #mindfuleating #bulimiarecovery #selfcare #nomorediets #bodytrust #foodfreedom #disorderedeating #edrecovery #internalwisdom #dietculture #dietculturesucks #nourishnotpunish #rdchat #nutritioncounseling #permissiontoeat

You may have noticed I updated my Insta profile to include “fat positive” as a descriptor of my professional stance. Some of you may be wondering what that means, so I thought I’d take a moment to explain a little bit more. To me, being a fat-positive dietitian means deliberately making space for — and affirming — fat bodies as they are, *without a size limit.* It means rejecting the pathologization of body size, celebrating size diversity, and refraining from colluding with intentional weight loss efforts, because there is too much evidence that doing so causes harm (to all bodies ). It means speaking out against weight stigma. It means practicing allyship in the the fat liberation movement and raising fat voices. It means continuously checking my thin privilege, unpacking my internalized fat phobia, acknowledging my blind spots and owning my (inevitable ) mistakes after I’ve become aware of them, and then trying to do better next time. It means seeking to make my practice approach and culture as inclusive and as safe as possible for all bodies, including the most marginalized bodies. I know I have been inspired by the other healthcare providers that name themselves as fat positive, and I am proud to do the same. Thanks to the amazing @bodypositive_dietitian for this perfect gift at the perfect time. And shoutout to the incredible @foodpeacedietitian for the creation of this swag!

Can eating kiwi help you poop? 💩 . . . YES! 🙌🏻 Well, possibly - some studies suggest that eating 2 kiwi daily 🥝 can enhance motility, increase the frequency of bowel movements (BMs ) and increase the frequency of *complete* BMs 👌🏻aka: if you’re struggling with constipation, you may want to try upping your kiwi game! . . . How? Scientists are still learning how kiwis work their magic ✨ but some theories point to an enzyme found in kiwi - actinidin - and/or the fiber content - since 2 kiwi will offer about 5 grams of fiber‼️I wouldn’t try this if you are allergic or if you need to watch your potassium intake (such as may be the case with a renal diet ) and of course, you should speak with your doctor and dietitian before starting a new intervention 👩🏻‍⚕️but in terms of safety, upping your kiwi intake is relatively safe for the general population 👍🏻 Kiwi is also #lowfodmap so you can try this while following a low FODMAP diet👏🏻 . . . Drop me a 🥝 below if you love kiwi 💕 and tell me if you prefer green or gold! I’ve been loving the sweet gold kiwis lately myself 🤩
