For breakfast I had...Whatever I wanted because no one has to come out of lockdown “better” than before. In fact no one has to focus on anything but getting through this. Our mental health, sleep and exercise patterns have a huge effect on our overall health. Sure some foods are more nutritious than others but restricting is a sure fast way to misery. So I won’t be posting pictures of super healthy lockdown meals; just the odd empty plate/bowl. Food is the solution you’re looking for. I only stopped binging on pizza when I gave myself full permission to have as many flavors as I want, as many pieces as I want, as many instances and as many days as I want. No rules, no restrictions, no frustration. I understand that drifting from diet mentality is challenging and disrupting at the beginning. Recovery might be harder than dieting, food freedom looks scary and feels like you just can’t trust yourself around food. A challenge to You. (Yes, you. ) • TODAY! Get a bagel/bread/toast/croissant/some-sort-of-vehicle-for-condiment. Slather it with an EPIC amount of your favourite spread. If you don’t tend to make your own snacks/ meals, ask your food-preparer to be “extremely generous” & do a “nice, thick layer”. (Use those words ). Then: eat it. Then: sit with whatever emotions arise & don’t compensate. • Here are my responses to that excuse you just thought up:. • 🤡 “Ok, I’ll use a rice cake.” No. • 🤡”I don’t *actually* like that much spread”. Cool. I don’t *actually* like spending my money on petrol. But, I do it, bc we all gotta do stuff we don’t like every now & then to get us where we want to be.. • 🤡 “I don’t usually eat bread and spread.” Your ‘usual’ is an eating disorder. Overhauling and slamdunking your ‘usual’ is Recovery. • 🤡“I’m too busy”. Recovery is @ the VERY top of your To-Do list. That busyness is a (fear-based ) avoidant behaviour. You do have a spare couple of minutes. • 🤡 “I don’t have my favourite spread in”. Compromise. Find an alternative. Mash a banana (idk? ). This is an ideal opportunity to prove this to your brain that food doesn’t have to be perfect. If mashed banana is gross, oh well. Now you know. • 🤡 “I don’t want to feel guilty”. And I don’t want you to have an ED forever. Stop making a soft, cosy nest for you ED to relax in. Don’t choose short-term relief by making excuses. Choose possible short-term discomfort for long term-freedom. • 🤡”I’m not hungry”. Eating isn’t only for hunger. You can eat despite lack of physical hunger queues. • 🤡”I’m scared”. That’s fine. But you can do things despite fear. Being scared doesn’t prevent your limbs from moving. • 🤡 “It doesn’t fit into my plan”. Your plan is a minimum. Exceed it. • 🤡 “She won’t know if I sit back & don’t do it” Correct. I won’t. But...you’re only kidding yourself. • 🤡 “I’m having bread for dinner”. There is no limit on how many times you can eat bread per day. There is NO “too much”. • There is nothing (not one thing ) stopping you from doing this today. That excuse that just popped into your mind— yeah that one—is your eating disorder. You have to be stronger than you strongest excuse.

Bola som na gymnáziu, mala som 13 rokov, keď sa moje spolužiačky začali rozprávať o diétach a chudnutí. Dovtedy som nikdy nemala ten pocit, že by som mala schudnúť alebo nejako formovať postavu. Jasné, nebola som spokojná s tým, ako vyzerám, neznášala som svoje brucho, ale tak nejako som akceptovala, že toto som ja. Postupne však ten tlak z okolia narastal, videla som, že baby naozaj chudnú, mení sa im postava a cítila som čoraz viac, že moja postava je zlá. A mala by som s tým niečo robiť. Rozhodla som sa schudnúť a spevniť brucho. Toto rozhodnutie na dlhé roky ovplyvnilo môj život a vlastne aj životné smerovanie. Padla som rovno do náruče anorexie a dlhé roky som sa trápila. Preto sa dnes pýtam. Ako sa cítite práve teraz vo svojom tele? Ak je ten pocit nepríjemný, prosím zastavte sa na chvíľku a spíšte si na papier, prečo je to tak? Je to preto, že sa Vám nepáči ako to telo vyzerá? Alebo je to preto, že toto telo Vám neumožňuje vychutnávať si život naplno, že je tam nejaké obmedzenie? Čo je za tou túžbou zmeniť ho? Verte mi, mnohokrát aj keď to telo zmeníte, schudnete, spevníte, spravíte si prsia, hocičo, ten pocit ostane rovnaký. Pretože TÝM PROBLÉMOM nebolo Vaše telo. English version in comments 👇👇👇

Beige foods ✌🏼 . Delicious fish goujons we had over the weekend with chips, salad and lots of ketchup.🍟 . Beige foods often get a bad press (cheers diet culture ), but actually so many are objectively nutritious (oats, rice, bananas, wholegains ), others feed the soul! As with all things nutrition, it's much more nuanced than good or bad, black or white👍🏼 . Right now, it's also understandable that we might be eating a little more frozen/canned, ready-made foods, and that nutrition maybe a little lower on the priority list.👍🏼 . So I just wanted to remind you to give yourself a break and that it's ok. It's never about one day or period of eating but the diet quality overall.🥫🍠🧁🍪 . Equally, when you add some carbohydrate and anything from a handful of lettuce to some frozen peas or whatever you've got lying around to frozen fish fingers or nuggets, it makes for a very balanced and tasty lunch or dinner.👍🏼 . Having these made me feel pretty nostalgic of school lunches way back when, especially Fridays with fish fingers and curly fries. It was somewhat comforting during these weird times.❤️

Following on from my recent post about hidden ED rules, I want to add that’s it’s super common for people with no history of ED to have super specific or idiosyncratic food preferences: 🥦 Chopping food up, eating with specific cutlery, eating in a certain order, food not touching, mixing all food together, eating very fast, eating very slow, counting certain food groups, eating at a certain time, strange food combinations etc etc. 🥦 However, people without an ED don’t feel a sense of anxiety or distress if they have to go against certain food rules. It’s almost impossible to know if these rules are ED-OCD driven or genuine preferences in recovery. Therefore you have to challenge all of them and eat as freely as possible. 🥦 If you go through all of recovery, but never challenge that specific ritual because you “might genuinely like it that way”, that will be the area where the eating disorder thoughts hold on. 🥦 Full recovery = challenging everything

As a therapist (and fellow human 👋🏼 ), it is not my job to know what is best for someone. It hasn’t been the easiest lesson to learn, because knowing what I do know about weight stigma & diet-culture & body image, I’ve yet to meet a weight loss journey with a side effect of magical body acceptance. Still, I firmly believe in body autonomy - and - in the same way I inform my birthing clients of their delivery options, I follow suit with mental health/eating disorders. Body acceptance and improved body image (and health ) can be achieved without weight loss. It takes a lot of damn hard work, though. And support. Sometimes your struggles and symptoms feel worse when you begin the healing journey. This is normal. You are not broken. Society is. First breakfast in bed - my spontaneous idea. My little one (the other is still sleeping ) was amazed and so happy. Some times ago this would have been unthinkable: too early, my husband not having eaten yet, chocolate (spread ) not before afternoon and many other ed rules. I cannot tell you how frustrated I get when I hear this question. So I'll put it as simple as I can: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS "HEALTHY" OR "UNHEALTHY" FOOD!!! There is food. JUST FOOD. It provides our bodies with the energy it needs to get through the day! It is delicious, and it should be enjoyed, cherished and celebrated 🎉 Attaching a moral value to food only leads to guilt and shame For example: eating chocolate is bad 🍫. I just are chocolate. This makes me bad. 🙅 For example: eating an apple is good 🍏. I just ate an apple. This makes me good. 🙅 Your self worth is not attached to what you eat. And what you eat does not define you. Stop judging what goes into your mouth. Or the mouths of others for that matter!

That glamorous virtual life! BIG THANKS TO THE ESSENTIAL WORKFORCE!!! Deep gratitude that I am able to continue all of my jobs from home. I’ve been quiet around here for a bit. I’ve been feeling all the feels. Going through it, just like you are. Isolation, fear, negotiating safety measures with extended and blended family members, trying to keep my business afloat, gardening, exercising, stuffing my face with all the shit that makes me feel comforted in the moment, but terrible in the aftermath. You name it, I’ve felt it. I’ve been consumed by this pandemic and what it means for us as a collective, as well as what it means to me, personally. My mother is 78, and living with cancer. I’m scared for her every day. My dad is 78 and a first responder. I’m scared for him every day. I am part of a blended family in which three kids rotate between four houses multiple times a week. I fear for us all. But still I rise. The things that make me happy, in no particular order Getting to know my neighbors for the first time in ten years. Starting a band with said neighbors and socially-distanced performing with them each week — check us out @eaglerockisolationband Time with my son. Each night he puts on Stayin’ Alive and we have a disco dance party in his bedroom or the kitchen and it’s giving me LIFE. Being in a band with my son. My ex-husband just asked to join the band, so now I’m gonna be in a band with my ex and my son and so now you REALLY gotta follow our live shows 🤣🤣 Time in my garden. Slowing down. Being in the earth and growing things that we can eat. Cooking dinner each night, which started as a directive from my unofficial eating disorder therapist, @katie_ed_therapist , and which has become a meditative self-care practice. Giving up makeup and almost all beauty regimens — how freeing and money and time-saving! My @onepeloton I’m not consistent but when I need to move, it’s always there, and when I need some coaching myself, I always turn to @iamicaniwillido #100ThatKate What is keeping you afloat during this time? 💜

It’s just hella heavy right now and I wanna validate that for anyone else who is getting hit with it. My clients, colleagues, friends, me, we’re a few weeks into social distancing, mass trauma and crisis, and it’s taking a toll mentally, physically, emotionally... so let’s breeeeeathe. Breathe, rest, sigh, hum, sway, stomp, sing, dance, stretch, hydrate, cry, write, grunt, gargle (seriously ), tighten & release muscles, look at nature, and send a note of thoughtfulness to someone. We press on fam. Feeling, dealing, healing. . I’m in bed at 4:09pm after a long day of virtual therapy, which is really draining for me for some reason - I’ve never had that happen in therapy but these are unprecedented times and mass trauma is real. I’m with you in this. Snuggling Otis and using coping skills. My clients are badass and we can do hard things, all of us. 🛋🆒🖤👩🏼‍💻 . Where are you right now? How you coping?

🥧🥧🥧 I used to only bake with “healthy” ingredients. Now I only bake. Sometimes with the more nutritious ingredients sometimes with the real deal. ⁣⁣ Like this delicious apple crumble. Made with 4 ingredients. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ -Apples (duh )⁣⁣ -White Flour (yep )⁣⁣ -White sugar (THATS RIGHT! )⁣⁣ -Real butter (mhmmm )⁣⁣ (Oh and some cinnamon )⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 🗣No I do not have an abnormally fast metabolism nor do I have “skinny genes.” If I overeat, I too can gain weight. No biggie.⁣ ⁣ ➡️ The difference is I no longer set myself up for overeating later on in the day because I no longer overthink what I eat. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 💭I have learned to listen to myself and trust myself around food again. Trust that it will crave the nutritious stuff and enjoy the yummy stuff. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 🤤Wouldn’t it be nice to eat things you actually enjoy without ANY self doubt, judgement or guilt?? ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 😌And how cool would it be to have that crumble peacefully waiting for you in the kitchen for 2/3 days instead of gulping it down anxiously in one seating? ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It’s pretty cool. Maybe it’s because it’s comforting...maybe because dinner has been earlier than usual and I’m consistently hungry for an evening snack. So many of my clients tell me: “I can’t live like this anymore, I’ve been trying to lose weight half my life. 😩I’m tired of thinking about food all the time, but I’m terrified to gain weight.” The feel afraid to heal their relationship with food. . . Then they ask me: “do you think I’m a terrible person?” 😬They feel bad when they discover they’re having a hard time accepting their bigger body. . . Let’s set the record straight: you are NOT a terrible person if you feel afraid of weight gain. ❤️ I was taught to fear fatness too. So was my mother. So was everyone else on this planet. I saw through my mother’s story the way the world is not welcoming to fat people. That’s why the diet industry is a $72 billion dollar operation: people make money off the wrong idea that being fat is bad. Even right now - in the middle of a global pandemic, diet culture expects us to focus on weight loss, of all things, during this difficult time. And it pisses me off. . . As a Registered Dietitian and a human being, I developed skills to unlearn the idea that fat = bad because these beliefs were harming myself and people I really care about. People like you. People like my mother, in her bigger body. I want to change the system of dieting that makes so many suffer. 💔 . . Do you believe you're addicted to food these days😫? ⁠ ⁠ I used to. It was any easy way to explain my binge eating. ⁠ ⁠ But I was wrong🚫. ⁠ ⁠ Believing I was addicted to food just led me deeper into unhealthy eating habits (restricting, juice detox, cutting out food groups, and then back to inevitable binge eating )⁠ ⁠ I'm not saying the feeling of being addicted to food is not real - as someone who used to struggle with binge eating I know just how real it can feel when you can't stop eating even when you're stuffed and your taste buds have gone numb😓. ⁠ Can you relate? ⁠. . You may especially feel this way right now being surrounded by food 24/7 #quarantine . . But there is a BIG difference between feeling addicted and being addicted.
