Free MCAT prep anyone ?⁣ ⁣ Sunday Story Time ☕️ ⁣ ⁣ The year was 2014. I was working full-time as a dental hygienist and studying for the MCAT. It was around this time that I realized That I no longer wanted to go to dental school but instead, medical school. Due to my work schedule I decided to Invest in a $2000 self paced Kaplan prep course. I was fortunate to have a job that allowed me to spend so much money and in my mind, I felt that it would guarantee success. ⁣ ⁣ I chose the self-paced course because I felt like I had discipline and I also didn’t have the time to attend in person classes . My schedule consisted of studying after work from 8 pm to 1 am. ⁣ ⁣ Then, on the weekends I would study from about 8 AM to about 8 PM. My study habits mostly included reading about biology and chemistry concepts alongside watching lecture videos and taking notes. I did a few questions here and there and took a half length practice test. ⁣ I didn’t establish a baseline score and I didn’t have a strategy to get my target score. ⁣ ⁣ I even said to myself “I’ll just take it again if I don’t do well”. 🙅🏽‍♀️smh 🤦🏾‍♀️ ⁣ ⁣ I discovered student doctor network the last week before my exam and there was this concept that people were talking about called “writing the MCAT”. This meant meant establishing your strengths and weakness based on practice tests and focusing on those concepts. ⁣ ⁣ I started doing that for the last week of my MCAT and I saw an increase in some areas except verbal reasoning/CARS because it was too late. Consequently I scored very low on the MCAT but my plan B worked out eventually. ⁣ ⁣ I realized that I had made a lot of mistakes such as :⁣ ⁣ ♦️working full-time while studying ⁣ ♦️not doing enough practice exam questions ⁣ ♦️not practicing my verbal reasoning/CARs critical section as much as I should of ⁣ ♦️not setting ambitious score goals ⁣ ⁣ I have spent many hours putting together an MCAT guide for aspiring medical students and I am happy to say that it will be launching this month so stay tuned!⁣

Hello! Welcome to my page. My name is Nav and I am just your everyday average student nurse documenting her journey through nursing school 🤓. A little bit about me👩🏻‍⚕️: I just turned 28 in March. I started my nursing journey in 2018 in the BScN program. During my studies, I encountered many personal issues which caused me a great deal of anxiety and depression. Due to my mental health, my grades were greatly impacted. I withdrew from the BScN program and got help from my doctor. Because my GPA was affected, I was unable to transfer my credits to the same BScN program. Due to that reason, I have now applied to the practical nursing program. My main goal in my career is to ultimately help people; whether I pursue a diploma or degree nursing. Just a side note to everyone second guessing themselves to starting school or anything for that matter. For what it’s worth, it is never too late to start over and to be whoever you want to be. There is no time limit. You can make the best or worst of it. And I truly hope you choose the best 😊 Welcome to my journey. I hope you enjoy! #studentnurse #nursingschoolproblems #nursingschool #nursingstudents #nursinglife 💉💊

👩🏽‍🏫As an educator, I have the responsibility of keeping my students mindset together within my course. You see, my students want to become nurses and radiologists one day. They must take my class as a prerequisite to enter into the nursing program. I have sent them emails every week to make sure they're ok. They're NOT OK! Many of them thanked me for providing words of encouragement and motivation to help keep them sane! They are TRULY going through some stuff (personal and work life ) and I wanted my students to know that I've got their back!⁣ ⁣ ⁣ 👩🏽‍🔬👨‍🔬👩🏼‍🔬👨🏾‍🔬🥼🧪🧫💉🧬A HUGE SHOUT OUT to the CNAs, nurses, doctors, EMTS and other healthcare professionals and providers as they CONTINUE TO SAVE LIVES AND HELP TO KEEP US AS SANE AS POSSIBLE. You rock! You're on the frontline for the nation's health and I appreciate you all!!! Also, we can't forget about the hospital staff that does intake, keep the hospital clean, counsel families and so much more. They deserve a shout out too!⁣

Although it may feel like the world is crumbling around us. Like there is nothing we can do to stop it. ⠀ ⠀ All of this fear, anxiety, overwhelm and uncertainty in this world has a way of SERVING us. ⠀ ⠀ The way the bad in the world will serve us might not always be super crystal clear but it’s there somewhere. ⠀ ⠀ For example; I might be at work much more now than ever. I come home more exhausted than ever. I’m loosing sleep which I’ve never struggled with before. But guess what, I have never been so focused on my fitness routine, on my personal development and on my relationship! ⠀ ⠀ I’m choosing to use this time to focus on my personal growth and my growth in my relationship! ⠀ ⠀ I will come out stronger, I will come out of all of this a better person. And you can to. You just have to choose to focus on what you CAN control instead of always what you CANT !

For the longest time I was always curious how nurses found time or how nurses remembered to take cute pictures at work. However, this is what I’d like to call, my new “uniform”, so it was hard to resist! 🤣 On a more serious note, I work on a designated COVID Unit and honestly I’ve developed anxiety with this pandemic. I feel like COVID is now apart of my life. There is not a day that goes by where I don’t see it on TV, social media, or have loved ones call me to get more information on this terrible virus. I am most thankful to the people that express their gratitude and for making sure I am ok during this time with me being on the frontline. This virus is real and should not be taken lightly. Don’t forget to check in on your healthcare works. It’s rough out here. #Nursesofinstagram #nursingstudents #nurselife #Travelnurse #Travelnurselife #nursesweek #NurseInspo #NurseGoals #RN #RegisteredNurse #NoviceNurse #Nursefriendly #nursememes #powerhousenurses #bloggerlife #blackgirlmagic #healthcare #covid #covid19 #melanatedrn #nursingstudentproblems

Run with Sam they said! The trails will be fun they said! It’s a nice day outside they said! Me: Ok! What they didn’t say is that Sam holds the World Record on Lost Dog TrailHead! They didn’t tell me he is the human equivalent to a mountain lion on those trails! But, I did find an opportunity to have some nursing interventions and teaching done. Vitamin K is synthesized in the Liver! And apparently I have good clotting factors. So here is what else I learned today, I chose a path, I fell pretty hard, but beat up and bruised I got back up and kept going! You only fail when you stop trying! Had fun with Sam, I may hate him a little for not taking my Grandpa status into consideration but I would do it all over again! “I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life... and that is why I succeed.” ~ Michael Jordan P.S. This one is for our healthcare heroes. We’ve all heard the amazing stories of hard work and dedication that our friends on the front lines are currently doing. Most of us have also heard about the struggles and risks that they continue to face. However, despite all of it, they still continue to show up for work shift after shift. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ So to express our gratitude and inspiration, I along with 11 other nursing students (some who are also currently working on the front lines! ) gathered together to voice a message that spreads awareness, strength & unity. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ Social distancing isn’t just a new fad word. It works. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Staying home saves lives. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ We need to protect our healthcare heroes too. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ & we’re all in this together. #nursesrock #nursestrong #nursingstudents #covid19 #stayhome #savelives

I am so thankful for being able to still work when 6.6million people have filed for unemployment, thankful for all our pregnant patients that are keeping their spirits up during these though times. Thankful for the wonderful people I work with here in L&D. Yes this is hard for all of us, but I am glad we are all able to smile, laugh and keep each other going. Praying for all the families that have lost loved ones, and for those that can not be with their dying loved ones. Thankful for those trying their best to help by contributing. I hope when this is all over, we all learn to love one another just a little more, and be kind💜 #stayhome #staypositive #tiktokdance #covid #healthcareheroes #doctors #nurses #nursingstudents

Everyone struggling, you’re in my thoughts. These past weeks have been reminders of how much we take for granted on a regular basis. . . Loved ones are dying alone. . . Your friends that are nurses are being asked to volunteer to work with strictly COVID patients. . . If I haven’t seen you in a while, we haven’t spoken, I love you guys. Brighter days are ahead of us. We will make it through the storm. . . And I hope that when things slowly starting easing up, we don’t ever take for granted the simplicity of life and all the lives lost trying to fight this battle. ✨❤️

• Excuse my ugly crying face you guys. Today @starbucks announced that they were going to start giving away free tall coffees to first responders (including nurses ), so I drove to the Starbucks drive thru near my home. I asked the kind woman at the drive thru if our location was doing it and she said that they were just doing tall hot coffees right now. I told her that was ok and that I could pay for my own iced coffee instead since I don’t like taking things if I have the money to pay for it. She told me, “No honey you are getting an iced coffee and you are not paying for it,” and proceeded to take my order. When I pulled up to the window, the barista handed me a venti drink and told me they wanted to upgrade it and had written “Thank you for all you do❤️” all over my cup. I started bawling and kept thanking them for doing something that they did NOT have to do. My anxiety has been so bad lately with everything going on, but this reminded me that there are other kind people in the world and that it’s going to be ok, no matter how bad things do or don’t get❤️💉 THANK YOU STARBUCKS AND YOUR WORKERS❤️🏥

• “You signed up for this.” ••• No. I signed up to help care for my patients in a safe work environment where PPE shortages/regulations aren’t a thing and where we don’t have to keep PPE and sanitizing wipes hidden. I signed up to help with diseases that had evidence-based practices on how to properly protect both healthcare workers and the patients. I will always love the nursing profession and am extremely grateful for all the nurses who have voluntarily offered to be my preceptors during this crazy time at my hospital, but please don’t ever tell a healthcare worker that they wanted to do this so they just need to suck it up and remain silent. We have families and loved ones too. (Disclaimer: Picture taken after a long shift )

I’m trying to see my glass half full and it seems I may need a little bit more in my cup if I’m going to pour into others.😪 🥛 🥤 🧃 🍹 🍸 🍷 ⁣ ⁣ I don’t want to study. ⁣ ⁣ But I have to. ⁣ ⁣ I have an exam tomorrow at noon so please pray for me that I’ll wake up on time. ⁣ ⁣ My focus has been just as off as my sleep schedule. I wake up at noon go to sleep between 2 and 5 AM on most days. I’ve been frequenting the New England Journal of Medicine like a midnight mad scientist reading about the latest Case reports, possible treatments and evidence based perspectives on covid-19. It gives me hope but also reminds me that I’ve got ways to go before I can make medical decisions of my own. I’m trying my best to stay positive but the truth is we’ve all been socially, emotionally and financially impacted by this pandemic. ⁣ ⁣ The question is will we emerge from this stronger, wiser and optimistic?⁣ ⁣ I really hope and pray we do.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #wednesdayswithwinnell

I’ll admit. The virus wasn’t my biggest worry at the start of it all. Data was still slowly coming to light. I still had my flight to Thailand booked. I was making plans, booking tours, I wasn’t expecting for the world to stop but it happened. We cancelled everything to be responsible and do our part. Seeing firsthand the fighting in the stores, people stealing supplies from hospitals, hearing accounts from other hotspot areas and the healthcare workers in Italy and China was heart wrenching, and the droves of people coming to the ER has it all feeling like I’m in a movie⁣ ⁣ Social distancing and doing our part to #flattenthecurve is of the utmost importance. This is no longer a issue that we can simply watch from afar, it’s here, it’s among us, it’s in our neighborhoods and we need to exercise awareness but not panic. Keep up with your hygiene practices, stay up to date with reliable information from the CDC and WHO, and please don’t hoard masks as the CDC has stated. It leaves little to nothing for us at the frontlines treating these patients day-to-day. I’m not scared of getting the virus, I’m scared of taking it home and also spreading it to my immunocompromised patients; not having a mask available to me means I’m at a higher risk of being a silent vector of this pandemic⁣ ⁣ We still may not know everything about the virus and it’s still very new but the thing we do know is that being responsible and an active part of the change can help immensely. Canceling plans and staying home may be inconvenient and self isolation can be “annoying” but in times like these a small annoyance is worth it in the long run. It allows the hospitals to “catch up” with the saturation we’re faced with. The amount of people needing emergency services, being admitted, or put into isolation in the last few weeks has been more than we are even prepared to handle and we’re doing our very best to keep everything going as smoothly as possible. To my fellow frontline healthcare workers: stay safe, stay calm, and we can get through this together💕
