What is 'inflammaging?'  🔸This chronic low grade inflammation that accompanies aging and can accelerate aging, can contribute to multiple age related diseases-from arthritis, to heart disease, to cancer and dementia.  🔸Obvious inflammation (gum/periodontal disease ) can impact other parts of our body such as our heart. Conversely nutrition impacts inflammation, gum, and skin health.  🔶 Inflammation that seems isolated (ie eczema, acne, rosacea, gum disease ) can be a red flag that something more is going on in our body.   ⭐️If you're tired of a time consuming multi step regimen that tries to 'control' your acne, eczema or rosacea-STOP, and think what the largest organ is trying to tell you. Evaluating your diet and environment (not just blaming bad genes' ) can help get to the root cause of an inflammatory skin condition start with these steps:  1. Stop all 'skin care' products-really. These can be loaded with known irritants and may be making things worse. Take a break for a few weeks and just wash once a day with water. I know this may be tough to do, it was for me...But you want to help your skin be able to do its job.  2. Use a shower filter that minimizes skin irritating chlorine. I like the Sprite water filter.  3. Evaluate your diet for ‘inflammation instigators.’ Dairy milk and whey are linked with acne and skin inflammation. Gluten grains and corn are too. Or maybe there's another food that you eat often that may be the issue. There are plenty of people, myself included, who drastically improved their skin (and overall health ) through diet. A balanced diet also = better gut health.  4. Use ‘clean’ beauty products that don’t contain essential oils. Parabens, preservatives etc in conventional products often cause irritation but so do too many plant extracts in natural products. Look for shorter ingredient lists. The goal is to help repair and maintain your skin’s barrier. ⭐️ There’s so much more, which I’ll be including in my upcoming anti inflammatory diet and life habits program! Ground Chicken Wonton taco board 🌮 I usually make my own taco shells, but during the week it’s nice to take a few shortcuts! I baked and then fried off the wonton wrappers to make the shell shape I also used my own coleslaw recipe for the purple slaw topping, it turned out great! It's a common misconception that a very low GFR (under 15 ) means that dialysis is your ONLY option. However, there's still SO MUCH that nutrition can do for you. Let's continue our "Greatest Hits" week with a look at what you NEED to know about #ESRD nutrition. 1. It's completely appropriate that a nephrologist begin a conversation about your dialysis options when your GFR drops very low (under 15 ). It's important that you understand the proceedures, time commitment and consequences of both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. 2. An often overlooked part of this discussion for End-Stage Renal Disease is that NUTRITION can still do much to delay the start of dialysis for many kidney disease patients. In Europe, especially, an aggressive nutritional approach is widely recognized as a viable alternative to immediately starting dialysis. 3. The aggressive nutritional approach involves a Very Low Protein Diet. Protein metabolism is hard on the kidneys. VLPD requires supplementation with ketoanalogues and has to be plant-based to achieve the low protein levels required. (Check out our VLPD highlight bubble for more information on this topic ). 4. Ketoanalogues provide the full array of amino acids without he harmful nitrogen that harms the kidneys. They MUST be included in a VLPD to ensure proper nutrition. 5. With a very low GFR, choosing diet over dialysis improves quality of life and gives additional time to find a kidney for transplantation. It's an important part of the discussion that you have with your medical team and dietitian. These points are just the starting point for a discussion on nutrition in ESRD. CHICKEN-SANDWICH 🥪 Chi come me ama questi deliziosi “paninazzi” 🤗🤪? Chi ha detto che mangiare panini a pranzo sia sbagliato? L’importante è sempre scegliere i giusti ingredienti per farcirli. Io ho optato per un pane low carbs della marca @lizza che ho voluto testare per avere un parere su questo tipo di alimenti, l’ho farcito con del petto di pollo e zucchine grigliate. Devo dire che il gusto di questo pane non mi dispiace affatto, e poi è pieno di semi che amo tanto 😋, quindi ogni tanto quando mi va di farmi un buon sandwich proteico e a basso contenuto di carboidrati lo sceglierò sicuramente. Ma è fattibile anche con del semplice pane integrale o ai cereali o di segale, che a dire il vero lo preferisco sempre. Ritornando al sandwich, è anche super comodo da portare a lavoro e ottimo dopo un allenamento in palestra 👌🏻. Cosa ne pensate?
